Ultralight dxing in concrete building

Ola Fredriksson

Hi all !

I live in an apartment house with thick walls of concrete and bricks. I have tried many of my portable receivers but it is impossible to get good signals on mediumwave. Do you know if there is any kind of portable receiver that is better than others during this condition? Thanks in advance

While s super sensitive radio will do best in this situation, by far your best option will be to import a signal from a less-shielded location with an external antenna of some sort. There are several options.

Thanks Jay, maybe install a c crane twin coil ferrite outdoors??

The Twin Coil is designed to work outdoors. However, because it is a ferrite loop assembly, it has directional characteristics which may not allow you to receive or null desired signals depending how the Twin Coil is mounted. A cheaper alternative to start with - how about 50 feet/15 meters or so out the window and using loop coupling to the radio?  Since you mention the Twin Coil, the CCrane Website Blog shows just a solution. The actual wire length out the window is not too critical and the usual cautions about electrical safety apply.

Ola,
I do have a Twin Coil as well and take it along with me when traveling. I set it on the window ledge or balcony with the 25foot cable so i can listen to my radio in a more comfortable position while trying to locate signals not in the adjacent area. With the Twin Coil on the window ledge, i have to shut down the AirCon as it creates a big source of noise for AM in general.

Trying to DX inside a building like that will always be a pain, try to get outside with a portable radio if you can.

True but when the weather outside sucks, i take what i can get.

I live in an apartment house with thick walls of concrete and bricks.
I'm in the same situation, in addition also the flat roof here is of concrete.
So I'm surrounded by ferroconcrete like in a Faraday cage.
The only opening is my window.
What helped me was a Möbius loop antenna with 1m diameter, connected to the antenna input of my radio.
Works from VLF to upper VHF.
