Sticky radios

This link I came across yesterday may be of help to somebody. I have yet to try any of these myself but will be doing so in the near future.

I used baby wipes to treat my G8

And did they work Peter? I've put some De-Solv-It Sticky Stuff Remover into my Amazon basket to buy when I next make a bigger purchase from them, it's £5.59. The reason I was interested in this problem is that I just received yet another eBay special; an Etón G3 which is in a very dirty and sticky condition, but it's working perfectly and may even be slightly better than a similar one I already own.

Obviously  or I wouldn't  have mentioned it. I think I used three of the altogether.  They were 59p for 60 from Home Bargains  ;)

Sorry for asking a silly question Pete.

That sounds like a good idea and solution to the problem.

...and my comment of August 29, 2018 therein:

Once got a mint G3 off eBay which had the stickies.
The popular solution then, was to remove it using isopropyl alcohol.
A laborious task, for sure, but since it had worked beautifully for my E100 I gave it a shot.
Ended up removing all of the silk screen printing from the front panel too.

Thanks for that Michael
Yes I have got a half litre of isopro but I'll wait for the DSI stuff I think, particularly as I already have a perfectly good G3 already. As a matter of interest do you still have/use yours?

I looked at the photos of De-Solv-It Sticky Stuff Remover on Amazon, I couldn't find a list of  ingredients but it does mention aliphatic hydrocarbons, and as it is a liquid, then probably similar to petrol!

Hi Pete
I've just ordered some of the gel based kind, I'll let you know the outcome.

The G3? No, I had since resold it.

I noticed two varieties on Amazon. Can you tell which one you selected.
I have an E1 that is pretty bad. The stickies and dust. I can't even get the dust off because it is bonded to the sticky mess.
Also, I read articles in the past where people completely disassembled the radio to clean it. This seems like a lengthy process where one can screw up the radio.
Anyone successfully clean one without a full takedown?

Hi Phil
I ended up buying it from eBay, and it's the Gel Spray as pictured below

i have used isopropyl alcohol (95%) and a cloth with great success. Much more immediate results as it is readily in my medicine cabinet. There is a slight bit of elbow grease involved as the rubberized coating is not completely removed in a single rub down with the cloth.
The best part is since alcohol is water soluble, i can wash out the cloth and reuse again.

Hi Kevin
I don't believe the object is to remove the rubber coating, just remove the stickiness.

If you've got the $$, good stuff. For the ££ plebs, meths plus elbow-grease works ok-ish...

Wouldn't that also remove the coating Michael?

Fen..

Hmmmm. I only found it on Ebay from the UK. Good price, but ~$25 shipping. I am in the US.
Amazon has several flavors, (~ $13 free shipping) but no gel. I think I will get one of the others and give it a shot.

Hi Phil
I don't think it has to be gel, if you look at the original post again there's no mention of it, just a citrus aroma.
