SSB for a "heavy ultralight"
enriqueeeeee2001
Dear group,
Recently I have been lucky to get a brand new Elta 3569 receiver aka Tecsun/Redsun/Roadstar RP2100.or Ccrane Sw. It is said that is a very good RX on MW and SW, although I have other rigs but this portable has always interested me.
I have discovered that it lacks SSB mode so I have been surfing the web looking for an adapter or similar. The radio has an IF AM output and and SSB converter was offered long time ago, the TG-37 adapter but regrettably is not sold anymore and I have not found the scheme either.

PD. I f anyone has a TG37 for sale or has the scheme, please mail me please.
Any suggestions are very welcomed.
Thanks in advance

Hi there.
Have you thought about using a close coupled BFO to resolve the SSB signal? I have a Grundig Yacht Boy 206 which is a great radio buy doesn't have SSB so i thought i would ry and have a go at making an external, close coupled BFO.
The circuit I'm going to try is here.
https://www.industrial-electronics.com/radio-elec_9.html
I have got most of the bits together and am going to try making it on strip board.
I wil let you know if it works
Best wishes,
ian (M3FQW)

I have one of those devices... around here somewhere. It works pretty well on strong signals, but IIRC it was a bit fiddly.
If you can locate one, it is worth trying it out. I have to think about whether I want to sell it. I still have the radio and use in occasionally.
I bookmarked this thread and will let you know if I decide to sell it.
I could probably take some pictures of it if you think you might figure out the schematics by looking at it.

Some other devices have been made as SSB BFO adapter, and maybe, they are even better quality! One on ebay:

Placed close to the rx, it will
work, but not optimally.
Frequency stability of the BFO and the rx detector are not ideal.
BFO frequency should ideally be crystal-controlled.
The detector should be a balanced product detector.
Worth a try, but if the RX is good on AM, maybe a conversion job?

Thank you very much for your advices.
Yes, I had seen that brazilian BFO 455 khz , in Italy sell it as well. I have asked before buying and the seller says that is not a product detector only an oscillator and it will not work wit that IF am output, only by proximity:
https://www.ebay.es/itm/333941213623
He wrote me:
The function of this oscillator is create a slightly offset at 455 KHz signal to beat with a signal present in the internal stages of the receiver, thus transforming an SSB transmission into an AM.
Basically it is like when you are receiving an SSB signal in AM mode and someone transmits a carrier on the same channel: result is the SSB becomes intelligible.
To obtain this effect, you simply have to bring the wire that transmits the 455 KHz from oscillator closer to the antenna of the receiver and finely tune both controls (BFO tune and Radio tuning).
