Recording from portable receiver

Ola Fredriksson

Hi all, I’m curious what kind of recording devices you are using when you recording from portable receiver. It is a”jungle” of different devices. Looking for an easy operate  but good recorder. Thanks in advance. Have a great weekend

My V115 had a built in recorder but I was not a fan of that radio.

I personally take videos of anything "special" but mostly I don't record my loggings. I do keep written notes of these which I save in MWDxerDB.

Hi,

Personnally I use a Metronic 477210. It is a small FM receiver with a built-in recording device and it also has a line-in jack. It produces 32kHz/128kbps stereo MP3 files, so quality is excellent.

When I'm away for home it serves me as an FM receiver. At home I use it to record stuff from my SW receivers.

Intrestingly, when you record via the line-in device you car listen to the audio on the loudspeaker at the same time. So if your receiver doesn't have a line-out jack you can use the headphone jack and listen to the programme simultaneously via the Metronic.

I have also tried to connect two SW receivers simultaneouly, one on the left channel and the other on the right channel. It worked perfectly. The two channels are perfectly independent, it's real stereo not "joint-stereo" as is often the case with modern devices.

One more thing: the files are labelled MP3, but it seems they are actually MP2 files.

73,

Martin.

I think any of the Olympus LS series would produce brilliant results, even the very small LS-P1 gives superb results. I have a few different models in addition to more professional gear, but it’s just not necessary.

I should have added that personally I use my iPhone with a good recording app, and it’s simple then to transfer straight to Dropbox or whatever you want to do with it. The question is, what do you want to do with it?

What is the quality like for that?

Might be a bit late to jump in here, but I use a Sony ICD-UX570. Excellent results with it's internal mics or through line in. It's speaker is barely useful of course since the whole thing is only about four inches long, one and a quarter wide and less than half an inch thick. But all of these small ones are in the same boat there. With headphones or an amplified speaker it is great. Plugs into USB to recharge the battery. Still goes for under $100 Canadian on Amazon.ca. There are less expensive versions that would do just as well too.

   Regards,
   Gord

Hi Paul
I personally find the quality more than adequate. I record in WAV format via an called Voice Record Pro on my iPhone 8. Here is an example I recorded without any attempt at making a good recording:

Hi Ola
You don’t actually say whether or not the report will be verbal or written? If verbal then joining both files together at a later date is fairly simple, or what I have come to do is add quick notes either directly on top of the recording, or kill the volume on the receiver and add them on at the end. This method obviously avoids any later editing. The options for using a line out socket, if you have one, will vary with equipment. My quick notes will essentially include frequency, time and receiver. Additionally if you only record a short example you could add such stuff as ‘Enrico, north Italy, talking to Ron etc’, you get the idea.

Gord, I’m not sure what you mean by a ‘bit of a jump here’?

Hi Ola.
Have you thought about a small laptop and using some recording software on that?
