Group Posting Suggestions

Gary DeBock

Although everyone is welcome and encouraged to post any comments related to the overall topic of portable radio DXing on our group list, please ensure that your material is of relevance to several of our very large group (of over 1,000 DXers) prior to posting. We have many subgroups in that total, but unless posts are likely to be useful to multiple members, please consider using private emails. A group forum is rarely the best venue for extended conversation between two individuals, unless all such communication involves topics of interest to multiple members.  General topics of long range propagation, portable radio comments, antenna assessments and the like are always welcome, but please remember that we are a worldwide group, and your comments are being read worldwide. When all members strive to post comments of general interest, the value of our group list to the overall membership will be enhanced. Thanks for your cooperation.

Dear Gary,
As the majority of recent posts to the group  are mine and are unwanted I'll leave the group.
Goodbye

Peter,

There was never any implication that your posts were unwanted. Your level of DXing skill and propagation knowledge are outstanding, and your contributions are always welcome. The message was simply to encourage members to post material with group relevance, and to keep in mind that we have over 1,000 members worldwide. If you choose to leave the group over this, it will be very unfortunate for all that this general guideline was the reason.

Hi Gary
i feel that I may be partly responsible for your post, I do tend to ramble on a bit. There may have been some 'unnecessary' chatter between my self and others, so I hold my hands up and plead guilty. I am basically a beginner who has been trying to glean some knowledge and encouragement within the forum, and particularly with Peter because he like myself is in the UK and it's good to to have help. If you are trying to discourage banter between members I feel that's very sad and I'm disappointed.

Drifter,

We were all beginners at one point, and we were all in desperate need of advice and assistance. The only way to make progress is to ask questions, especially with experts like Peter who can provide helpful guidance.

The general guideline was to encourage everyone to remember that group postings go out to 1,000+ members, and consider that extended conversations between two individuals might better be handled by private email.

Despite this there certainly was never any intention to discourage anyone to post to our group, much less to consider anyone's postings as unwanted. The group forum works best with maximum group participation, as long as such participation has value to multiple members of the group.

Gary

Gary,
You have inspired many uldx experimenters; and we are all grateful for your initiatives.
Not all posts are relevant to all of us, but we like to read them and know what others are doing.
(Confession: I have a secret button which allows me to delete posts beyond my ken...)

So, might I suggest a lighter touch?

I am a member, not a moderator. As I see it, the intent was more aimed at lengthy back-and-forth discussions between two or three individual members, merely suggesting that when a group discussion reaches that point, it should be taken privately rather than on the list. This is a common situation which shows up from time to time on nearly all email lists I've been a member of.

There's no need for anyone to leave the group because of this.

Michael and Russ,

Thanks for your comments.

As Russ mentioned, this type of guideline is a common topic in any large group with hundreds of members worldwide. The posting suggestion was simply to encourage group-oriented posts, and suggest the option of private email for extended communication between two or three individuals. This same topic came up on our Ultralight group list about three years ago. Both then and now, there has never been any suggestion (or even a hint) that members should leave the group over this general guideline. In fact. all recent communication has been from valued members of the group, who we hope will continue to participate.

As a "previous offender", I will keep this in mind.

I read all posts and while I don't reply as often as I did in the past, I do find them all very interesting and useful.

I've learned from long experience, going back to Usenet newsgroups, to avoid getting wrapped up in meta-threads. Even so, I wanted to mention something recent.

This group has clued me into some good radios and, most recently, a much improved version of a radio I already had. The Tivdio V-115, which later became the Retekess V115 (no hyphen!) the recording capabilities of this unit interested me. But the reception quality was so-so, the recording function had a maximum bitrate of 128 kbps MP3, and audio from the headphone jack was tinny and scratchy.

A recent post here just happened to include a couple of audio clips recorded on a recently acquired Retekess V115 at 320 kbps MP3. It's not as if I needed another radio, but these units cost less than US$25, so I ordered one. It arrived today. Indeed, its maximum audio quality setting is now 320. Moderate quality is 160 and lowest quality is 128. In other words, the highest-quality bitrate on the older models is now considered the lowest quality on the new models. This upgrade in capabilities will be very handy for me. While 128 kbps MP3 is adequate for recording radio, I still like to get the highest quality I can. This upgrade is not reflected in the new radio's owner's manual, so it may be very new!

That's not all, though. The headphone audio problem has been fixed! Output through the headphone jack now sounds the way it should.

The menu text in the display also now uses a different, more readable font. Controls also seem more responsive than on the older models.

All this was found with about 1/2 hour with radio once it arrived today.

What's my point? I think it's that, if you read this group fairly regularly and know what to look for, you'll find there's a wealth of information here. It's why I stick around.

For what it's worth....cheers!

Same here. I rarely post. I didn't see a problem, but there is always "that guy" whining or complaining. I'm getting out of here, too.

I don't think the idea was to have people leave, if somebody has an issue with a post, they can just ignore it.

The signal to noise ratio lately here was very low signal, high noise and I was hitting the delete button ALOT.

Morning/Evening,
It is not always easy to moderate an e-group and as an other groups moderator I know what I am saying. An e-group is like a public area where everybody meets: beginners, casual radiolisteners, experienced DX'ers or professionals browsing the 'radio landscape'.

A public area, to be practical and habitable, needs rules, but most important, needs responsability of the people being there. All of us are most of the times responsible but sometimes not really because our excitement, joy or sadness. That's human, that's the life.

But being responsible implies to recognize wise or wrong decisions and manage them. As a moderator I ask people just two things: never be rude or use bad language, and always posting thinking in the general interest, not on their own. That's true! members can delete messages, but nobody join an e-group just to delete messages, but to share with others and learn, as Gary pointed

Our hobby is nothing without beginners or experienced people. From that interaction the knowledge is born and communication implies walking together. The responsability of experienced DXers is also, in a way, to show how the marvellous world of DXing is.

But without responsability, a public area or an e-board could be just an empty place...

73 y saludos desde España.
