Another eBay fun toy

Hi all
A new toy has arrived. The very small Sanyo RP42, it may be small in size but in terms of volume it's huge! It also appears to be remarkably sensitive but I need more time to play. There's an issue I want to overcome first, the tuning drive cord is slipping on the tuning wheel. I'm hoping that a thorough clean of the wheel and cord with iso-alc will do the job? I'll keep my eyes open for another one of these, but they appear to be an uncommon model? From what I've seen Sanyo produced several different model of these small receivers? Does anyone else have any comments positive or negative about Sanyo?

I found that this thing picks up Smooth Radio Kent a 400 watt transmitter 173 miles away from me at about the same level as my R-108, I'm getting to love this thing! I only hope I don't damage it while trying to get the cord to grip on the tuning wheel 🤔.

Good luck with that Drifter. I suspect the string has stretched and will probably snap. Yes, that has happened to me

Thanks for that Peter, that's really cheered me up 😊.

I have that radio. Actually I have both of them! I used that little Sanyo a lot back in the late 1990s, mostly just for local FM. It was a nice little shirt pocket radio. I still have it but at some point the positive battery connector broke off. I don't know if that was just an issue with my radio or if it was a more general problem. But it's probably something to check for.

That is a nice and small radio, I hope the performance for you is good.

Hi Dennis
Wow, so I'm not the only owner! Do you recall being impressed as I was with the volume this midget can produce, particularly bass wise? I'm hoping I can make time tomorrow to try and sort out the slipping cord problem, but I'm not particularly encouraged by Peter's remarks 🙂. Re the battery connectors, yes they do appear to be pretty weak, but what I noticed on mine was the plating coming off, and I was slightly concerned about the possibility of shorts. However I believe that's the least of my worries! I think what this little beastie proves is that size certainly isn't everything 🤭. Thanks for your input

Yes I agree about the sound. I mostly used that radio to listen to the local classical music station and it performed very well.

If it still slips after cleaning and it is indeed a traditional string rather than some other kind of mechanical system, try rosin...sometimes it does the trick.

That's an excellent idea, thanks Jay!
