I would save up for a Tecsun PL-330. A great value for the money. It’s not perfect but an excellent small FM/LW/MW/SW SSB DSP receiver with 850 memories (more importantly it stores scanned frequencies for each hour-a unique feature).

I had the V115, not a good radio so I would avoid it, based on that. Check out the Tecsun models, they are well regarded.

Okay Issac, we now know what you’re after. As a beginner myself I feel I can save you a bit of time and money. There are some very good cheap analogue radios about; avoid them! You need to have a digital readout, not only for convenience but later on for accurate logging of stations. If you know the precise frequency of the station you’ve found you can, by various means of deduction find out later what you have heard. The next definite is that the radio should have shortwave. It’s from this point on it becomes more arbitrary. There are certain things that are nice to have but are by no means necessary. Bear in mind that you will almost certainly not use this radio for long, but during the initial learning process you will automatically become more sure of what you want or need. Membership of this group will help you enormously, it’s a very knowledgeable and friendly bunch of people. Have a further look at the possibilities on Amazon (having already eliminated your first two choices) and come back to us with what you’ve found, before you buy. Drifter

I own the County Comm version of the Tecsun 368 and its a great little radio. It has the same features as the Tecsun 330. If you get one check the net for its hidden features such as changing internal to external antenna, etc.

I’ve been looking at the Tecsun version of that little beastie, as well as checking reviews etc. It appears that the most important thing in buying one is to check it has the English manual, and not the Chinese. The one with the English manual is the latest export version apparently. But I’ve seen on YouTube how well it compares with the Tecsun PL-330. Drifter

I havent been following this discussion too closely.. but over the years I've tried a bunch of radios.. and if youre after AM DX then the CCrane skywave is the best. It's pretty hot with no external antenna. Couple a loop to it and its amazing (Google "Alaska radio nerd" !) It also has SW too which is good The audio is good. The only portable I buy now is the CCRane Skywave non SSB model

I would echo Paul's comments that the CC Skywave is a good little unit. It's compact size makes it a good travel receiver. When I am in Newfoundland, I use it as a bedside receiver with any any antenna - no longwire, no inductively coupled loop, no monstrous FSL) and I can listen to the UK, Spain, Romania and others from inside the house in spite of the shielding that the house provides.
