"One Radio to rule them all" or "Mix it up a bit" ???

Hi all,

Two (fun I hope) questions:

1)  When it comes to your preferred DX'ing rig/equipment, do you have an "absolute go-to" radio that you prefer, or do you like to mix up your "radio usage" to some degree?

2)  What is the current radio that you are using?


I'll go first:

1)  I definitely mix it up A LOT, but there are some favorites that "make it into the rotation" more often than others

2)  Currently I am loving my (new) Eton Mini

1) My main radio is my Digitech AR-1733. I also use my other radios a bit, my TEAC PR130 is a good bedtime radio as the display back light is not too bright. At times I use one of my analogue tuning radios if I want a bit of a challenge.

2) It is my Digitech AR-1733 most of the time.

Mix it up. I move from traditional to SDR back to traditional.

Hi,

I guess one's "absolute go-to" is always one's latest acquisition.

In my case it is the Tecsun PL-330, but I also use my XHDATA D-808, which was my previous "absolute go-to".

Well if it’s the latest acquisition then at this point in time it’s the Tecsun PL-330, but in the near future that will change as I had a bit of a newbies eBay trawl over the holidays! I’ve got coming an old Steepletone MBR7, an NT-999 (?) and a totally useless (stupidly bought without reading) Sony 7600d. Considering I only got into this game by accident a couple of weeks back, I think I need to slow down!

My go to radio is the XHDATA D-808. I did try the Tecsun 330, but found the MW performance to be poor so sold it on.

I do have a newly acquired SDRplay RSPdx which I'm planning on using for overnight (I'm in the UK) transatlantic MW DXing because it offers the flexibility of doing scheduled recordings.

However good an SDR is, for me nothing beats the feeling you get when using a proper radio.

Hi Peter,

I couldn't agree more, the feeling of a "proper radio" is hard to beat!

I'm finally to the point in my life were I could actually buy those "expensive radios" that I dreamt of as a teen, but intead I find myself playing with radios that average $50 or less, LOL!
