918-Australian UnID in the Cook Islands-- 2XL in Cooma?
During a wild trip to Aitutaki in the Cook Islands in April of 2018 this very wild recording on 918 kHz was made at 1658 UTC on April 12th, with a 7.5" loopstick CC Skywave and 5" FSL antenna. It starts off with the Cambodian National Anthem from 918-RNK, the infamous "Cuckoo Clock" time pips at 1:41 (a mix of the time pips from Shandong in China, and RNZ from New Plymouth and Timaru) and an Australian UnID at near S9 level from 4:05 to 4:45. There is a musical into starting at 4:05 and finally a "Midnight, with Merv Starr" program identification at 4:36 into the recording. Does anybody know if this program was on 918-2XL overnight (or on 4VL, for that matter)? Any assistance from Oz would be appreciated-- thanks! https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/qams92h5ktn7ki93u3qlvbzvyl3y8rru Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA) |

Hi Gary.
I have listened to this file multiple times, as much as I try I am not able to give you a solid ID. 2XL has now moved to FM and this frequency has not been one that I have devoted much DXing time to. Paul -- Paul - Moderator UltralightDX |

<<< I have listened to this file multiple times, as much as I try I am not able to give you a solid ID. 2XL has now moved to FM and this frequency has not been one that I have devoted much DXing time to. >>> Thanks for listening to the MP3, Paul, and it's no big deal that this 918 kHz Oz station remains unidentified. Australia from the Cook Islands isn't exactly exotic DX :-) I just thought that with 918-2XL having gone silent on AM, I had better ask for opinions before the station's programs fade from the memory of the local AM-DXers. 73, Gary |

Hi Gary,
2XL runs automated music overnight with no talkback, hence you most likely had 4VL. Regards, Will. |

Listeners in Oz around Sydney will probably have a much easier time tracking down 918-RNK in Cambodia now, as Todd has mentioned. The station is a real "big gun" in Hawaii every sunrise, with a very distinctive sign off (with National Anthem) at 1702 UTC daily. This was its signal last November 3rd, it the back yard of Oz DXpedition partner Chris Rogers' condo in Poipu, Hawaii https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/3s5i2y1xmqs8dqpk3wt8tdqjn6as7d6j 73, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA) |
