Radio shootout review

Hi Gary,

That is a great review you did and I can tell I've missed a lot in 4 to 5 years.  The encoder shaft on my CCrane SWP broke about that long ago and it sat gathering dust all this time on the workbench shelf.  I happened to find a broken SWP at a yard sale over the weekend for $1 and it gave up its shaft this week to fix mine.  That little SWP is still a powerhouse and the best of my several ultralights on MW.  FM, well, not so much.  My Tecsuns and Grundig G8 still outclass it on FM but that's to be expected with the Si chip in them.   I wasn't surprised to see that the CCrane Skywave performed as well as it did.   CCrane can at times makes some "interesting" claims about their gear but I've found the SWP and my CCRadio 2 to be the best of my bunch on MW.   I'm going to have to ask Santa to leave a Skywave under the tree for me.

Good DXing,

Rick

Hi Hans,

The Tecsun PL-310 was one of 5 Ultralight radios thoroughly reviewed in the 2015 Ultralight Radio Shootout article, posted at http://swling.com/blog/2015/03/gary-debocks-2015-ultralight-radio-shootout-review/

You can read how the model compares with other pocket radios in MW, FM and SW performance.

Hi Rick,

It's great to hear from you again.

The C.Crane SWP was very popular around 2008 because of its competitive MW sensitivity and selectivity, and for a short period (before Tecsun introduced the DSP Ultralights like the PL-310) it became the preferred pocket radio for transoceanic DXing.

The CC Skywave has proven to be very rugged in wild ocean cliff DXpeditions, surviving heavy rain, gale force winds and freezing cold. The build quality is exceptional, and it has become the new preferred model (when assisted by a transplanted antenna) for those of us who push our luck tracking down transoceanic DX. The price is steep, but you do get what you pay for.
