I am fairly new to ULR dxing and have a grundig g8. Would like to get another radio that will give better mw performance. I would like to keep the price around 50 dollars and any suggestions will be appreciated.

Welcome to our ULR enthusiast group!

Your Grundig G8 (a.k.a. Tecsun PL-300WT) was the first of the Tecsun pocket radios to feature DSP filtering from the Silicon Labs Si4734 DSP chip, but it does have its weak points. The loopstick is not particularly sensitive on the AM band, and the DSP filtering is fixed at the 3 kHz setting. Depending upon your DXing goals, you can easily purchase a better radio for around $50, Thylton.

If you are interested mainly in domestic (North American) DXing, radios like the Tecsun PL-310 or PL-606 would be good choices. Both of those models are more sensitive on the AM band than the Grundig G8, and both of them have the full range of DSP filtering options from the Si4734 DSP chip (down to the narrowest, 1 kHz setting).  If your primary interest is transoceanic (split-frequency) DXing with external antennas, my recommendation would be the Tecsun PL-380 model.  If you are interested, a full article describing the DXing tradeoffs with these three newer Tecsun DSP portables is posted at http://www.mediafire.com/view/gcu6zgyxb724cy2/Tecsun606.doc

Gary, Thanks for the quick reply Being new to this I don't understand what all the specifications mean; what makes the pl 380 better for transatlantic dxing and the other two for domestic. The specifications look very similar: I'm confused. Also is tecsun your perferred band are do you have suggestions for other manufactures.
