Desktop antenna !!!!

Hi,
Searching for ideas on a desktop MW loop antenna I came upon
this loop by Mizuho.

Herculodge: Mizuho UZ-77 Active Loop Antenna

herculodge.typepad.com/.../01/mizuho-uz-77-active-loop-antenna.html

Has anyone any experience of using such a loop ???? it may possibly
be an old model.
                                         Thanks,
                                                 72, Brian, GØNSL.

I have the old Select-a-tenna,  and the TERK. There are also similar 9 inch or so tuned AM antennas from China sold under a few different names. The TERK and SAT are quite similar, and probably all would be about the same, greatly helping modest radios, and offering very little advantage on the best portables. Being directional, you may 'point' it to a more distant station on the same freq. and hear it well instead of the stronger/more local one. The largest diameter passive tuned loop you are comfortable inside should have the strongest output. You need to be able to point it in different directions. For me, I like to hang loops on a swivel from the ceiling, and 2-3 foot loops are fine in my radio room. I hang a piece of non-conductive matterial, like a dowel or plastic pipe off the bottom so I can rotate the loop with out gettting my hand too near it. - FARMERIK

Stan,
Thank you for the comments on the Terk loop antenna.
A nice looking piece of kit and at $41 appeared a reasonable cost.
However checking the item through Amazon I found that the same ethos applies
as we have laboured under in the UK for years with radio equipment
i.e. $1 = £1 regardless of exchange rates so the $41 becomes £41 hi!
                                                    Regards,

Hi Brian,

I think you will be very happy with the Terk Advantage antenna whatever the price! Tonight I snagged a new one: KBGG on 1700 kHz in Iowa, 1100 miles away using the Terk.

Thats a very nice catch Stan. Theres also KCJJ thats on 1630, the latter is semi-regular here now that the fall season is here. After 10PM EST is a good time for them.

Stan,

I've been reading your comments on the Terk Loop. I have the Radio Shack AM Loop (Model 15-583, if I recall). I don't know how long I've had it, but I've used it with several portable radios with pretty good results.

Does the Terk AM Loop have an output jack on it for connecting it to a radio?

The RS Loop has a 1/8" jack on the rear of its base so that it can be connected by means of a mono patch cord (insulated ones work best) to any radio with an antenna input jack.

This is mainly how I use the RS Loop. I can place the Loop on a platter/lazy susan so it can be rotated for nulls, leaving the radio stationary, which makes it easier to tune.

Have you ever used the RS AM Loop before? I was wondering how the Terk compared to it.

One feature I like about the Terk Loop is that the tuning apparatus forms a "makeshift" ledge at the bottom of the loop against which small portable radios can rest. The RS Loop is smooth all around the inside of the loop, meaning that the radios will slide off with the slightest rotation of the loop.

Thanks for your review of the Terk Loop and for your columns in QST!

Hi all,

Seems to work quite well and is fairly well built, for the price it is very hard to go past.

I have both loops. They are roughly equivalent in performance in my
testing.

The Terk has dial markings that help some in finer tuning. It also has
an output jack for connecting to a radio, though most of my portables
don't respond to antenna input on the AM band.

Another interesting thing I just noticed while testing them is that
it's sometimes possible to suppress adjacent channel IBOC splash. AM
800 Windsor was awash in 810 WGY HD, and I was able to completely dial
out the hiss.

It seems that the UZ-77 is available, but shipping outside of Japan is not. Taking a wild guess, I would say that you could expect at least the same performance from a Quantum loop from Radio+. Gerry is still making the Quantum's as far as i understand it.

The jack can be used to connect to the radio and can also be used to passively couple a wire antenna to the radio. The manual for the Terk does mention it.
