DX tip

KXOR-660 Junction City, Oregon appears to be running 10 KW day power at night instead of licensed 75 watts, both ND. It has been doing this for several weeks. Dominating usual KWVE and KTNN in Central California and audible underneath them in Southern California. Format is Spanish religion. IDs as Radio Zion. Audio stream: 73 and great DXing in 2013 |

Out of curiosity I looked up these stations and saw that KTNN 660 is the Voice of the Navajo Nation. I took a listen to 660 on my drive home from work last night, not knowing which of the stations on 660 I'd hear, or how well. There was some hash from KIRN 670 Radio Iran in Los Angeles, but KTNN was very copyable in the Los Angeles/Southern California area, even on a just the car radio. I heard a mix of country (in English) and traditional Navajo music and Navajo commentary along with 2 station KTNN ID's. I think I faintly heard something underneath too, but couldn't tell if it was KWVE (this would be my first guess) or KXOR.

It was interesting that I was listening to a Navajo language radio station just a couple of hours after I finished reading "Code Talker," by Chester Nez. Nez is the last surviving member of the original 29 Navajo Indians recruited by the Marine Corps at the beginning of WWII and secretly tasked with creating a radio code based entirely on the Navajo language, a code that remained unbreakable. --- In ultralightdx@..., Dennis Gibson <wb6tnb@...> wrote:

On the east coast 660 is pretty much dominated by the 50KW WFAN (formerly WNBC) out of New York City, at least into the Carolinas. Sometimes during the day I pick it up, about 360 miles away (Richmond, VA). Of course, there are many locals on that frequency, like 550 watt WLOY in southwest Virginia. Daytime only. Can't get it from here.
