Just thought I'd better post an intro.

FINALLY signed up to ULR. I hate systems where you have to share personal information with large corporations just to communicate with like-minded individuals. Grrrr. Especially ones with so called "security questions" that you have to answer in order to join up and make you register with their free email system and all their other stuff.

But anyway...

Andy Gardner here - longtime NZRDXL member, MW and FMTVDX enthusiast and ZL2APG.

I have a couple of Tecsun PL-380's I picked up in HK a few years back (visited their HK office), and have started experimenting with FSL's - have a 300mm diameter one that I am playing with different winding materials/configurations trying to optimise Q. Using an HP 141T spectrum analyser/tracking generator set up to help with that.

Back in the old days, my best ever DX antenna (aside from the 1500m beverage we used to use) was the "Q Multiplier with Spiral Loop" described in Practical Wireless March 1981. With the q multiplier attached the tuning was so sharp, you could pick which side band you wanted to listen to.

Once I have optimised Q on the FSL, I am intending to fit a q multiplier to it, and am leaning toward incorporating varicap tuning as in Chris Trask's* 2008 design.

Once that is done, I am hoping to proceed toward having the antenna controlled by an arduino with remote wireless access, as you can then have the antenna automatically track your receiver tuning and then add fancy stuff like a phasing array that will null known local signals automatically - which leans to instantaneous entire spectrum automatic monitoring with notification of unusual carrier signals detected. But that's a fair way down the track. Let's just get the FSL working well first!

* I am assuming this is a different Chris Trask than the one who was a Radio Tech for Radio New Zealand in the 80's. :)

Hello Andy,

Welcome to our Ultralightdx group-- and it's great to have another New Zealand DXer join our community! This is Gary (N7EKX)-- FSL antenna fanatic, and dedicated chaser of Kiwi AM stations every year during our local summer (June-September).

Your innovative FSL antenna ideas should be warmly welcomed in our group, Andy! The Ultralightdx group has been leading the radio community in FSL antenna experimentation and innovation, and you should find quite a lot of detailed information in our files. If you need any FSL construction parts, please let me know. When you get your FSL antenna up and running, I hope that you can track down a nice ocean side cliff facing the NE direction.. and have some North American AM signals test the "crunch resistance" of your PL-380's, like the Kiwi AM stations (like 567-RNZ, 603-R. Waatea and 765-R. Kahungunu) did for me this past summer. Have fun!

Hello Andy:

Welcome to the Ultralight Radio Group!! Glad to have you aboard, it always nice to have more International Members....I believe we already have 1-2 members from New Zealand and even a Trans-Planted KIWI in "Tony Ward" of Whitby, Ontario!!

Whether you are into DXing, Building Antennas to use with ULRs, Modifying ULRs or just plain old Listening to the Radio...we think you will find lots of interesting stuff here in the Group!! There's a lot of knowledge here in the group....and you joining the Group has added to that compendium!!

Hope you have FUN with ULR Radios, and we all look forward to reading about your ULR Adventures!!

I must say I've been DXing vicariously through your cliff-top stories for a while, as well as looking at your FSL experiments and that's what's actually kick-started me into getting back into it.

I'll be posting some stuff shortly and look forward to your comments.

Yeah, Tony, but those exploits are Racal RA17L and 1500 metre beverage related which are the opposite end of the scale to ULR's and FSL's! I'd get kicked out of the group with the first week.

I do have lots of happy (but fading) memories of driving around the North Island in my racing mini with the Racal strapped into the passenger racing harness and the 1.5m spiral loop folded up in the back seat.

In Riversale, living just 100 metres from the beach, to get away from the local QRM, I had a buried coax run going through the neighbour's back yards to 3 remote antennas in the local reserve with relays and diodes, so I could pick which antenna by sending a dc voltage up the coax. 0v, +ve or -ve.

I've got 2 AM broadcast antennas within 800m of the house here, the usual high QRM plus a demanding 6yo boy and 7yo girl tying me down to the house, so the long term plan will be to remote the antenna and radio, with access via wireless link. That's probably the only way I'll get back into regular DX.

Cheers mate,

Whoops! I've been outed!! Welcome aboard Andy. My NZ days date back to Whangaparaoa and the Lloyd Clayden antenna farm, with big boat anchors and small War surplus lash-ups to receive with Barry Williams and the Auckland crew. Good days. These days I lurk here, travel with the ULR's, watch Gary and Rob's exploits with great interest, but most of my DXing is with an array of Wellbrook antennas, old school long wires and BOG's in my friendly suburban ravine just East of Toronto. The Perseus has displaced all the high end conventional receivers, so I tend to keep my head down around here....but I still love playing with the stuff!

I think what I like most about the ULR group is the documenting by so many members of just what is possible, and your logs show this of course Gary. The contributions of Allen Willie from Newfoundland are another inspiring record that leaves me wondering why I no longer live by the ocean, on whichever coast. Location, antennas, and stubbornness are the main ingredients in success. And it is a good time of year to express thanks to those who show these talents and guide this Group, giving it its rare --- perhaps unique --- flavour. Gary, Rob, and the spirit of the late John Bryant; keeping it real into whatever new calendar we travel on with .....
