Not sure about the two sites but I have a query, from another seller. TECSUN Portable Multi Band AM FM Radio PL390 "This is an excellent portable satellite radio of all-around use.Stylish design of this Handheld Radio takes up a minimum of space on the nightstand, desk or dresser. This Handheld Radio will fit easily into your shirt or jacket pocket! With high technology, this AM FM radio has a higher sensitivity and stability. It doesn't have a "satellite band" does it? Do they mean "Digital" By the way it is not the only radio listed as "Satellite" there is more than 20 from several brands. TECSUN Tecsun R-9702 Portable Handheld Satellite World Radio "Take a listen to our latest innovation Portable Handheld Satellite World Radio! Get your morning motor running with this portable radio! This portable Satellite Radio will fit easily into your shirt or jacket pocket for convenience and easy portability! Stylish design of this Satellite Radio takes up a minimum of space on the nightstand, desk or dresser." SATELLITE receiver??? I know there used to be a satellite direct broadcast but I thought it had closed down. Cheers Will ----- Original Message ----- |

Will, It's a poor translation from Chinese. If it's the site I'm thinking of, they say "satellite" when they mean world band or shortwave. Here in the U.S., there is a commercial satellite broadcaster called Sirius/XM, but that's the only kind of satellite radio I'm familiar with. Regards, Keith B. From: Will To: ultralightdx@... eBay via ANON is a very good choice. Reading the description there is a better translation. The PL-390 is neither a sattelite band receiver nor shirt-pocket sized.... its not an Ultralight.

Right, Paul, not an ultralight but I have read many good reports about them. I went to the doctor last week and there was a 20-something guy in the waiting room listening to one with earbuds; it's about the same height and depth as a PL-310 but 1/3 wider to accommodate the second speaker. (Imagine that, a young man actually listening to a RADIO, not an Ipod or smart phone!). Keith From: ferrite61 To: ultralightdx@... I have been listening to radio since my mid teens. I am now 30. You are right most teens don't listen to radio anymore....

Returns to Amazon are much less expensive. Over a year ago I took a chance and purchased a receiver from a well known eBay seller. Seller is in Hong Kong. Received defective radio. Shipping from Hong Kong to the US apparently is cheap. Postage costs to return it were almost as much as the receiver itself. Also there was a language barrier.
Purchase from eBay outside your continent = IMO a gamble. Why take the chance? 73, Kraig |

I have purchased from both Amazon and eBay. Kraig is right--should you receive a defective radio from Hong Kong, they will certainly replace the unit, but return shipping is both costly and takes time.
To be honest, I buy a lot of radios--if available from a domestic radio retailer like Universal Radio, Grove, Durham (CA) or C.Crane, I buy from them each time. Sometimes they cost a little more, and sometimes they're even cheaper than from the online spots. Universal's selection is quite good as they even have most of the Tecsun line and keep adding more. Returns are very easy and they can even help you troubleshoot. I have used Amazon in the past, but now almost exclusively buy from the real radio guys. When you buy from a radio retailer, you're supporting the hobby itself as they, in turn, support many radio clubs, events and publications. If radio were to die tomorrow as a hobby, Amazon wouldn't even notice or care. Anyway, this is the reason I elect to purchase from actual radio retailers. Cheers, Thomas |

Great point Kraig, when the deciding factor for buying is the price, foreign purchases on items over $10 are definitely risky. Jim
