Is Shortwave Listening Possible with Gary's 7.5 Inch Loopstick Mod to Pl 380?
jerry_popiel
As a fan of Shortwave listening as well as Medium Wave, I am wondering if we can still Listen to Shortwave Radio, - ie the Tropical Bands, for stations such as WWCR (World Wide Christian Radio, and Country Radio) on 3215 and 4840 Khz, after replacing the Tecsun PL-380's standard Loopstick with the outside mounted 7.5 inch Ferrite Loop re Gary Debock's recent June 11, 2011 writeup. Or does the new 7.5 inch Loopstick limit the receiving range on the PL 380 to only Medium Wave? Thanks

The internal loopstick with or without external ferrite antenna only receives LW and MW signals.

Shortwave and FM use the telescopic aerial - so are not affected by the modification. Loosely wrap insulated wire round the telescopic aerial for SW capacitive coupling. You could also use the MW trap and external ferrite for this purpose. The trap would tune out the offending local MW transmitter, and the longer MW coupling ferrite would provide sufficient capacitive coupling in proximity to the telescopic aerial; it might work better without an earth connection. Experiment - but dont connect a longwire to the telescopic aerial directly! Michael UK ----- Original Message --------------------

Thanks Michael, you must be 100% correct because I have noticed with Both the Grundig G3 and Tecsun PL 380 there is No improvement to Broadcast Band / MW - even with wrapping the Longwire Antenna Jumper Wire around the Whip Aerial or Radio Case on either Radio!! There is however a great improvement to Shortwave listening with wrapping that jumper wire around the Whip Aerial.

The result of listening to SW is different when (outside) ferrite bar is connected or not. Marc -- The "Penguin" has arrived - and he's not going away - ever.
