!! Urgent !! - Suggest a good shortwave reciever for around $100.00
desai_amogh <desai_amogh@...>
Hi guys,
Sorry for the URGENT tag. However, one of my friedn is coming down from US next week and wish to order a Shortwave receiver for around $100.00. It should good selectivity, sensitivity and features (like IF output for DRM reception would be a good to have). Also SSB is a must have. I am planning to buy it from www.universal-radio.com. Also I I stay in a ground floor of an apartment covered with buildings and get a lot of interference. Will it help if I buy an Active loop antenna for better reception?? How about Grundig 450DLX and Tecsun PL660 ?? or any other option ? Look forward to hearing from you guys. Regards Amogh Pune, India. |

I am sure there are other fine radios out there, but for the money it is as good if not better in some respects to my Sony SW7600GR, with one exception the Sony imo is better on MW and has a better sync detector circuit, but not by whole lot and it costs another $40+. I have a Grundig 350DL which the 450DL replaces it is a good radio but large and heavy. If I had to choose between the two my cigar goes to the Tecsun PL-660 with big sound and portablity. It is loud enough that on FM I listen to a local sation when I am in the shower! :-) Good Luck, Big Al N0CEK --- In ultralightdx@..., "desai_amogh" <desai_amogh@...> wrote:

My PL-600 worked quite well briefly, and had a very directional pick up pattern for AM DXing, but it died a very early death. I also have a SONY SW7600G which has to be 10 or 15 years old and works perfectly. The audio is 'thin' sounding through the speaker, but nice with headphones, and it has a line output for computer speakers or a stereo amp. The newer model can be purchased for not all that much more money from camera stores in the NYC area, or other sources which discount SONY. The Synchronous detection is quite good, and helps in some situations DXing AM as well as SW. [It tunes SSB too]

Already mentioned, but I wholeheartedly agree - Tecsun PL-660. I own more radios than I should and for that price point, the PL-660 is a great value.

I own the Sony that was mentioned as well, and I prefer the Tecsun. --- In ultralightdx@..., "just_rtfm" <just_rtfm@...> wrote:

The Tecsun PL660 is great bang for your buck. I purchased one two months ago and love it, it has pretty much all you need in a small, relatively inexpensive receiver.

I did own a Degen DE1103, It died 2 years ago, when I modded it for DRM and slept off listening to it on a rainy day with a dead radio in the morning. Couple of my HAM friends trying repairing it, but some of the front end parts are gone and then I moved to a new city and the radio is lying in the drawer. Back to the point. Can the PL660 be modded for DRM reception. I mean is it possible to get the IF out of PL660 ?? I searched the internet for this alot but dont see anything about DRM reception using this PL660. There are few DRM transimissions over India which will increase with time and I'm very much interested in DRM. I will be very happy to buy a Tecsun PL660 if someone could confirm DRM mod is possible. The newfangled digiprocessed whatsits are probably all DRM-unfriendly.

You need a low IF offshoot for DRM. Build your own, as real men do, or use a legacy receiver, such as a 7600 with a low-IF add-on, as real men do... There be useful notes on the world-wide webthingy. DRM is so good that it probably has a limited immediate future. Even though BBC and Deutsche Welle persist, the ruled-by-conglomerates market decides what is best... Getting legacy receiver is an issue hear.. and talking about limited immediate future of DRM.. dont know abt other countries.. but AIR has already declared that, they are converting all existing stations to DRM by 2015. So at least by next year I expect 10 stations on DRM in India (Hopefully). Also there are other countries covering Asia as well.

I have already made the "low-IF add-on" "as real men do" and was using it with Degen DE 1103 but it died.. So, Does this mean Tecsun PL660 is not worth the DRM + Low IF add-on thing ??? Regards Amogh So overall --- In ultralightdx@..., "Michael" <michael.setaazul@...> wrote:

The decadent West has sold its soul to DAB, an inferior option. Others are invited to comment, but my understanding is that the new DSP chips would not be readily DRM-friendly. It would surely be possible to build or buy a suitable old-fashioned receiver to feed DRM software from your former IF down-converter. You might wish to check how it might conform to uldx criteria. However, if antenna extravaganzas are accepted, a DRM-add-on might receive an innovation dispensation :-) Michael UK ----- Original Message -----
