Just trying to fill in my log in the 900 to 1000 segment tonight.
950 WIBX Utica, NY 5 kW 970 WNYM serving NYC, but New Jersey address 5 kW 980 WOFX Troy, NY [near Albany] 5kW
The above are 5 kW stations within a few hundred miles.
This one looks to good to be true-
990 WTIG Massilion,Ohio 112W [only 250W day] ?
ESPN Radio. I clearly heard a 'Subway' restaurant ad, ESPN Radio ID, and sports talk for awhile. No Call letters, but I can't find a listing for any other ESPN station on 990 any closer. I can still hear it under a religious station with Chuck Colson, and one or two Spanish stations with music formats. I wish I stayed with it longer when it was coming in better. Anyone know if there power went up, or of any recent format changes to ESPN Radio in the Northeast on 990?

I'd swear I heard ESPN myself on 990 but it was last winter. Never could find a match. CKGM comes through with 'sports' but no mention of ESPN on their website. Also I know I've heard ESPN with Canadian programming but forget if it was 990. (No ESPN Canadian Stations ?)
This area without a directional antenna to me is all mixed up. I mostly hear WDCX on 990 Rochester,NY with religious programming but it comes and goes every few minutes. Sports in background. (CKGM assumed)
980 nothing clear here but hear baseball all the time. I guess this is the Albany,NY area station.
With stations in and out every few minutes or less hard to get an ID. ESPN might only ID on the hour except call itself ESPN 990, etc. Baseball maybe more frequent. Ads Ads Ads on the breaks. Mostly 'national' ads vs. local. Talk ? ID on hour ?
I'm not looking at a list now but I've only been doing this for a few months after being away from the hobby for a long time.
I'm in SW Connecticut and under the influence of New York City HD stuff that makes some frequencies difficult.--but 900 area nothing but 970 NJ ? (station with power) 930 weak here. (NJ) WELI 960 New Haven, Ct.does a number here. Hate to be in New Haven with it's HD hsssssssssssss.
990 Southington, Ct. I think I finally caught their ID for recording. Not sure anybody could understand it. (Spanish I think)
Here the whole AM BCB is a mess at night. Only thing you can hope to do is pick something out of the mess by oddball luck.
I can't believe their are not other areas more open to dx'ing than the NE USA. Look at all the stations from Virginia, PA.DE,NJ,NY,CT,MA etc. Many with 'enhanced power' vs years ago.
I've logged only 3 Vermont's 550,620..and 1380 is it ? (Rutland) Maine is as scarce as can be. I hear 1280 Gardner/Augusta ? and rare WZON 620. (Bangor)

You have done well to get VT and Maine. Even though I am closer, they are very difficult to get more than one station each for me in the opposite corner of CT. There is a Sports Station on 990 in Tennessee as well, but it is not ESPN. The ID I heard was ESPN 990. - FARMERIK

980 kHz here in New Haven County looks like Mets on WOFX Troy, NY, Washinton Nationals on WTEM Wash., DC, Yankees on ??? haven't figured that one out, but might be RedSox... heard that one tonite, but sure its Yanks as announcers were Yank announcers. Spanish Tropical on WSUB in Groton, CT.
990 used to be quite a mix here a few years ago when WXCT was a news/info station. Since format to Spanish/Spanish religion its dominating at nite, tho its supposed to be only 80 Watts. Daytime/ sunrise/sunset you might get WLGZ Rochester or WNTP Phila.
940kHz is the only other interesting station in the 900's since CINW went to FM. Its nearly a dead channel here. Though WINE from Danbury area (CT) does come in here daytime with ESPN just like WLAD and WPUT. I have an UNid with 50's Standards occasionally popping in at nite but no WINE with its 4 Watts of ear-splitting power ;)
ME & VT: suggestions include 1390kHz (both possible), 1450 and 1490 (VT).
I have to agree its quite a noise bucket on 960 and 1080 up here. 1070 and 1090 (WBAL) are wipe-outs. WBAL barely gets here at nite, and its noisy. Bad move by 'TIC... nothing wrong with their old equipment.

620 WVMT Vermont is almost a pest here. It's always there. 630 WPRO RI is much worse. I get it days 'weak' but at night can't catch much on 630 as WPRO is always there.
I always heard WDEV 550 Vermont up into last winter season but don't seem to hear them anymore. Sometimes at night the 'Radio Disney' in Rhode Island but always weak. 550 chronically has about nothing on it here.
I seem to mostly get New York State, PA and some others further south.
A powerhouse here has been WJDY 1470 in MD. Gotta really wonder the power.
KHJ..CKHJ? 1260 WAS nice and strong from NB into last winter but I only pick it up on 1260 off and on.

It is interesting how the three of us in Connecticut, a state only about 60X90 miles, hear different stations on the same frequencies. As Paul and I noted before, I get WBAL in Baltimore MD much better than WTIC in Hartford CT. and the opposite is true for him. - FARMERIK

I would also like to add the possibility of the long-awaited Saskatchewan Moose located on 940 kHz. Folks in the New England area should give this a try with reception from slightly North of Due West. I am hearing Country music on both the PL200 and PL310 after midnite but no moose call yet. The Adult Standards was weak before 11PM EDT. Recently targeting this frequency just before sunset WINE faded out and I got a weak-but-clear-call of WKYK about 5 minutes later... didn't last either, maybe 2-3 minutes at best. Yes. I forgot. WGN 550 was coming through last fall but have not heard it of recent.
Chronically. Decades ? 550 here there is mostly nothing on it. It would make a good place for another station on 550 say in Danbury,Ct. with most the signal southbound. I guess that does not agree with specs at the FCC, etc.
I sort of become biased at some of these 'ethnic stations'. They yap/yap/yap 24/7 and hardly ever ID. Then the ID might not be understandable. I'd guess they serve their audience but that's about it. (?) FCC regs might not even say: ID in English. (?)
I'd guess there is no law saying the USA is English.
Religious stations. To me if you want to listen to such 24/7..well
I might see a future of 'all religious' 'of different religions' fighting with each other on the AM BCB. Regulated by the FCC. Government into religion ?
WSUB 980 I can hear when I go down the beach as I said. Trying to record an ID has been frustrating. For a long time listen 10 minutes prior to the hour till 10 after..no ID... just yap yap yap
740 Long Island..ID ?...they don't ID....
1080 WTIC has never been strong into SW Connecticut. In day it's listenable but at night it fades in and out. If trying to listen the Boston Red Sox baseball it's hard. (no other outlets around here)(no..not sports nut) I think they have their antennas on a mountain and most stations look for a place that's low and wet and the more conductive the better. Yet WTIC is an ancient station so they must know what they are doing. Probably their signal just skips over Connecticut !!!
There is something to 'different things' 'nightime' in a small state. Just listen to the car radio and the 'night scan' will have a little different reception than 50 miles away, etc.
For ultralight I just have a Grundig G8 and G5 now. I have not yet got together a 'directional antenna'. ya know..that G8 in a day comparison the Sony ICF-38 does better !!!! and sounds better.. I think the G8 is more selective and get around 'sundown' you get something coming through on every channel. (separate !!!)
My Sony ICF-350W and 380 are ultra-lights I guess. Guess the age. Bought from Service Merchandise a few years before they closed. The 350 quit working. By today's standards of 'junk' the radios are not too bad.
This post was not meant to open up politics/religion !!!! Just can't ignore all the ethnic stations and religious.(?)

Yes.

550 WGR Buffalo, NY.
I just followed the post with a reply not thinking too much.
The other day I heard 1350 WNLK Norwalk,Ct. ID as WALK which is another station on Long Island,NY in same area. Maybe the radio guy got confused.
WGR ? I used to receive it but that HD on WOR 710 and other New York City stations does a number to adjacent stations.

For Ultralights I have a Tecsun R-911, PL-200, and PL-310. Three different types of reception, conventional analog, Digital PLL, and Digital DSP. I must say the PL-310 can grab quite a nice signal. If it could run on 2AA's instead of 3AA's with Soft-Mute defeat switch, it would be perfect. The R-911 is super for general listening NY/BOS daytime, and quite good overnite. I can and have listened to Austrailia on Shortwave near greyline (thats 10000 miles). Of course both of the others do a bit better, and the PL-310 can be nearly clean copy at times. Have to be rather precise with the antennas on all 3 ;)

I have been sort of hesitant to invest in tiny things. Yes..they are convenient... I don't want to spoil the fun but for the same price should I buy something tiny or say a Sangean PR-D5P. (?) Then of coarse the Sangean is kind of heavyweight and not too easy to carry around. The old GE Super-Radio was nice but kind of big and bulky. So far the Grundig's are nice for me as something small to take on a trip or a hike or walk, etc. I see so much talk about different radios here I'm not sure what the best buy is now. o-forgot..I did buy one of those Sangean DT400W's yellow pocket radios. Hate to scare anybody but :::::::::: That 740 station on Long Island runs at 25 kw and mostly a salt water path to me. I think it mostly yaps in Korean now. It never shuts up. WLIE 540 is almost as bad. Sure..250 watts at night ? At power-switch time their signal goes UP. I do seem to notice of very recent their signal does seem much weaker at night than prior. 740. I spent a portion of my life trying to hear an ID. I lost my patience. I complained to the FCC. I must note I am not a complainer and about the only time I might complain or ? about somebody/something is maybe if I saw a neighbor storing dead bodies in their basement or something very strange. I'd guess I would complain if I were trying to solve RFI problems or something like that. (the utility) WNYH 740 yapping in tongue's overloading my receivers month after month and can't even ID as most others do ? Everybody has their 'limitations'.(?) http://picasaweb.google.com/minemtn/FCC?feat=directlinkI guess nobody has to ID anymore. Sort of a dead hobby if no stations have to ID ? gotta run...

I don't know where you are but in the case of WLIE the pattern change is pretty drastic. Plus they have a CP (construction permit) going on so that may account for recent changes. http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/finder?call=wlie&x=9&y=8&sr=Y&s=CI guess nobody has to ID anymore. Sort of a dead hobby if no stations have to ID ? Preaching to the choir! The ethnic stations in particular seem to have a free pass on IDing. I don't think the FCC requires English language IDs. That was probably never an issue back when the rules were written. I live in Puerto Rico USA and they certainly don't ID in English here. -Bill

Somebody sort of agrees with me !!!
I mean no offense but it is true the foreign language stations seem to get away with no ID's or power or ??
I can understand Puerto Rico and if the normal language is Spanish why ID in an abnormal language ?
Yet..anyway..the normal language here has been English...
If you look at those radio-locator maps I am in the area of Bridgeport, Ct. To the west and a few miles inland from the ocean. (at least at this time)
By the charts no way should WLIE 540 be booming in here night times but most their signal should be going southbound out into the ocean. 220 Watts ? I know on 540 you get good ground wave coverage but splattering all around 540 at midnight ? All the New York City stations the ground wave does a poor job into this area except WFAN 660/WCBS 880 which are 50kw/50kw a few miles down the coast. (and HD hssssssssssssssssssss)
WLIE 540...hmmmm I've been in the middle of Connecticut and they boom into there nights...
I've heard them at power change 'some switching sounds' and signal goes down then more switching and signal goes UP. Any audience out in the ocean ?
As said..of recent it seems as their signal has gone down at nights.. Maybe they are changing something..
Another pest. I can get more irritated because they are non-english I guess. Even if they played some music I might listen to them at times.
Many non-English stations in area such as WDJZ 1530..WADS 690 have a habit of signing off at sundown..or forgetting to...
Many are guilty there I guess. I'd guess if you are a daytimer you would really like to 'stay on a little longer'....
Like WLAD Danbury,Ct. 800 tried forever to have a better signal. 800 Canada booms into the area. They got 850 and got night power and then there was some big stink from Boston 850 and something went bad and had no night priveledge anymore. WREF 850. --and I hear them sometimes running at night-- WREF/WLAD were the same company but I'm not sure what Corporation runs them now and if they are still affiliated. Their luck might be 800 Canada vanishing.
Probably everybody has a local pest. oooooooooooooooooo..I wish they would go away !!!! o--for dxing at least they sign off at night !!! hmmmmmmmmm
740 with 25kw booms into here in it's Korean language. hey..can't they at least ID every few monthes ?
1050 New Ork City ESPN 1050 also has a seperate signal on 1040. Not just the HD stuff. (or maybe it's related) It might be the receiver and if somebody had the math maybe there is a reason. Every receiver ?
Well...gotta quit yapping and complaining...
I'd like to be down there just to listen to a different collection of 'dx'. Do all those Caribbean countries still have AM'ers running ? or like the 'Canada syndrome'...

I see (hear) a lot of evidence to that end. I can understand Puerto Rico and if the normal language is Spanish why ID in an abnormal language ? Weeel, not to drift off into political matters...the stations in PR are regulated by the same FCC rules as the mainland and if the FCC doesn't specifically indicate an English language ID then the Spanish, Kurdu or Esperanto or whatever ID is apparently acceptable. I don't know if that's "law" or something that has just been accepted because there is no specific "law". By the charts no way should WLIE 540 be booming in here... WLIE 540...hmmmm I've been in the middle of Connecticut and they boom into there nights... I've heard them at power change 'some switching sounds' and signal goes down then more switching and signal goes UP. Any audience out in the ocean ? The maps tend to be somewhat generic. Just like has been indicated in some recent posts it doesn't take much distance from a shore or salt marsh or inland soil to really goof up the predictions. Maps like radio-locator. com certainly cannot cover every detail but do give a good general overview. Waxing on the same subject...in my younger days we beached at Myrtle Beach, SC. The ONLY stations to be heard that carried music of the day were WAPA in Jacksonville, FL, WMBL Morehead City, NC, weakly WGNI? from Wilmington NC. If you toted the picnic radio a few hundred yards away from the beach you pretty much lost reception on those stations. Suffice to say (again) that even a few hundred yards can make a difference in reception. Many non-English stations in area such as WDJZ 1530..WADS 690 have a habit of signing off at sundown..or forgetting to... Many are guilty there I guess. I'd guess if you are a daytimer you would really like to 'stay on a little longer'.... haha, I have a war story. I once caught a station in Virginia going thru the usual afternoon signoff. They reminded the listeners that they were still available on their FM outlet. The AM never shut down. I called them on the phone and the guy seemed tickled to hear that some schmuck from a state away was actually listening to them and they 'corrected' the problem immediately :) Probably everybody has a local pest. oooooooooooooooooo..I wish they would go away !!!! o--for dxing at least they sign off at night !!! hmmmmmmmmm My pest is about 1600 feet away, WIVV on 1370. At least they drop to 1kw at night. I can easily tell when they don't. I'd like to be down there just to listen to a different collection of 'dx'. Do all those Caribbean countries still have AM'ers running ? or like the 'Canada syndrome'... Many of the islands still maintain their traditional AM outlets. PR itself is still big on local AM stations since their is no Rush/ESPN type automated programming generally available to turn the locally owned stations into non-IDing robots. If there is a gripe to be had from this listening location its the wall of 50kw broadcasters from Venezuela (~500 miles) on what seems like every other AM channel at night. Some of them are regulars even during daytime. During the day from my location Radio Caracas on 750 (100kw) is almost as strong as R. Puerto Rico (WIAC) on 740 which is only 60 miles away. When Hugo decides to give a 4-hour speechrant you can forget IDing any Venezuelan. That's good in a way since any station NOT broadcasting his speech is almost guaranteed to be outside of Venezuela which generally counts as a good DX mark. :) -Bill

540 WLIE is a tuff station here, maybe I should have my radios aligned :) WCKY on 1530 booms in here at nite during fall/winter. Never heard WREF much after dark. Uptown, it comes in better than right here. Both WLAD and WINE are marginal daytime here. 740 WNYH? should ID in English at top of hour: its the law.
Interesting about 1040/1050. It seems that 1040 fills a null in 1050's coverage. I have heard both simultaneously. 1040 keeps me from hearing WHO Des Moines (but its Coast to Coast overnite like 1080,1100,1110 1120... can you say carpet-bomb?)

Dont know your log, but 920/930 is interesting around here. A canadian and RI on 920, Buffalo at least on 930. OT: When that jet crashed just outside Buffalo in Feb 2009, I listened to WBEN overnite. Good job field reporting./OT

From what I see on the web it seems an AM'er in the Carribbean is rare. BUT I'm not sure these websites list everything--
If anybody is old enough they can remember a number of Caribbean stations coming through to the USA. I guess mostly religious ones. Then they had their qsl cards.
Static level there high ?
I do run my rants on the quality of radio receivers today. If anything caused the death of AM RADIO if you feed the population the normal radio on the market AM STINKS and travels only 3 miles. These consumer radios in stores now if you can find any STINK. Even a $50 Sony Boom-Box in stores now. I brought one home because it had direct recording to cassette and in my area of many many stations it was terrible as to sensitivity..AM or FM.. I took it back.
So at least you can thank groups like this for at least spreading the word about potential radios to buy for 'some quality'.
I do need to speak or understand Spanish but I wonder--at my age ?
I do not know about AM Radio in South America or even Central America. It seems there is a huge list for Mexico but don't know if any are operating. Cuba. Well...there they still drive 1948 cars ?
I saw an application from some Brasil AM station a few months ago but forget where I saw it. One Million Watts.
Up here if it were not for all the stuff on AM dial I'd imagine many stations could be heard from down there.
As it is here in NE USA there is always that endless 'Spanish Stations' down in the mud on allot of channels that I could never make out an ID.
In Amateur Radio the 1800 khz area South America is not too difficult.
In my opinion people are more interested in LOCAL PROGRAMMING than some station with a 'satellite feed' 24/7 pretending they are local. Ever hear the time ? Anything current. Even the weather ? (local weather from weather headquarters in ?) I'd guess it's financial. Pay employees at a station ?
The Talk Shows. I guess they are on because people listen to them. BUT guess the format ? Every day Every Day negative negative negative vs. some political party. Even if it's not true. (who remembers ?) Ya know...why not some 'other opinion allowed' ??
I've yapped enough.

hmmm..You hear 1050 on 1040 ? It voids most 1040 dxing here.
I sometimes away from this area where 1050 NY is weaker I do pick up a weak station 1040 with country and almost sounds like an 'ethnic station'. Gotta be CJMS. Don't know why not.
WLIE is so strong here Days and that long ground-wave you gotta get it in Connecticut. (?)
