Advice / Question

stann50 <l8r2day@...>

As much as I like the G8 I have, I was playing around with a G3 this weekend. The g3 has several things I like about it better than the G8. Does anyone have both, and which is actually better on MW?
I realize the G3 prob doesn't qualify as an UL, but given today's tech, anything under 25lbs is UL from when I was growing up.

Thanks,
Stan.

I have a G3, a G8 and a G6.  The G8 is the most sensitive, followed by the G6 and the G3 far behind.  There are features I like on the G3, but the sensitivity and functioning of the sync detector are VERY dissappointing.  The G6, run with the power adapter is just about as good as the G8, and without it,  NOT.  That's because the power adapter gives an additional  1.5 volts and it makes a large difference.

My experience is that the newer G3's are MUCH better with sync; they hold lock on very weak signals (try out some new samples that show up at Radio Shack). Another alternative that works is using ssb and zero beating the signal. The dx/local switch is really a low pass filter...on ssb and sync in locales with local am stations, mixing products impact reception (the G6 has a similar problem, but no dx/local switch to offer help...touching the antenna helps). The local position deals with this very well on the G3. Not a big sensitivity loss, and indiscernable above about 13 MHz (Of course, on mw, there is no need to put it in local). On mw, the G3 appears similar to the G6 head to head on batteries. Sync and choice of upper and lower sideband is a plus. The G5, by contrast, is quite sensitive across the mw band (the G3 & G6 are much less sensitive above about 1300 KHz).

Richard,
Thanks for the response. I've read the sync on the G3 has greatly improved since it's introduction. My listing is almost exclusively MW. I've given up on SW as most of the interesting players are no longer on the air. Sync is nice but not essential, if one can tune up/down 1-2 khz to get rid of the interference. How does the G5 stack up to the G8?

Hi Stan,

I have several small radios. I don't have G8 but I have
PL310 and D96L. Personally I am very disappointed in both
of those DSP receivers. They have too much internally
generated noise and strange AGC action (hard to use them
with additional magnetic loop antenna and AGC pumping
makes weak signals reception really bad).

For casual MW listening as well as DXing my G5 and DE1103
work so much better. Although G5 has better ergonomics and
sound quality than 1103, I discovered that G5 I own has
some het on 540 kHz while DE1103 is "clean" (on the other
hand, the 1103 has more noisy LCD backlighting but this can
be turned off).

So currently the DE1103 is my top performer on MW as far
as small (but not "ultralight") radios are concerned.
In "ultralight" category the Sony SFR59 was and still
remains my favorite. :)

It's just my $0.02...

Good luck!
Peter

Stan <l8r2day@...>

Thanks to all who responded.
I ended up getting a G5 and have had it for about a day.
The G5 seems to be better on MW than the G8, can't tell for sure, as I took the G8 back.
The G5 is pretty close to the Sony 2010 on MW, but there is no contest on SW which is the better receiver.

All in all I'm pleased with the G5. It's not a true UL but it's still lighter than the 2010!!

Thanks again;
Stan
