Operation MULDxER!
jim_kr1s <jkearman@...>
Chris Knight's business trip to Melbourne, Florida was the occasion for Operation MULDxER (The DX is Out There!), the first Melbourne Ultra Light Dxpedition, Exhibition and Radiofest. The event got underway with dinner at Paisano's Italian restaurant, overlooking the Indian River Lagoon. Between mouthfuls of delicious Chicken Catch-A-T-A, we talked about ultralights, antennas, DXing, ham radio, politics, bird watching.... the gamut.
Well-nourished, we headed for the parking lot to do some DXing. The only thing between us and the Atlantic was the barrier island, and conditions were superb. Using only an unmodified, barefoot PL-380 we logged 20 countries in a couple of hours. Chris and I have only a bit more than 80 years of combined DXing experience. No doubt more-experienced DXers with spotting receivers could have done better. We didn't bother logging domestics except the annoying Emergency Radio station on 1610 that kept us from making Anguilla #21. Here's a list of one station per country logged; some, like Algeria, Bahamas, Canada, Cuba, Mexico and Venezuela were logged more than once. 530 CMBQ Cuba 530 RVC Turks & Caicos 558 R Farhan Iran (tentative) 612 RTM Morocco 621 R Nacional Canary Islands 630 WUNO Puerto Rico 639 R Nacional Spain 750 YVKS Venezuela 783 R Mauretanie Mauritania 790 ZBVI BVI 800 PLB Neth. Cool pictures, Jim! I do have a question thnough. Who is who in those pictures? Another thing, thanks for the wake up call on Turks and Caicos 530. I had forgotten they've been reported active again, and I've been forgetting to check for them. I haven't logged them yet here in Texas. Looks and sounds like you fellas had a good time. Wish I could have been there! 73, Kirk Allen Pasadena, TX |

Chris is the youngster. :) > Another thing, thanks for the wake up call on Turks and Caicos 530. I had forgotten they've been reported active again, and I've been forgetting to check for them. I haven't logged them yet here in Texas. They're tough here at home under R Encic. Usually only loggable just at sunset when the ionosphere to Havana is in transition. Melbourne is only 80 miles north, but R Encic is considerably weaker there. Have you logged TIRI on 530? That one's tough for me, as I have R Encic on about the same bearing. Couldn't sort it out last night. A surprise was not getting a whisper from R Farda on 1575. > Looks and sounds like you fellas had a good time. Wish I could have been there! We really had a good time, stayed up til almost midnight, when I had to drive home and let the young man get some sleep. I'm always happy to meet other radio folks in person. Plan on going to Orlando Hamcation, if that meets anyone's schedule. 73, Jim, KR1S http://qrp.kearman.com/ |

73,I sure haven't logged that one in OK or down here in TX. To be honest, I haven't checked 530 for quite a while, but w/ your tips in hand, I'll be going there more often. THANK YOU, Jim! Kirk Allen Pasadena, TX |

If nothing else, you can listen to the Lite Music from Havana. Congrats on 10 countries! 73, Jim, KR1S http://qrp.kearman.com/ |

As Jim (KR1S) detailed in this thread, we had a great time and heard lots of
DX on a stock PL-380! Later that evening at the hotel, I turned the PL-380 back on for a pre-bedtime DX session. Here is a partial list: 530 RVC Turks & Caicos. Nice voice ID clear of R. Enciclopedia @ 0534 UTC. 570 Radio Reloj Cuba. Ticks and "RR" @ 0539 UTC. // 790, 820, 830, 850, 860, 870, 930, 960, 1020. 600 Radio Rebelde Cuba. "Rebelde" slogan @ 0542 UTC. // 620, 670, 710, 770, 1180. 1030 WBZ Boston, MA. @ 0557 UTC. Local talk program. 1070 WAPI Birmingham, AL @ 0559 UTC. "The Big Talker". 1300 WMEL Cocoa Beach, FL @ 0605 UTC. "AM 13 hundred, WMEL". + many Radio Progreso Cubans. I'll be on business here in Palm Bay, FL for at least a couple more days. So, DXing will continue. 73, Chris Knight (N0IJK) |
