1610 confusion
Hi Jim,
The 10 kw 1610-Anguilla beacon, with programming exactly as you describe
(the late Dr. Gene Scott and his daughter preaching sermons) has been heard all
the way here to Washington state, giving a USA address as you
describe.
A recording of 1610-Anguilla on a stand-alone C.Crane
SWP 7.5" Slider model here in Washington state last February is linked at

Hi Jim,
Glad to help on the identification of 1610-Anguilla.
I used to feel pretty good about receiving the station in Washington state,
until I found out that Tony King in Greytown, New Zealand had also heard it
(with his Tecsun R9012, no less). Somehow my own reception seemed pretty
ordinary after that :-)

Listening on 1610 to two weak signals. One is a woman preaching in English, the other is playing American soft rock. Most of the time they're both in the noise, but directions seem to favor N and NW from SE Florida. I know there are stations in Montreal and Toronto; can I possibly be hearing them? Barefoot PL-380. Neither of them is R Reloj in Cuba, which I am not hearing at all, for some reason. But I could believe one of them is a Cuban from another network, playing old American pop. At one point I thought it might be R Enciclopedia, switched on the G8 and tuned them in on 530, but the 1610 went away first.

Seems likely the music was coming from either CHHA or CJWI. Right in the mix is I think, Tom Scott, or his double, preaching. I heard the tail end of an announcement giving a US address, specifying "United States." English religious BC doesn't correlate with the Wiki articles on either Canadian station and I suspect it's in the Caribbean, but maybe they're leasing time on the other Canadian station.

Sorry to keep answering my own posts.... :) The preaching is Anguilla. Thanks to Gary for a February post to IRCA about this one. It's in parallel with 6090, which is loud enough on the G8 that I didn't even have to extend the whip.
The other station is still unknown. I couldn't make out the language and the bloody MP3 recorder filled up just before they went silent at 0300Z... Will try them tomorrow. But it seems more likely to be CHHA in Toronto, even though CJWI in Montreal is supposed to be stronger. They're both 1 kW and about the same distance from me. If CJWI was in there, I couldn't hear them. The language sounded like Spanish or Portuguese, not French. CHHA's site shows programming now, but there is nothing there now but the preaching, which gave me Excedrin Headache #1610. Woohoo, two new countries tonight, and two shy of 200 ULR stations logged since November 28. :) 73, Jim, KR1S |

This has got to be the best racket since Enron. :) ZL is 8700 miles from Anguilla, and an all-water path. He probably hears them better than I do, not that I'm complaining. Let's go to the phones! 73, Jim, KR1S |

Jim,
After February 21, 2005, anyone in hearing range of Gene Scott's voice has to be a long way off. ;) Gil |

Hi Jim, Your possible SS speaking sta here I suspect might just be XEAUCH out of Chapingo. I hrd them last night w/ a pretty fair sig here in the Houston area. They play a wide variety of mx which does include pops from the USA at times. I've hrd them signing off anywhere from 0300 to 0330 UTC. Depending on who's at the healm, sometimes there's a lot of dead air between songs. S/off usually consists of the XE Nat'l Anthem. Hope maybe this helps some. 73, Kirk Allen Pasadena, TX |

The pop music I heard the other night turned out to be the interlude music from the Beacon, which they play while you go to the phone and make a donation. Only in my case I went to the microwave and made some popcorn. :) 73, Jim, KR1S |

Could also be 1600 WKZK out of North Augusta, South Carolina.
They play a black gospel format but will have some preaching and sorts inbetween. They almost never give their call sign but on the hour. They do run local commericials though which can be a tale if this is it or not. I get them or WWRL out of New York on 1600 here. But I live in Leesville, SC which only puts me 35 miles from the WKZK transmitter. |

I have a homemade regen that has logged lots of DX. Got seduced into the ULR stuff a month ago by the shady characters on this group. :) At the high end of the band the tuning resolution is a little tight and it takes some doing to tell frequencies 10 kHz apart. Not so with the PL-380 at 1- or 2-kHz selectivity! A station 10-kHz away may splatter a bit into the passband, but you won't be able to copy much of the audio. It is a tribute to the DSP that a station 1 kHz away (such as when listening to 1521 or 981 TAs) sounds like SSB, that distinctive Donald Duck audio due to the carrier being clipped off. 1610 is a neat frequency to park on. Let's hope FCC doesn't decide to start loading it up with stations. 73, Jim, KR1S |
