2023 DX Challenge

I am starting to think about planning a DX Challenge for 2023. 

I want this to be something that anybody can do, so it can't be too focused on any specific stations, more the band in general.

Does that make sense?

Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions?

I really liked the two contests that were held in the early days of the ULR craze.  I entered both and had a lot of fun.

I suspect this was before my time. The amateur community have a lot of competitions, field days and so on, I would like us to do the same.

What kind of challenges do you have in mind?  I have two that I run through DX Central

1.) A weekly frequency challenge - this is where we focus on a frequency (or range of them) and try to hear as many stations as we can.  There is a Google Form so folks can submit entries from the listening period and we announce who the top dog was (most logs), most states/prov heard, most countries, furthest reception, etc. New frequency every week, I always post the announcement of the new frequency along with previous week results here in the ULDX group.  This is not specific to ultralight DXers/DXing but is absolutely open to anyone who wants to DX using UL gear!
2.) The TIS/HAR challenge - running through spring, to log as many TIS/HAR stations as possible.  Again, a Google Form is there for entries.  Categories for both home and 'rover' receptions.

On the homepage, scroll down to the blog posts and there is one for the TIS/HAR along with the recent MW Frequency Challenge posts.

If you are looking for something specific to Ultralight, i remember last year or maybe the year before there was a challenge specific to ultralight DXing.  I don't remember the specifics, but if anyone knows where the old posts were, I am sure they have all of the details.  We (DX Central) would absolutely love to help host a challenge for Ultralight DXing!!

Thanks Loyd, your website has a lot of good information.

I have taken part in your weekly challenges in the past, they are a great idea. I would love to see something like that in this group, which would generate some discussion and get members to challenge themselves (and each other).

One idea I have had is to run a monthly challenge for each part of the band, for example:
January - 520 - 599kHz
February - 600 - 699kHz
and so on.

I have started adding this to MWDXerDB as a separate option, with its own logging and reporting section.

I am happy to look at a few ideas and options. 

We don't need to do only one challenge and can have more than one running at the same time. I have already started adding some code to MWDxerDB to allow these challenges to be easily added and reports generated.

Don't know if there would be any interest in an FM challenge to go with it?

Maybe not!  I like the TIS challenge idea also... Heck, I like all the ideas so far, LOL!

oooooo, I like the idea of an FM challenge.  Maybe a mileage challenge?  Broken into categories by propagation?  Maybe a challenge to hear something on every frequency?  That would be a tough one.  What do ya'll think?  I don't want to just push AM/MW stuff, we do FM DX here, too at DX Central....it is just harder to live stream cause the band really has to be open for it to be exciting and livestream worthy.

I'm just wondering, could those of us who do not live in the US also take part in the MW DX challenge? How will it be evaluated? We will obviously receive quite different stations and in some ways it would be unfair towards US-based participants because our MW band in South Africa is pretty much devoid of local signals, there are about four in daytime where I am,  and around seven to ten local signals (broadcasting from SA) at night. Many from Botswana and a Mozambique at night though. I think picking up distant signals is easier for us. But we have fewer signals in total, I think. Mostly from the rest of Africa, the Middle East and Europe, in my experience. So its a whole different scenario.

I am going to strat documenting a couple of different challenges over the next two weeks, while I am on leave.

Andre,

My weekly challenges that I run through DX Central always include frequencies for our non-US friends.  This past week, we have been running a range between 576-600 kHz, as an example. Some weeks, we may only do a single frequency, but I always do both a 10kHz and 9kHz split frequency at the minimum.

Keep an eye out later tonight as I will be posting the next challenge that is announced during my weekly Friday night livestream!
