Good luck with that Phil, I have put off setting up an area like this until we build in a few years time.

[odxa] WCPH 1220 Etowah, TN HOLIDAY DX TEST DEC 26 and JAN 2 [ CLARIFICATION ]

Les Rayburn

George Hudson, owner of WCPH and The Courtesy Program Committee (CPC) of the NRC and IRCA are pleased to announce two special upcoming DX Tests on both December 26 and January 2nd, 2021. Both tests will be late night Friday/Early Saturday morning from 2 AM Eastern Time until 4 AM Eastern (0700-0900 UTC).

So on Christmas night, after all the gifts are unwrapped and the grandkids have signed off from Zoom—put on some hot chocolate and join us in celebrating the 65th Anniversary of this great local station. Then do it again on New Year’s night after the bowl games have finished for the day.

WCPH 1220 AM will be doing maintenance testing at their full daytime power of 1,000 watts using their daytime pattern. The station will transmit station identifications in voice, singing jingles, and Morse Code. In addition, they will transmit sweep tones, 1 kHz long tones, and other sound effects.

WCPH is currently celebrating their 65th anniversary of serving Southeastern Tennessee. The station’s branding is “Homegrown 1220” and “Southeast Tennessee’s Oldies Station.” Their nighttime power is normally limited to 109 watts on a very crowded channel—so this test represents a unique chance to log this one.

Joe Miller, KJ8O has designed a special 65th Anniversary QSL card, which will be available to those who successfully log this holiday test. Exact details on how QSL reports will be handled are still being worked out with the station, and will be announced shortly.

For now, plan your holiday activities around these two great opportunities to log Homegrown 1220 in Etowah, TN! See you late night on Christmas Day!

I've actually made some progress.  The IsoPoles are back up and in
service (and then the Icom dual-band radio I used with them died ...
but I had another).

And I took the PL-606 apart (I still need to put that video online)
but the keyboard's not much better.

And the MLA-30+ finally arrived today.    :-)

I need to up my game in the sub-let's-call-it-2000-kHz spectrum. I
will likely start with an MLA-30+ because it's easy. Before I do
that, the 2-m and 70-cm IsoPoles need to go back up now that the
house-painting is done (it's been done a while - I am slow).

I am contemplating a Beverage or other long wire for MWDXing but the
mag loop is much more likely to actually happen given the 12456 other
unfinished projects weighing me down. :-) (projects like getting
the dead bands on my recently acquired Realistic DX-160 working and

Re: Radio Plans 2021

Paul Blundell

I have updated my plans a bit:

- Continue with my long term DXing project - in 2021 I will be expanding this.
- Expanding my time and skills on the FM band
- Start a new radio challenge, I am planning on running a different one each month.

Long Term DX Project - 21/12/2020

Paul Blundell

Date: 21/12/2020
Time: 9:00 PM
Location: Home, Launceston Tasmania
Notes: A night time session just on dark. Signals were as much as I would expect with only 3GG on 531kHz being a little down in signal level and again 2CA on 1053kHz struggling a bit, the signal for this was weak at best with some fading. I have also noticed some issues around the middle of the 1MHz part of the band which I think are partly the cause of this.

Re: Batteries

I suspect given the age that these would have been made back when they were much better quality.

Re: Batteries

I think that Duracell cells  have a very spotty track record as of late, anyway. I definitely like rechargeable cells  over any alkaline batteries. Especially for anything that does not get cells removed or replaced often.
So, yeah, until they turn things around and I have evidence of that, I avoid them.

As to the scanner guy, Paul..

"The problem was caused by 1 of the AA batteries that came out of the battery charger after charging all night that wasn't fully charged. The battery must have been bad and wouldn't fully charge anymore."

He should have checked... I always do. The MC9000 makes this extremely easy, BTW.

What can I say, crap happens. More often than not with user error involved, yes?  But if one is responsible in the use of the NiMH cells (monitoring charge levels, and capacity, occasionally. for instance), it is a rare occurrence No battery can make up for incompetence by the user!!.

Re: Batteries

Phil Pasteur

Just a tip from experience. Alkaline batteries are...well alkaline. I use something acidic when I clean up the mess. Usually some kind of vinegar. But lemon juice also works. Once the bubbling is over, I clean with water enough o neutralize the vinegar )r whatever mildly acidic solution used). Now I am talking water saturated cotton swabs. Not a fire hose...:) Then drying well with swabs or something absorbent (tissue, paper towels, etc.).
Then I treat the contacts with Deoxit. (Red then Gold). If the contacts are mostly intact, this rescues the unit every time.

I think the overwhelming responses to date are that Duracells should be avoided.

Thanks Michael.

I have plans on upgrading to a FM Yagi in the near future.

For maximum DX, I would use a dipole or yagi tuned
to the FM band and connect the coax to the FM RF stage
inside the radio. But that might be too much desecration :-)

WNJC 1360 Special Christmas DX Test TONIGHT--TONIGHT--TONIGHT

Les Rayburn

The special Christmas themed material for tonight’s DX test is going to be fun—especially for those close enough to have easy copy of the test but there are also ’treats’ for even distant listeners. Who knows you might even get a message from the ‘Big Guy!’ Tune in!

SPECIAL WNJC 1360 CHRISTMAS DX TEST

The Courtesy Program Committee (CPC) of the NRC and IRCA wanted to get word out that WNJC 1360 Washington Township, NJ will be having a 2 all night DX tests. It's a Christmas miracle! :)

12/20 01:00 - 05:00 UTC Audio DX Test (.8kw)
12/20 05:00 - 11:00 UTC Audio DX Test (5kw)

12/21 01:00 - 05:00 UTC Audio DX Test (.8kw)
12/21 05:00 - 11:00 UTC Audio DX Test (5kw)

The CPC has prepared special program content for the test, including Christmas themed jingles and liners, some “offbeat” or wacky Christmas songs, Morse Code, and Santa’s Sweep Tones.

We can’t guarantee that WNJC will be the only station playing Christmas music on 1360 during the test, but I’ll take bets that they will be the only one playing Weird Al’s “Christmas at Ground Zero.”

Reports can be sent to kc2dux@... or for a QSL card sent at least a 4x6 SASE envelope too

Duke Hamann, WNJC DX Test
PO Box 84
Dennisville, NJ 08214 USA

If you send a report by mail, please include a Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope (SASE).

Thanks to Duke Hamann and the owners of WNJC. Their extended maintenance has given us a rare opportunity to have multiple tests from the same station throughout a good portion of the DX season.
