Long Term DX Project - 24/12/2020

Date: 24/12/2020
Time: 10:15 PM
Location: Home, Launceston Tasmania
Notes: A night time session on Christmas Eve while waiting for the kids to fall asleep to play Santa :) Signals were an improvement on my last few sessions with three stations logged at excellent signal levels, five logged as good and two logged as average, this includes 2CA on 1053kHz which has suffered from poor signals of late. Both the HPON stations from Melbourne and Geelong were logged with good signals. Overall a good sessions and a nice way to spend Christmas Eve.

I think Duracell batteries used to be made better but seems like they have cut costs in recent years and they now are prone to leaking.  I also have an old AA Duracell dated 2010 in perfect shape.

WCPH 1220 Etowah, TN HOLIDAY DX TEST DEC 26 and JAN 2 [ QSL Information ]

Les Rayburn

George Hudson, owner of WCPH and The Courtesy Program Committee (CPC) of the NRC and IRCA are pleased to announce two special upcoming DX Tests on both December 26 and January 2nd, 2021. Both tests will be late night Friday/Early Saturday morning from 2 AM Eastern Time until 4 AM Eastern (0700-0900 UTC).

So on Christmas night, after all the gifts are unwrapped and the grandkids have signed off from Zoom—put on some hot chocolate and join us in celebrating the 65th Anniversary of this great local station. Then do it again on New Year’s night after the bowl games have finished for the day.

WCPH 1220 AM will be doing maintenance testing at their full daytime power of 1,000 watts using their daytime pattern. The station will transmit station identifications in voice, singing jingles, and Morse Code. In addition, they will transmit sweep tones, 1 kHz long tones, and other sound effects.

WCPH is currently celebrating their 65th anniversary of serving Southeastern Tennessee. The station’s branding is “Homegrown 1220” and “Southeast Tennessee’s Oldies Station.” Their nighttime power is normally limited to 109 watts on a very crowded channel—so this test represents a unique chance to log this one.

Joe Miller, KJ8O has designed a special 65th Anniversary QSL card, which will be available to those who successfully log this holiday test. At the request of the station, the Courtesy Program Committee will be handling QSL duties. Our requirements are as follows:

E-mail is preferred for reporting. Send an e-mail to:

It must include an .MP3 file recording of the best part of your reception. Please edit this to no more than two minutes in length. If you cannot record audio, then a detailed written report will be accepted. Please try to include the exact time that you received each element and the order they were received in. This can be matched against the source material.

We will also accept reception reports via US Mail. Mail reception reports along with a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) to:

Les Rayburn, N1LF
121 Mayfair Park
Maylene, AL 35114

If your reception is confirmed, you’ll receive a colorful QSL card in .PDF file format, suitable for printing.

For now, plan your holiday activities around these two great opportunities to log Homegrown 1220 in Etowah, TN! See you late night on Christmas Day!

Go for the Xhdata D-808, I have just bought, I had a Tecsun PL660, this Xhdata is much better, more sensitive and I receive much more stations and hamsd..

Hell no !!! The D-808 has no synchronous detector and the PL-660 is way better on SSB. The audio is much better too. The only advantage of the D-808 is that the frequency display is accurate whereas on the Tecsun it is not.

The 392's ability to input freq directly was a handy feature over the Tecsun. But it's size makes it less suitable for portable in public use.

I've actually made some progress.  The IsoPoles are back up and in
service (and then the Icom dual-band radio I used with them died ...
but I had another).

And I took the PL-606 apart (I still need to put that video online)
but the keyboard's not much better.

And the MLA-30+ finally arrived today.    :-)

I need to up my game in the sub-let's-call-it-2000-kHz spectrum. I
will likely start with an MLA-30+ because it's easy. Before I do
that, the 2-m and 70-cm IsoPoles need to go back up now that the
house-painting is done (it's been done a while - I am slow).

I am contemplating a Beverage or other long wire for MWDXing but the
mag loop is much more likely to actually happen given the 12456 other
unfinished projects weighing me down. :-) (projects like getting
the dead bands on my recently acquired Realistic DX-160 working and
figuring out how to "restore" the buttons on my Tecsun PL-606 not to

Re: Radio Plans 2021

Paul Blundell

I have updated my plans a bit:

- Continue with my long term DXing project - in 2021 I will be expanding this.
- Expanding my time and skills on the FM band
- Start a new radio challenge, I am planning on running a different one each month.

Long Term DX Project - 21/12/2020

Paul Blundell

Date: 21/12/2020
Time: 9:00 PM
Location: Home, Launceston Tasmania
Notes: A night time session just on dark. Signals were as much as I would expect with only 3GG on 531kHz being a little down in signal level and again 2CA on 1053kHz struggling a bit, the signal for this was weak at best with some fading. I have also noticed some issues around the middle of the 1MHz part of the band which I think are partly the cause of this.

I suspect given the age that these would have been made back when they were much better quality.
