Unless it's really auroral, Saudi Arabia 1521 is typically the strongest transatlantic here, and by a good margin. 2 megawatts from a coastal site on the Red Sea certainly gets the S-meter moving. Biggest from Africa is usually the 549 Algerian. Best out of Europe? This varies a lot - sometimes only Spain and southern France are delivering the goods, other times UK stations on 693, 882, 909, 1053, 1089, and 1215 are the top performers. Croatia 1134 is another huge one. Hard to say if any of the current Euro stations are up to the levels we used to get out of Kvitsoy, Norway (1314) or Langenberg, Germany (1586, 1593): those were screamers for sure.

Re: Large-Sized FSL Construction

Gary DeBock

Gregory and Others,

For those interested in large-sized FSL construction materials, I have
uploaded a photo of the 8" sized DXpedition-oriented model under
construction here. It uses 75 (Russian surplus) 160 x 8 mm ferrite
rods, a 6" diameter soft rubber plumbing pipe coupler (to hold the
fragile ferrite bars), an inner 3" core from the Funnoodle "Monster"
floating tube, strips of soft insulation to prevent frozen pipes, 2" J
& J Waterproof Tape, Oatey 4" x 4" foam closet spacing material, and
(eventually) 660/46 Litz wire from the eBay seller "Mkmak222." The
photo of the under-construction model (which will eventually be mounted
on a rubber-coated PVC protective frame) is posted at
http://www.mediafire.com/i/?sb60cm5c31e8tw4 , and has also been
uploaded to the Ultralightdx photo site.

Steve and Kevin have also constructed large-sized FSL's, and they were
both fortunate to have some Russian surplus ferrite available at the
beginning of the FSL testing. Because of the recent issues with the
Eastern European ferrite sellers on eBay, it may be difficult to obtain
such large quantities of these ferrite rods in the future (apparently
these sellers have not reacted very well to the sudden, huge increase
in demand). A builder should also decide before construction whether
his FSL will be a "shack model" or a "DXpedition model," since the
latter will need a shock-absorbing frame, with some protection from bad
weather.

Hello Gregory,

Steve and Kevin have both done more large-scale FSL experimentation
than me, but my own favorite as an inner core is the 4" diameter
floatation aid for kids in a swimming pool. This has a 1" diameter hole
through the center (which is perfect for passing a PVC tube, in a
frame), and is medium-soft to protect the ferrite during movement. It
can be wrapped with strips of soft insulation designed to prevent
freezing in pipes, to make up to an 8" diameter FSL. I'll try to upload
photos of this system tomorrow.

Gary,

What "large" round forms have you found to use as suitable bases for a
large FSL? My perusal of plastic buckets show them to be sloped, not
truly cylindrical and all I could find walking through the local "home
stores" was 12 inch Sono-tube, the stuff you form Concrete pillars out
of.

Also, I did receive a large quantity of 100x20x3 "Russian Ferrite" bars
from a East European Ebayer. So far I've had little time to test,
initial results were not favorable, perhaps I got some cheap Ferrite
substitute?

Cheers,

Gregory

Hello All,

Those hoping to purchase a large number of Soviet surplus ferrite
bars
at low rates from the Eastern European sellers (on eBay) may
discover
that the experience is like playing financial Russian Roulette. The
sudden, heavy demand for these ferrite bars and rods has apparently
turned some of the sellers into scammers-- even some with 100% (or
99%)
eBay feedback ratings..

Because of the very high cost of ferrite material from domestic
suppliers, Steve, Kevin and I have all ordered a sizable number of
ferrite rods and bars from these Eastern European sellers to make
large-scale Ferrite Sleeve Loop antennas. The new design uses a
very
large number of ferrite rods (or bars) arranged in a cylindrical
pattern with a hollow core, then wrapped with Litz (or stranded)
wire
to form an inductively-coupled loop. The purchase of multiple
ferrite
bars from domestic sources can easily cost many hundreds of
dollars,
providing an incentive to order the Russian surplus ferrite on
eBay (at
about 10% of the domestic price).

Unfortunately, during the past couple of months, we have
experienced
the following shady behavior from a couple of the "best-rated" eBay
sellers:

1) Listing of ferrite material that is not actually available
2) Notice of "shipments" that were never actually made
3) Shipment of Incorrect Items
4) Claims that "shipments" were accidentally returned
5) No notice of any shipment for more than a month

To protect their high feedback ratings these sellers apparently are
willing to refund payments after eBay's Resolution Center steps
in, but
in the meantime purchasers have wasted an entire month waiting for
their ferrite material-- which never will arrive. Until more
information and evidence is obtained on these shady practices,
> Ultralightdx members are warned to avoid all the Eastern European
ferrite sellers on eBay, at least until we can reasonably sort out
the
honest sellers from the scammers (probably within about a month).
In
the meantime, if you have had any negative experiences with these
eBay
sellers recently, please let us know. We will collect all the
evidence,
and do our best to protect everyone.

Hi Jerry/Brian/Alex,
Thanks for your ferrite-buying report. Perhaps if one orders only small
amounts of Russian ferrite, then it's no problem receiving it.
The problem is you can't make much of a FSL with only 10 rods, you need many
more than that for a continuous ring of ferrite on a decent-sized form; you
might try widely spacing them out around a larger form. We don't have a lot
of experience comparing performance of spaced rods to a continuous ring of
ferrite--Gary has done that with his Amidon rods.
Same for the Canadian rods, you need a lot more than just 12, though being
much fatter helps for spacing them around a form. I've tried one of the
Canadian rods; it has approximately 800 mu (the Russian ferrite is all 400
mu). I would not recommend mixing the Russian and Canadian ferrite, though
I'm sure it would work for a FSL; I don't know what the overall performance
of two very different ferrite permeability would do.

Here is my consumer awareness report on my experiences buying ferrite on
ebay:

On March 20th 2011 I ordered ferrite from two sellers on e-bay. The first
order was for (10) 200mm ferrite rods from a seller in the Ukraine and the
other was for (12) 200mm ferrite rods from a Canadian seller.

The Canadian order cost me $54.01 USD shipped while the Ukrainian order
set me back $32.00 USD.

I don't have the exact date in front of me, but the Canadian order arrived
about twelve business days later. It was very well packaged and the
ferrite was neatly sealed exactly as the listing promised.

The order from the Ukraine arrived today. About twenty-three days later.
The ferrite rods from this seller were not as nicely packaged, although
they were packed well enough to protect from damage.

Both ferrite rods are 200mm. The Canadian ones are 15.9mm diameter and the
Ukranian ones are about 8mm.

Both sellers delivered what they said they would. The Canadian shipment
got here much faster, as I expected. I thought the other would get here a
little sooner than it did, but I wasn't surprised or disappointed that it
took the time that it did.

I'm not sure if it's against E-Bay policies for me to give the names of
the sellers on this message board, but if you would like to know them you
could PM.

The 1125 Libyan outlet had been posted as operational on various sites recently with all the updates on radio in Libya and we were fortunate to finally hear that one last night.

I'm not sure if it's against E-Bay policies for me to give the names of the sellers on this message board, but if you would like to know them you could PM.

What a night!
After hearing very strong KT form New Zealand, I've started looking for other ZL beacons.
Then totally unexpectedly bumped into BA-361 from Vanuatu!
It was coming loud and clear, an easy copy.
HK-310 was another nice surprise. Obviously the band was open to East/North east.
Finally, the third new one was semi-local CB-263.

WX: It is really getting cold now, the temperature was just 15C
so my outdoor activity is limited to 30 minutes per night.
Plenty of signals, low QRN and almost no noise.

Newfoundland Ultralight Radio Trans-Atlantics & Domestics Report Apr 11-12

Allen Willie

Hello to All,

Trans-Atlantic propagation was once again decent last evening. There was however a noticeable decline probably due to the higher K Solar Index number at 2 and 3 compared to a lower number earlier in the week . Still, there were many signals at local sounding quality. Two new stations were added to the ULR Log. The 1125 Libyan outlet had been posted as operational on various sites recently with all the updates on radio in Libya and we were fortunate to finally hear that one last night.

Re: Large-Scale FSL Experimentation Tripped Up by Soviet Surplus Scammers on eBay

Gary DeBock

Hello Gregory,

Steve and Kevin have both done more large-scale FSL experimentation
than me, but my own favorite as an inner core is the 4" diameter floatation aid for kids in a swimming pool.

So far I've had little time to test,
initial results were not favorable, perhaps I got some cheap Ferrite
substitute?

Cheers,

Gregory

Hello All,

bars
at low rates from the Eastern European sellers (on eBay) may
discover
that the experience is like playing financial Russian Roulette. The
sudden, heavy demand for these ferrite bars and rods has apparently
turned some of the sellers into scammers-- even some with 100% (or
99%)
eBay feedback ratings..

>

Re: Ferrite rod order.

Gary DeBock

Hello John,

Thanks for sharing your experience with this eBay seller, who happens
to be one of the ones that we have found to have questionable behavior
recently (despite his 100% feedback). One of us had to request a refund
from him after 30 days (with no package arriving), causing this seller
to claim that the package was "accidentally returned" to him.

I would strongly suggest that you immediately request a refund (through
the eBay Resolution Center, if necessary) if you order has gone past 30
days without receipt of your ferrite. We have learned the hard way not
to trust this seller.

Ferrite for FSLs comments

Steve Ratzlaff <steveratz@...>

As far as I know there has been no problem with any of the Russian ferrite--bars or rods, nor with any type of rods from other sources. The only ferrite that Kevin and I have found that sometimes isn't as good is non-bar and non-rod ferrite. We've both bought some ribbon cable EMI ferrite that has turned out to be poor compared to rods and bars. Some of it has been good and some of it hasn't. So unless you're willing to test ribbon cable ferrite against bars or rods, I suggest sticking to bars and rods.
I would not put FSL experimentation on hold if you can obtain ferrite bars or rods.
I also bought a large quantity of the 100 x 20 x 3 bars--apparently I was lucky to order soon enough that it was in stock--it has always worked very well for FSL usage. I highly doubt that any bars are poor ferrite just as I highly doubt that any rods are poor ferrite.
Graham Maynard uses the Chinese ferrite rods from the UK source--that's good ferrite too.
From my tests with the Helmholtz FSL test setup, I've found that you need 1/4" to 3/8" insulation between ferrite and coil--be sure to build your FSL with that spacing. Litz of any type has been shown to be far superior to non-Litz of any type. Use Litz as a first choice; use the highest-strand Litz that you can afford. Use non-Litz only as a last resort, is what I recommend based on my tests. The FSL will certainly work but it won't have as high an output as when Litz is used. Same for number of strands for Litz--use the highest-strand you can afford, but the FSL will still work even if you use a lower-strand type (and it will work better than non-Litz). And with Litz you don't need to space the turns; Litz should be wound close-spaced.
Again, if you already have bars or rods, do not put off experimenting with FSL construction--it is very unlikely your bars or rods are defective.
If at all possible, acquire an LCR or LC meter so you can measure the inductance of your coil (and confirm your capacitor is what you think it is). The cheapest one I've found that works well is the DM4070, available in USA for under $40, on eBay. Without knowing the inductance of your coil, you're just guessing and it will likely be very frustrating trying to figure out where the FSL will tune with a given capacitor.

Steve

The proven quality and specification of ferrite rods is evidently a crucial issue,
as referenced by Kevin and Fritz. I think we should focus on this just as
much as on FSL design. I have put my experiment intentions on the back-burner -
bzw. auf die lange Bank geschoben - until we have more data on these issues.

RE:
HI!,Just joined the group.. very impressive loggings, what kind of ultralight radio do you use, and what would you suggest???

Hello Neil,

Welcome to our group of Ultralight Radio enthusiasts. You will find a vast amount of information on our Ultralight Radio group site files area regarding all aspects of Ultralight Radio Dxing, including the many different types of Ultralight radios available commercially and all their pertinent information on selectivity, sensitivity and performance. We are certain that with all this information available it will help you in deciding your choice of Ultralight Radios for Dxing.

Personally Dianne & I have had very good luck with our Sony SRF-M37V and SRF-39FP (Nicknamed the Prison Radio). Of course our location here in Newfoundland and especially the recent move to an oceanside residence has been a definite added bonus in what we are able to hear.

The Ultralight group of Dxers is a great group of individuals, some of who have been involved in radio Dxing for many years and offer a wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to all aspects of radio and Dxing.

We hope you enjoy the Ultralight Radio Craze. Some of the very knowledgeable moderators of the group will undoubtedly add their welcome and detailed expertise and answer any questions you may have.

Another inpressive list and congratulations on Bermuda.

I was impressed on you separating the UK stations on 1566KHz. Both are 'Grey Line' enhanced stations here.

Pulse 2 is a great catch too, it may only be 740 watts but it does have a good antenna location in the Pennines, giving good ground wave propagation in the UK ..... and obviously transatlantic skip too !
