I love it--not a URL but otherwise just like the 380 feature-wise but with a considerably longer and more sensitive ferrite bar antenna

hi Gary!
i like the 4 kHz filter; offset-tuned by 3 kHz. yes, a slow-AGC is a big help. i agree, the DSP filters are nice. i use my PL-390 as a spotter. i am pretty hooked on designing single tube/transistor radios. regards, phil

What I meant to say is that the S/N meter doesn't work when offset tuned. The RSSI meter still works in this case. I tried using offset tuning with my PL-380 last night on SW. For me, the best combination is the 2 kHz filter with a 1 kHz offset. This provides very intelligible audio, and seems to reduce fading distortion a bit. I guess in theory a 2 kHz offset should be better, but it makes the sound too shrill, especially on fades. A 1.5 kHz filter with a 1.5 kHz offset might be ideal, but this is not possible with a stock radio. A slower AGC would help quite a bit for fading distortion and pumping, but I'm not aware of any small radios that offer selectable AGC speeds. A nice feature of the DSP filters is that they seem to be perfectly symmetrical. This is usually not the case with physical filters, unless they are very expensive. Regards, Gary

Hello to All,
Propagation from Europe last night was predominately Spanish stations as per logs below. 1 new station was added to the ULR log as BBC Ulster 1341 was either off air for a period of time or it's signal wasn't making it through which would be surprising as it is rock steady here most evenings. A few Middle East stations with big signals however a lot of usual signals from Iran, Syria etc were not making it through , likely due to the high Solar K index at 4 and 5 1107-SPAIN-R. you're very welcome. yes, they are similar. and the ergonomics beat the DE1103. the problem with some radios is the quality control. i was going to get a D96L. but Kchibo seems to lack US sellers.

I don't have hands-on experience with either of those two radios, although I have heard good things about the Grundig. However, I expect you may find WBAP 820 a tough "catch" from Richmond on any radio, barring unusual propagation events, such as magnetic storms, or other stations on 820 being offline for maintenance. Your best bet for hearing stations to the west of you will be to listen around your local sunrise. Good luck! Sincerely, Keith Beesley Seattle, WA

I just bought a Grundig G4000A AM/FM/SW Radio - http://amzn.to/jPWQrK for $70. I read many reviews and it seemed to be the best radio in my price range that picked up lots of AM stations which is my main interest. One review that said the 4000a *is* the Grundig Yachtboy YB400 and it looks exactly like the Yachtboy. It has good quality sound and picks up a decent amount of stations, but I can't get 820 Dallas which is 50,000 watts. I'm in Richmond, Va. so I don't know how that affects reception, there are some big mountains in West Virginia and western Virginia. Then I read the 2009 shootout here (fantastic reviews) and the Tecsun R9012 is rated #1 and AM reception is said to be excellent. I don't know the audio quality of the R9012 speaker. My question is do you all think the R9012 is comparable or better than the Grundig 4000a? Also how is the audio quality of the R9012? I appreciate all comments! Keith Richmond, Va.

I especially enjoyed your article "Si4734 Offset Tuning." I'm going to give these techniques a try on my PL-380. It's too bad the signal meter isn't functional when doing offset tuning. I find that offset tuning is often necessary on my PL-380 to minimize internal-generated hets on MW AM, but I haven't tried it for reduction of selective fading distortion (on MW or SW) yet. Are you referring to the Ferrite Sleeve antenna, or just a regular ferrite loop? I've fiddled with both and although I haven't managed to construct an FSL to some of the specs that other members have, I have put together a few different ferrite antennas for MW and LW with the 18" ferrite rods from Stormwise.com and I love them. -Brian Berkley Michigan

Hello to All
Decent propagation last evening considering the higher solar K index reading at 3. Once again some strong signals at near local levels through the later evening. A few more domestics were added to our Bristol's Hope ULR log and we have updated our personal ULR overall totals on our Newfoundland Ultralight Dxer's Website as of yesterday. http://nldxers.110mb.com Also added is new photo of our residence taken from the beach here in Bristol's Hope. Thanks for the great article! (2011 Buying Guide) Do you find that the older Grundig G5/Eton E5 pretty much performs the same as the DE1103? I still have my G5, and was wondering where it fits in your tests. Also, have you ever tried out a KCHIBO D96L ? Thanks!

I Needed Another Radio Like a Hole in the Head...
John Cereghin <jcereghin@...>
They say that we preachers collect Bibles (I have probably 30 of them)
and DXers collect radios. UL DXers collect UL radios... For Father's Day, I bought myself a Grundig G-8 at Radio Shack. My PL-300WT (Tecsun's version of the G-8) is probably the best ULR for FM DX so you can't have too many during this time of the year. I like the G-8 because of its rubberized finish, which is better than the metal finish of its cousin, the PL-300WT. I hope I get to put it through its paces during the next Es event... The only question is if my wife is going to let me play with it yet, or if I have to wait until Father's Day! I use efficient speakers on my DSP radios. Most will drive one [old] Avery Fisher book shelf speaker across the R+L channels for mono. The CR-1100 will drive a pair of them for stereo, or an 8 inch Altec, EV or Bogen speaker PA/Music speaker. The CR-1100 has a stereo line output for matching an amp too. - FARMERIK
