WDHP heard this AM in CT

ferrite61 <dxrx@...>

I was tuning the PL-210 around in the X-Band this morning just after midnight. Nice reception of modern dance-mix/young adult rythmic on 1620. Heard many mentions of "the New 93" (presumed FM).This signal was quite good and strong with best reception NNW/SSE. Though it faded occasionally, the RX was heard for 3 hours. I got two ID's at 0203 EDT and 0255EDT, as "1620 WDHP" and "WDHP". A look-up on FM for the USVI does indicate a recent (2010) public radio licsense for 93.3 MHz.

After the first ID, I put the PL-200 on it, and RX was indeed quite good, especially outdoors 20 feet from the house (the signal was first heard, and ID'd indoors).

WDHP has never been heard here before, and I though entered as night-power, the clarity and strength seem to indicate 10kW daytime.

New England/NY/NJ listeners might want to try for this tonight after 9-10PM EDT.

1620 WDHP Frederiksted, USVI 10kW/1kW 2749km (1708 mi) good signal occ. fade 0203 and 0255 EDT ID. Parallel to 93.3 FM w/ID. SINPO 43343.5 using Tecsun PL210 then PL-200. Barefoot ID also noted. WDHP is station #507 ranked 9th by distance and 5th by scoring method.

Hello To All,

With the sharp rise in the Solar Flux number , propagation conditions have been outstanding here in the Hope lately. We had thought that we would be in for a treat at this new remote location when it comes to the DX possibilities come the fall season . It has definitely lived up to those expectations and more as per the logs below heard over the past few days.

On the Brink- another new ULR Log

John Cereghin <jcereghin@...>

Got a surprise new log yesterday morning to bring my ULR total now to
798 stations:

1200 WNBL, Huntington WV, 0630, “Your better life station” and
“America’s Greatest Music, WNBL” logged on the DT200VX. They are
listed with a Southern Gospel format but they faded before I could
hear any music.

A 373- mile catch. That's 4 new stations so far this week (including
the 3 New Jersey TIS stations I've logged), so only two stations to go
to 800!

Chinese pocket radio suffering from overload and poor selectivity? - a solution

Peter 1956

Hello all,

Despite being warned off, I happened to find a Kchibo KK-S60L radio

in a local electronic store here in Shenzhen at a very reasonable

price (235RMB). My first reaction after using it on the balcony the

first time was to drop it over the edge! With a bit of

experimenting, I managed to get the best out of it on FM. Ironically

I bought it for MW, as it is supposed to be very good on MW,

but mine isn't! Mine appears to be the "old version", with reduced

frequency coverage and the buttons in a different order.

The video is available here:

2nd T/A station with PL-380

patrice.privat

Hiya

My Tecsun PL-380 experienced a second T/A station this morning before sunrise.
1521 khz being vacant on 360 degrees round, WWKB-1520 managed to get thru at peaks with a political show about Governor Perry.
I checked the Icom R-75 with active loop a few minutes later and WWKB was indeed the sole NorthAm station to offer comfortable listening.
When the signal receded, it was replaced by a heterodyne.
WWZN-1510 Boston also appeared but weaker.
I tried Rebelde-1620 but there was a Flemish pirate, so I could not get thru.
Same with the Icom.
So the new absolut-barefoot record here with my ultra-light is 5286 km (Buffalo NY to Therdonne) !!
And it's station ULR #230 !!

2 other stations appeared to benefit from the absence of Orfordness on 648 khz :

*an unidentified Slavic playing songs (Wham) that could be from Slovenia but, alas, no ID.
*RNE1 Badajoz, the only spaniard on 648. #231
*Finally RTA Ouled Fayed ALG with Qu'ranic prayer #232 obtained by nulling the Germans.

TECH: dual LF -61 rod and coil vs. single LF -33 rod and coil daytime beacons

Steve Ratzlaff <steveratz@...>

I think this completes all the possible variations for the dual coil (parallel, MW; series LF) that I've tested. Today I tested the dual coil (on the -61 rod) in series for an LF coil against a "Gary" LF coil on the -33 rod. Remember the dual coils use 40/44 Litz on the -61 rod; the Gary coil uses 122 turns of 100/44 Litz on the -33 rod. (Note this coil measured 1570 uH on the DM4070 meter, somewhat short of the desired 1700 uH.) The two PL-380's were used, as before. I tried to hear as many daytime beacons as I could, noting the display signal strength/RSSI plus a subjective assessment of the quality.
The dual coil in series for LF has met its match and come up wanting. This is not very surprising--the much smaller 40/44 Litz and the -61 rod are not optimum for LF reception compared to the much larger 100/44 Litz and much higher permeability -33 rod. If you want the greatest LF sensitivity, go with the LF rod and coil. However the dual coil and rod really wasn't that far behind on the signals it could hear, it just couldn't hear the weakest signals that the dedicated LF rod and coil could (barely) hear.
I listened outside in the driveway next to the house; there was a lot of AC noise, but both radios had the same noise so the relative signals at the loopsticks were the same.

296 LGD (my local beacon at 20 miles)
single coil 43/25 strong dual coil 45/25 a little stronger than single

305 ONO (119 miles)
single coil 15/03 dual coil 17/04 better signal here too

331 PS (71 miles)
single coil 15/03 poor/weak dual coil15/01-02 very poor

408 MW (121 miles)
single coil 18/08 weak dual coil 16/04 poor

371 YK (132 miles)
single coil 15/01 very poor dual coil (not heard)

Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-23

Gary DeBock

Hello All,

It was another mediocre morning for Longwave TP's, but several Asian
mainland stations had very good MW signals, especially 936-Anhui in
China (with its best audio of the new season). 738-BEL2 (Taiwan) was
received with a fairly strong buzzing carrier, but with undermodulated
audio, and throbbing hum on the signal. Last year's transmitter issues
seem to have made a return appearance. At least here in Puyallup, the
Chinese and Korean stations had the edge over the Japanese "big guns"
this morning.

Re: TECH: MW dual coil ferrite rod tests, contra vs. non-contra

Everett N4CY

Steve,

This is very good information and very timely, as I am going to wind my FSL today, the Litz wire came in last evening. I will try to duplicate your inductance values, so with the 381 -20 pf varcap that I have, it should get 198-863 KHz @ 1700uH (coils in series) and 397-1736 KHz @ 420uH (coils in parallel). I just hope that I have enough wire, as I only ordered 120' of the Litz 660/46 wire. I will also wind the coils in contra direction.

So now I have to work out how to change the coils form parallel to series and utilize the 381-20 pf varcap.

slight edge to the non-contra over the whole range.

1610 kHz 23/24 22/23

(Last night on 1700 kHz with the California sports station, both were
reading 52/25 on peaks.)

Both coils were 50 turns 40/44 Litz with a small spacing between them, with
the coils near the center of the rod. The DM4070 LCR meter was used to set
each coil close to 580 uH than taped in place on the rod. With both coils in
parallel, that gives about 420 uH; in series, about 1700 uH. The coils were
used in parallel for the MW check. As noted before, use of dual coils seems
to give somewhat better sensitivity for weak signals than a single coil.

I was thinking the same thing,.... on an upper deck, as far to the bow or stern as I can get to try and avoid some of the RF noise… Thanks for the tips!!

I have been on 3 Cruises...and took ULRs along on each one!!! The ship is pretty Noisy electrically....but when you are in Port...you will find it somewhat less noisy. I have found that FM suffers much less than does AM BCB which can be quite noisy. The secret is to get OUTSIDE and as far away as possible from the inner workings of the ship. Usually the TOP DECK at the far ends of the ship are best. I did quite a bit of DXing from our Balcony attached to our room...and that was a LOT better than inside the room. On one Caribbean Cruise I used a Tecsun PL-310 for FM and found that when I leaned the Whip Antenna against the Metal Railing on the balcony..it enhanced the Signal Strength of the FM Stations.

The hardest part of DXing on the Cruise Ships....was trying to STAY AWAKE after the Long Fun Filled Days on the ship!! Staying out of the casino onboard will also help your DXing!!! AHHAHHHA....

I always get onboard with Great Hopes of hearing amazing DX while on the cruise...then find myself hardly turning on the Radio!! But that is OK too.....since our Primary Reason for being on the ship is not to DX!!!

Have FUN on your cruise...and good DX.......

Sony SRF-S86 ===audiophile upgrades

Joseph Fan

All,

Just got around to opening up my Sony SRF-S86 to upgrade two output caps and one power cap as noted by Xin and wanted to note a few items:

1. The SRF-S86 FM band runs 76-108 and might be a current 2011 Japan exclusive model

2. The SRF-S86 board has been slightly reworked (or just reprinted) compared to the SRF-S83 Xin documented

2.a. a few apparently minor changes (different white printed numbers on the board and a tweak to at least the transparent cover of the large "tuning box")

2.b. the white printed circles around the one 220uf cap and three 100uf caps are now the same size as their respective caps:

==> not so obvious that these should be upgraded to 330uf and 220uf, respectively

==> given the SRF-S86 still has the lousy bass boost switch and board looks essentially similar, I still bet the output caps should be upgraded. The power cap upgrade is a no-brainer

2.c. Just below the 220uf cap, sits a small cap seems to have been downgraded in the SRF-S86 to a 22uf cap
==>what is the purpose of this cap?
==>what was it previously rated at?

It is pretty sensitive, which means it will hear radio frequency electrical noise well too. Can you try it out away from buildings? - FARMERIK

TECH: MW dual coil ferrite rod tests, contra vs. non-contra

Steve Ratzlaff <steveratz@...>

I tested a dual coil contra-wound compared with a dual coil non-contra wound MW ferrite rod setup, using two Amidon -61 7.5" rods and two PL-380's today just before noon. Results show both are about identical with perhaps a slight edge to the non-contra over the whole range.

non-contra contra
610 kHz 45/25 43/25 (signal strength/RSSI)
810 kHz 32/25 31/25
1060 kHz 30/25 29/23
1080 kHz 17/06 15/05
1250 kHz 30/25 30/25
1360 kHz 24/21 24/20
1400 kHz 22/18 20/16
1420 kHz 36/25 34/25
1430 kHz 22/03 19/02
1510 kHz 25/24 25/23
1610 kHz 23/24 22/23

(Last night on 1700 kHz with the California sports station, both were reading 52/25 on peaks.)

Both coils were 50 turns 40/44 Litz with a small spacing between them, with the coils near the center of the rod. The DM4070 LCR meter was used to set each coil close to 580 uH than taped in place on the rod. With both coils in parallel, that gives about 420 uH; in series, about 1700 uH. The coils were used in parallel for the MW check. As noted before, use of dual coils seems to give somewhat better sensitivity for weak signals than a single coil.
