Re: Conditions to the South

Barry M Gelb

Hi all,

In my experience, auroral conditions usually seem to block out signals from the north, thus opening up many southern dx possibilities. It can be almost like the old days when the 50kw locals would shut down on Sunday nights and the band would open up to everything else.

One evening several years ago I was driving on a local expressway (Queens, NY) and on 600 and 640, Radio Rebelde and Radio Progresso both came in literally like locals in the car; my wife thought someone got a tx on the air and was joking around, but I assured her we were actaully hearing Cuban stations. Sure enough when I got home, I saw on the news that an aurora was expected to be visible late that night.

In my own experience I have noticed that just hours prior to an eminent solar flare occurence and then during the time shortly after an event is subsiding, conditions can really seem to stir up a good number of stations that are not normally heard in your area. Over the years as these flares have occured I have noted this with good consistency time after time.

In recent hours we have had yet another solar disturbance and it's eventual wind down following

These times mentioned have seemed to yield some surprising and unusual results for me over the years here in Newfoundland as well as Alberta when I lived there .

Is there anything to this or a coincidence ?. Not sure but it seems to have provided some unusual entries for my logbook in the past as well as Rob Ross's success last night and early this morning

Congrats Rob on the new catches !

I noticed this chip on the Silicon Labs website. It seems like the 4831/35 with a digital display out. SW goes to 28.5 Mhz according to the page here:

http://www.silabs.com/products/audiovideo/amfmreceivers/Pages/Si4840-44.aspx

Mouser has a DEMO board available for only $37.50 here:

http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Silicon-Labs/Si4844-DEMO/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMs9wGPJdBNGYrOHrcHKalk9

Looks interesting. I'm envisioning a radio like the Degen DE205 or the Tecsun DR-920 with DSP performance. I'm tempted to order one of the DEMO boards.

Thanks Michael,

The demise of the Heathkit company was a pretty big shock to me, as I
had built almost all of their recent Amateur radio transceivers
(SB-104A, HW-8, HW-9, etc.), plus about 10 other kits.

After they folded up, my idea of fun was to buy cheap, dead Heathkits
on eBay that were listed as "guaranteed DOA," then repair them to full
operation (our garage is full of them, much to the dismay of my XYL).
What better way to become a sharp repair technician? :-) As you might
guess, my eBay user ID is "Heathkid."

Compared to those photos, the DE 321 has wider coverage SW meter bands shown on the dial.

I got to try the DE321 out for awhile. It seems to lock onto one station at a time. I never could start to hear the next station while tuning from the previous one. In fact it skips in between stations quite often as band conditions change. At one point, it tuned AM 740 from Toronto and the next station heard was WJR on 760. No sign of 750 at all. It is pretty directional, rotating the radio so the ferrite points 30 degrees to either side is enough to hear a difference, mostly in more or less back round noise. I did not find an example of hearing different stations on the same frequency by rotating the radio. When tuning from one station to the next, the volume has to be adjusted manually to have how loud the radio sounds be the same. That is nice because you can immediately tell which is a weak station and more likely worth waiting for a station identification. Overall it got a good number of stations, and each one sounded pretty good. It did NOT have whines, whistles or noises. There was some static
when stations were aways apart, but that did not happen much here in CT. AM BCB is pretty crowded here on a good radio at night. I tried adding the TERK loop antenna. It liked it much better along the end of the radio rather than broadside. Tuning the TERK I could find the missing stations like 750, and if the tuning on the radio was just right, I could choose back and forth between two adjacent stations just by tuning the TERK, without adjusting the radio. With out the TERK, the radio reminded me of tuning an FM radio with a strong AFC engaged. With the TERK you can fine tune the stations in between, but it does not cause a big improvement in stations the radio tunes without it.

I would say I will have to get used to how this radio behaves to get the most out of this radio for DXing. For ordinary listening it is a pleasure. With a modest antenna like the TERK, it does quite well. I really like how clear the audio is, even on weak distant stations. The tuning knob is a little stiff. It is smaller in all 3 dimensions than my PL-310, and barefoot will not hear as many stations.

Maybe someone will program this chip for narrower selectivity, and it won't skip over stations.

For the price I am VERY happy with it. SW bands seem to have many stations and so does FM BCB. Not much on the low FM band here from 64-87MHz. - FARMERIK

Now that I look at this site I'm not sure.

These photos clearly show a variable capacitor, and I thought the
Si4831 chip used a variable resistor for tuning. Strange.

I just received a DE321 and have played with it on AM and FM for a while.
While it is an ultralight I personally don't think it qualifies for DX.
Sensitivity is mediocre using the built-in antennas. For instance, on MW
low it almost completely misses the TIS station at 590, and received only
2 out of the perhaps 5 audible stations in the expanded MW band. The
phenomenon of jumping from one station to the next also takes some getting
used to; it reminds me of the old "FM AFC" feature on older radios in
which it was impossible to tune "between" stations ... hey, that's what
DXing is all about.

On the plus side, it is small, has decent clear audio, and is totally
resistant to overload and intermod that plages sets costing 10 times as
much (or more) here in RF Alley, New Jersey. The earlier prediction about
performance based on its ultra low cost are probably spot on. It's a neat
little carry-around for listening to local stations but belongs on the
"turkey farm" for DX.

Hoping the Tecsun 2010 performs better.

ULR DX...LONGWAVE...1 New Beacon so far tonight......

Hi Guys:

Well...it's a cold, dark, windy, rainy night here this evening. (Sounds like the lead-in to a good Horror Movie eh???) I had to resort to DXing out on the front porch tonight....where I have a roof over head to shield me from the rain. It's a little noisier out front than out back..but it was raining just a little too hard to DX on the Back Deck!!

Not a whole lot doing so far tonight....but just as I was about to pack it in for now.....I heard a VERY FAINT Beacon trying to make it through on 410 Khz. It was an American Beacon with no DAID. I could tell it was only 2 Letters.....but I couldn't get it at first as it was too weak. After about 10 Minutes of Monitoring it finally rose up strong enough to get the ID for a New Log for both the Overall and ULR Logbooks!! Glad I hung in there!!

I'll try again later and see if things pick up a bit. Temp out there tonight was 47 Degrees F..but very windy and wet...so it feels like 37 F!! Another 37 Degrees less..and the GOOD STUFF should start coming in!!

Litz wire – check
Variable capacitor – check
Ferrite rods – somewhere on a slow train between Siberia and California

On a weekend trip to California's Central Coast (Cambria, just North of San Luis Obispo, on the coast) I added a few more MW's to my log. I tried LW with no success…. Nothing heard at all on the stock PL380. I know it is reported to be hard of hearing on LW with the stock antenna, but not even the Morrow Bay NDB 20 miles away was heard. However, I did hear very clearly the Camp Roberts NDB (RWE) on 526khz 22 miles away and one other MW NDB (still need to look that oen up in my notes to see where/how far).

Hi Gang,

Once again conditions favored stations to the north and west around SR here this morning. Logged this new sta on the T-615 w/ SAT.

1150, WHBY, Kimberly, WI, 1143-1148 UTC, 10/24/11, only hrd for a few minutes with all tlk. I was lucky they ID'd shortly after tuning in, "...brought to you by WHBY..." The "pest" sta KSAL, Salina, KS, had mercy on me as they faded down to a very weak lvl during this time. They're usually walking tall here. The WI station peaked at a fair lvl but rapidly faded back down into the garbled mess on this channel. This is the first new sta I've hrd on this freq in 2 1/2 years. ULR Sta #820-

99 gy stations received on any radio is outstanding! Let alone on an ULR.

Using barefoot ULR's, I have had no luck with gy stations, as they all seem to run together.

Apparently, I need to spend more time on them. I have heard THREE gy stations (embarrassed! awkward!)

Thanks Dave!! Frank Welch in Massachusetts has already gone over 100 ULR Graveyarders...so he is the Champ at the moment!! HAHHAHA. It has taken me almost 4 years to hit 99.....and many HOURS of listening to get there!! You're right...most of the time the GY Channels are just a Jumble of Stations.....but they do rise up out of the ashes from time to time.....sometimes at amazing levels!! If you're there when they do...you Log a New One!! I have heard a Total of 136 Graveyarders using many Radios over the years. It has taken about 35 Years to hear the 136 Total...so yes..the 99 by Ultralight in only 4 Years is pretty good!! But like I said....MANY HOURS were spent listening to NOTHING to hear these 99 Stations!!
