Thomas, I was there with a couple of ultralights this past weekend. Downtown Vancouver has a ton of RFI. If you plan to DX there, go to Stanley Park, Kitsilano Park (good locations), or somewhere a little outside the city proper. I found the background noise to be nearly absent in Kits Park, many Seattle AMs were clearly audible during daylight hours at 120 miles. Regards, Keith Beesley Seattle, WA USA

Ultralight Longwave Firsts and Records Lists
Hello All,
Thanks again to Allen for updating the ULR Firsts and Records lists, which are now posted in both the Ultralightdx and DXer.Ca file systems. As many of you are aware, because of extensive Longwave antenna experimentation last winter by many in our group, the Tecsun DSP Ultralights suddenly became quite competitive in Longwave DXing (both for Longwave Broadcast, and NDB's). North American ULR-DXers like Richard Allen and Rob Ross suddenly began receiving multiple Longwave TA's from Europe and Africa, and here on the west coast Mongolia was recently received as a new Longwave TP. The new DX season should provide many more such opportunities, for those willing to give Longwave transoceanic DXing a try. Also last winter the new Longwave-capable Tecsun models became reasonably sensitive for NDB reception, starting an Ultralight beacon-chasing craze which has spread even among the traditional NDBlist Yahoo group. Ultralight radio beacon chasing provides a new challenge for those with NDB-DXing experience, making them depend upon their propagation knowledge and DXing skill for success, rather than on the latest in communications receiver technology. Ultralight NDB-DXing has already provided a lot of thrills for its participants, including the new Longwave DX countries of Samoa and Norfolk Island from here on the west coast of North America, as well as the current Ultralight Longwave DXing distance record (6,795 miles). The Ultralight Longwave DXing groups are just getting started, but we would certainly like to welcome our European, South African, Australian, New Zealand and South American DXers to jump into the Longwave DXing fun, and participate in the new Longwave Awards program. Patrick Vignoud of France has already received a Longwave DXing Award for 15 DXCC countries received in Ultralight NDB-DXing, and many such opportunities exist for European Ultralight DXers to receive multiple DXCC countries in Longwave Broadcast DXing. If you have interest in either of these new Ultralight Longwave DXing niche groups we would encourage you to express your opinions about the type of awards you would like to see, and keep accurate records of the Longwave DX that you receive on your Ultralight radios. If you would like to volunteer as a Longwave DX records keeper for our Ultralight Radio enthusiast group, that would also be greatly appreciated. Such a volunteer would create and maintain Ultralight Longwave Firsts and Records files, similar to the excellent Medium Wave DXing lists maintained (and recently updated) by Allen Willie. For an active Longwave DXer, such a volunteer duty would be a excellent opportunity to keep track of the latest accomplishments in Ultralight Longwave DXing, and give helpful support to our fast-growing LWBC and NDB-DXing niche groups. Thanks are aso in order for those LW antenna experimenters who have helped our Ultralight Longwave DXing niche groups get started, and become another thrilling option for pocket radio DXing in the future. For all of you who have pushed the limits in Longwave antenna experimentation, the ultimate fanatic salutes you! 73 and Good DX, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA)

Good Day All,
Tnx very much to Richard Allen's recent tip, I bagged one more new XE this morning on the T-615 w/ SAT. Tnx, Richard! 790, XENT, La Paz, BCS, 1200-1125UTC, 10/11,11, tuned in to the XE NA at the TOH followed by tlk by a W ancr. She made mentions of "en Satelite" several times. "Satelite" is one of the IDs that have been reported from this station. Numerous mentions of "Grupo Formula" were hrd as well. Minimal QRM during the peak around 1210 UTC. Don't confuse this one w/ XEGAC in Jalisco which was hrd here recently also w/ Grupo Formula IDs. Sta #815, LAm # 175- After a hard night's work, a good breakfast, and some good DX, the sand-man is beating me down, so I bid good DX to everyone and best of 73 from northern Oklahoma. hmmm, I hope there is some form of whip/ferrite isolation. Seems that an FM frewuency bead should be placed from the hot side of the AM ferrite to the whip ant. input. maybe 2000 ohms at 100 MHz. (laughs, the bead is prolly needed for SW rather than AM)

It is my understanding that Degen has thier own "DSP" chip, it is not the Silicon Labs one. Tecsun apparently does have license to and uses the real SiliconLabs DSP chips. However, Kchibo has some high ends that do have the real Silicone Labs chip, and most mid-price and low-price Kchibo's use the Chinese "silicone chip" as Degen does. It can get confusing. Before you buy, it would be wise to query the seller on ebay. Steve

ferrite61 <dxrx@...>
Unfortuneately, the Tecsun is not considered an ultralight, because the cubic volume exceeds 20 cubic inches. Size does matter in considering an ultralight. Howeveer, you may refer to it, as a performance check of an acceptable ultralight. The PL-600 might compare as a little better or worse than an ultralight.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
For example, I have an Grundig G5 purchased used for under $100, but its too big, and has SSB that disqualified it from being an ultralight. When it comes to "beacon-hunting" I often compare the G5 against the acceptable Tecsun PL-210. (Its a total mis-match, the G5 is way better than the PL-210.) Paul S. in CT

Installation of automatic botnet detection software
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
is advisable. Many sites are piggybacked by invisible botnet installers. Downloading a file can give the bad boys access to your PC, which will then be used to disseminate malware, unbeknown to you, and at the same time selling on your IP and/or email address to bulk malware vendors. Botnet detection software will alert you and and enable you to delete the hidden file which would otherwise include you in a botnet. Each one will use some of your resources and may not otherwise inconvenience you, but it will lead to thousands of other PCs being affected and possibly infected. Do not underestimate the botnet threat. The .ru file referred to is being used to install botnet file on PCs which are not sufficiently well protected, but it is easily removed. Not all are so easily deleted. The jpgs linked to below appear safe. Michael UK
