Rockwork 2 Portable DU's for 10-18-- Yikes!
The ionosphere delivered a meltdown DU session yesterday morning with several stations exceeding their best-ever audio, even in the summer Rockwork 4 DXpeditions. 531-2PM and 1017-Newstalk ZB were two such stations, although there were probably many more that couldn't be tracked down with live DXing. The DU's were pounding in even on the Asian side of the cliff at my 1330 start time, and all three FSL's were carried over to the DU side (in between the "squatters," who had been there all night long). 531-2PM's SRN talk was freakishly loud at 1410, continuing for a full half hour. 558-Fiji made a modest appearance (with ID) at 1423, while 1017-Tonga was as meltdown level for most of the session, only to be replaced by Newstalk ZB at 1430, also at a meltdown level.
Chasing DU's in October wasn't exactly part of the DXpedition master plan, but signals like this definitely get your attention, regardless of your preferences. Wild and wacky! 531 2PM Kempsey, Australia SRN call-in talk freakishly loud at 1407; best signal ever at Rockwork https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/3mwuaps37vs259pb5y252h0p4vkg5hx0 558 Radio Fiji One Suva, Fiji Island music and native language ID ("Radio Fiji One, na domoiviti") at 14 seconds into this recording at 1433 https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/gn8jb515wgknndp02w8i5lnl1yocxyl2 Island music at 1422 https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/xpjy3f6uicf0fufet8lz6ae29x530o6t 1017 A3Z Nuku'alofa, Tonga Female speech at blaster level at 1421; same signal for much of sunrise enhancement https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/nhvk33rtitpty93y84m2rhk5kpbyn5y1 1017 Newstalk ZB Christchurch, NZ Call-in talk at another meltdown level at 1430; best signal ever at Rockwork https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/h04c6j8yzog9p9gortm3hld6niwmo4tw 73 and Good DX, Gary DeBock (DXing at the Rockwork 2 ocean cliff near Manzanita, OR, USA) 7.5 inch loopstick CC Skywaves and XHDATA D-808 portables + two 8 inch FSL antennas and one 5 inch FSL antenna (see photo)

Recorded in McGrath, Alaska with a CCrane Skywave & DeBock 5" FSL Antenna 936kHz IRIB Radio Azarbayjan Gharbi, Fesanduz, Iran on Sat Oct 16 at 1512UTC with woman talking, fair to weak signal.Match to stream! 300kw via 5460 mile transpolar path. Audio: http://bit.ly/Iran936Oct16_1521utc 1026kHz IRIB Radio Tabriz, Azarshahr, Iran on Sat. Oct 16th at 1458UTC with what sounds like a man talking on the phone. Fair signal. Match to stream 200kw via 5460 mile transpolar path. Audio: http://bit.ly/Iran1026Oct16_1458utc 1116kHz 4BH Brisbane, QLD, Aus Thu Oct 14 at 1459UTC with fair signal, oldies song into station top of hour id and female newsreader. not the best signal I've had from them by any means, but I've rarely caught a top of hour from many stations. 6.3kw night power at 6850 miles. Audio: http://bit.ly/Aus1116Oct14_1459utc 1314kHz Sky Racing Radio, Wollongong, NSW, Aus Thu Oct 14 at 1620UTC with live horse racing action. Signal and audio are poor and fade down a bit, but no mistaking what this is vs the other 1314 in Australia thats sports TALK. 5kw at 7344 miles. Audio: http://bit.ly/aus1314Oct14_1620utc 1386kHz Radio Baltic Waves International, Viesintos Lithuania on Mon Oct 18 at 1549UTC woman talking in a slavic language. I've heard them much bettr than this before. 75kw via 4239 miel transpolar path. Audio: http://bit.ly/3Lithuania1386Oct18_1549utc 1413khz Vesti FM, Grigoriopol, Moldova Sat Oct 16 at 1616UTC. Signal is pretty decent with a bit of a het from KLAM 1450 300 miles away but gets abundantly clear just a little over into the recording. I'm guessing at the rate at which the guy is talking and a few of the words I pick out, this is some kind of religious recitation/speech. 400kw via 5835 mile trans-polar path. Audio: http://bit.ly/Iran1449Oct16_1510utc 1485kHz NRK P1 Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway on Sat. Oct 16th at 1501UTC with man and woman talking in Norweigan followed by a song, "Runaway" from The Corrs. 1KW via 2325 mile transpolar path. Not a bad signal for what it is. Audio: http://bity.ly/Longyearbyen1485Oct16_1501utc 1512kHz IRIB Radio Ardabil, Ardabill Iran on Fri Oct 15 at 1611UTC with somewhat lively chat between two men. It was not the 1 megawatt Saudi and I was able to confirm that because the content I heard on 1512 matched the Iran webstream. 50kw via 5320 mile transpolar path. Audio: http://bit.ly/Iran1512Oct15_1611utc 1548kHz Radio Sawa via al Kuwayt, Kuwait on Fri Oct 15 at 1623UTC with what sounds like a promo announcement by a woman then a man begins talking. Alaska AM DX Mon. Oct. 18
Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Had a brief, good blip of Iran on 1449 Had a slightly longer but only "Decent" rise up of Iran on 1026. Had my first sighting of Radio Baltive Waves on 1386 Vesti FM on 1413 Moldova made a weaker then usual showing. 1386 Lithuania and 1413 Moldova can be very strong here. Iran is a transpolar path for me so if this stuff is showing up now, it only means good things for the rest of winter I think Paul

Got a new one, 711 4QW. Had 7LO, 774 again for the second time in a week. 1413 Moldova made a pithy showing No Iran today I have a feeling the real dx season has kicked in for me with a few days in the last week of transpolar reception.. it seems that stuff once it starts, its "on"... it doesnt disappear for long... Thanks for the trans Arctic reports, Paul.

It might be worth using my north Flag at sunrise here over the next few weeks to see what pops up. Normally, I use the west Flag in the mornings, but that's not so good for trans-Arctic signals. Nick
