With the index, does anybody keep a record of these or share them much? it is the first time I have heard of this at all. Would it connect up with an online service to share these?

I have recently been updating DB4ULRDXingV22 and I have now added this in. It uses this formula to provide the index.
[DISTANCE]/[POWER]*[SIGNAL]

As can be seen in the below, it shows an index score of 0.3104 for 3GG on 531kHz.

My parents did kick up a stink when I starting looking at getting something like this. After my latest school results, I was lucky to be allowed to throw up a basic VHF and UHF white vertical.

This could be another option for me. I might stick to my PL380 first and really learn all I can about that.

At first I thought the battery was dead, but when I looked at it an hour later, it having been on charge (USB C) I discovered (no instructions) that you have to hold down the selector/tuning switch for a second or two. I have only been playing with it a short time but I think it’s going to be a fascinating, if tedious, little set. Tedious because to change any setting you do of course have to first click down the switch, and then turn either way to select your choice. What impresses me most is the whip antenna, it’s just quality. There’s a of static through the speaker, but when I plugged in my headphones it was much better. However, there’s a fairly high pitched whine caused by the display, which I found out when it automatically switched off. I did try it on a weak and fading signal I found initially on my E5 and then compared (Giovanni Baroni, IK5YZZ on 142.15) and it was equally as good. More to come.

Re: Anybody tried one of these?

that thing is pure junk. I have one laying here. Overloads the radio, very sensitive to "touch and get closer to the loop" motion. Idea is good, but bad constuction. I would not buy it anymore - for no price.

Interesting specific notes there Gord, all useful information, thanks again.

Great stuff Ron. I know somebody on YouTube was strongly suggesting to Tecsun to get it sorted, it might have been the OfficialSWLchannel, so maybe they took notice? Anyway, thanks for that.

Very many thanks Emily, that’s exactly the sort of thing I was hoping to hear, appreciated 🙂.

I guess I have been lucky - I have the County Comm version and one of the new Tecsun PL368 yellow ones ( only a few months old ) and haven't had any problems with either one. I looked at the video with the weird sounds, and I've never had anything like that happen, thank God.

Ferrite location in the 368 radio.

Ron Layton <micron327@...>

I had to open my County Comm GP-7 which is the same as the Tecsun PL-368 to make sure the whip antenna was in contact with the wire to the circuit board. The whip came out after the bottom screw came out. Fortunately the radio was in its soft case so I found the tiny screw. I have no idea why it was so loose. Anyway, I saw the internal ferrite rod antenna and it lies horizontal to the base of the radio. Its about 1 1/2" long if that.

Re: PL-368 Has this fault been sorted?

Ron Layton <micron327@...>

I have the County Comm GP-7 which is their branding on the Tecsun PL-368. As long as you have the model with firmware 3684, the latest, you will have very little if any problems like the one stated above. I think Tecsun did some improvement work to the circuit boards in the radios with the 3684 firmware.

I should have specified that the problem with instability in my Satellit is only when it is in SSB or SYNC mode and is unable to sync. Other than in those modes it is quite stable. I was quite certain that the sync was useless when I got it (new). I recall being quite unhappy with poor (thin, harsh, missing lower frequencies) audio, but trying it now it seems to work quite well in most cases. In sync mode, only when tuned off station so that there is a hetrodyne, or when it is just unable to attain sync, does it seem unstable. But then it is quite noticable. Even just shaking the radio can be heard as a warble in the hetrodyne.

   Regards,
    Gord

Really? That’s interesting Gord, and certainly not something I would have expected from a radio of that quality. Very many thanks for your input
