I had a good try for Simiutaq 720 (phasing WGN), but it was a short few months of effort before they pulled the Big Switch. I did manage the tiny SW outlet on the East Coast in the middle of the 80m Ham Band (?3815), that suffered the same rude fate! If Simiutaq returns I will put more wire out!

Hi,
I realise the Sony ICR-S71 is not an ultralight however it has been mentioned in the ultralightdx group as a few members own this model. Anyway, I am looking to buy one and found it is discontinued. I am hoping Sony release a MK2 or an updated model but for now I would really like to buy an ICR-S71 to try some long distance reception testing.

I will welcome contact from members who have one and would consider selling it.

Kind regards, tjw.

Hello All,
The coyotes must have been howling at Grayland this morning as lackluster propagation sent a collection of anemic Asians into an early demise. Some weak signals showed up on both the low and high band during a mediocre sunrise enhancement but the entire collection bailed out well before 1515.

The only Asians in audio at my 1430 start time were 594-JOAK (poor), 693-JOAB (poor to fair) and 1566-HLAZ (poor). This miserable group was soon joined by 603-HLSA (also poor), 1134 (apparently KBS, but too weak to be sure) and 1503-JOUK (poor) around 1445, at which time it seemed like the band might finally have some potential. Unfortunately that was the high point of the morning, as the entire anemic collection started to plunge into the noise. By 1505 there were only a few gasps left from 594-JOAK and 693-JOAB-- the last Asians to bite the dust on a lackluster morning. Best signals of the session were only fair (and of very short duration) from 594 around 1443 and 693 around 1435. If Bill was trying any live DX at Grayland this morning, he had a good excuse to cut it short and head for the Blue Bouy.

Thanks Guy, and everyone

I have also used the
fishing analogy, and taken it a step further.  Sometimes
when explaining the hobby, I get asked, "Why don't
you just stream the stations from the
Internet?"
I tell
the people that understand the fishing analogy that if they
could go to a body of water with their computer, and have
whatever kind of fish they chose simply appear on their line
just by searching for it on the computer, it would initially
be fascinating, but would get old quickly as there is no
challenge.  Still a good reference to see what each kind of
fish looks like though, which is how I look at streaming
radio.
The same sort
of thing can be said of EchoLink or HamSphere in Amateur
Radio.  I'm sure you Hams have gotten the comment
"Why don't you just call them, or use
Skype?"
I have to
say, the real raised eyebrows come when I combine field
DXing with my other big outdoor hobby: Wild edible plant
foraging.  Nothing like coming home with a full logbook, a
bag of wild leeks, and bundle of cattail hearts!

Hi Paul,
My usual approach is to compare DXing to fishing. Why would someone go to the trouble to travel to a river, stream, or ocean, and tempt a fish to swallow a lure or bait, in the hope they could catch and reel it in? Why not just get your fish at a restaurant or grocery store? Well, everyone agrees it's for the fun and challenge of trying to catch the fish, and that's a comparison I make with DXing.
In fact, most fishermen (fisherwomen too :^) simply enjoy the trip to the outdoors, even if they come away empty handed. It's the same for me while on a DXpedition. Propagation conditions may be lousy, the antenna wire might get snarled (or stolen!), or any number of other gaffes... but I still enjoy the "quality radio time", even if all I hear are the "old friends" on the dial heard many times before. I guess I'm not as competitive as other DXers, because if I log nothing new, interesting, or unusual, I still find enjoyment in the magic of radio.

To these excellent explanations I would add the challenge of stretching something
to perform beyond its intended use. Like souping up a car or bike or overclocking a
computer. The fascination and challenge lie in eclectic "mis-use"...

Even today's teenagers can relate to this :-)

Re: Explaining our hobby to non radio people

Thanks for the excellent reply Jay.
I have been involved in a few "non main stream" hobbies in the past, I am sure most people I know already think I am crazy....

I have an intro page on my blog and this was helpful but the question they asked that I could not really answer is why I / we do it? To them it makes no sense to listen to distance radio stations but not care much about the content....

I seriously doubt you can explain it so that anyone who doesn't already get it will really understand. About the best you can hope for is they'll go away thinking it's no crazier than many other hobbies. Why do people collect stamps? Or scrapbook? Or do needlepoint? For some reason it's just something they enjoy.

As for not much caring about content, I often think of it like catch-and-release fishing. You're not interested in consuming the fruits of your activity, just in the activity itself.

And if you think it's hard to explain listening for radio stations when you don't really care about the content, try explaining that you listen for non-directional navigation beacons that do nothing but repeat their ID in Morse code. I started listening for NDBs because it has the same thrill as catch-and-release MW DXing without having to wait for the top of the hour only to discover the station doesn't ID then. With NDBs, the content is nothing but the ID, repeated endlessly. I'm sure many in this group can understand the attraction of that, but try explaining it to someone who isn't into DXing.
