Taking advantage of disturbed propagation conditions I logged two new stations using an ULR receiver on 2/24/15.

780 kHz  XESFT, San Fernando, Tamaulipas, México (1 kW @ 1286 km / 799 mi).  Heard at good strength from 0122 to 0139 GMT with música and frequent "Radio Ponderosa" IDs.  ULR station #1049 (barefoot #1036 / México #189).

740 kHz. XEQN, Torreón, Coahuila, México (10 kW @ 1335 km / 830 mi).  Heard at fair strength over nearby KRMG, Tulsa OK, from 1232 to 1249 GMT with noticias and occasional "Radio Formula" announcements.  ULR station #1050 (barefoot #1037 / México #190).

Receiver: C Crane Skywave.

Good DX.

(Update to previous Message that I deleted...)

A cheeky person (er... me) asking the Groups feelings regarding the good, bad, pretty or ugly recommendations (or not) for the purchase and use of the receiver generally referred to as the Eton YB-550PE AM/FM/Shortwave Yacht Boy:

Eton YB-550PE Image: http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/portable/0550.jpg

(Thank you to Universal-Radio for use of image if it shows)

Knowing now that it was / is also known as the Tecsun PL-230, and that the very few reviews I have located on-line seem to agree that it is a "hot" receiver, presuming referring to overall sensitivity.

Others feelings as to basic usage, quality, sound quality, thumbs up or down greatly appreciated.

My particular intended use is for general travel and bedside use, perhaps some occasional ultralight DX work in the AM and SW bands, and pleasure listening on FM with headphones, using the onboard antennas, and occasionally external antennas as well.

Thanks to all for any input, as I also located an older Yahoo Group that mentions this model, but the group is not well attended for now.

Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 2-24

Gary DeBock

Hello All,

1575-VOA was the star of a session dominated by the high band this morning, managing its best signal of 2015 (very good) around 1438 UT. The low and middle band regulars were well down from their usual strength, however, and all of the Asians were long gone before 1500.

At the 1420 start of my session only 594-JOAK was in audio on the low band (with fair peaks in and out), but the usual Asians on 603, 693, 747 and 972 were struggling to get out of the noise. The high band sounded much more promising, with the regulars on 1503 (apparently JOUK), 1566, 1575 and 1593 already in and out of the splatter with fair signals. Around 1430 both 1575-VOA and1593-CNR1 got significant daylight boosts up to intermittent good levels, with the Thailand big gun managing to reach its best level of the new year (very good) briefly through some splatter around 1438. From that point on everything seemed to go downhill, with 594 diving into the noise around 1450 and the high band regulars around 1455. The usual low band performers 603-HLSA and 693-JOAB barely managed a whimper during the session, as the high band  delivered the only energetic signals of the morning.

1575  VOA   Ban Rassom, Thailand    Female and male Asiatic language speech with very good peaks (through some splatter) at 1438

Not that i have seen. We did lose two MW stations to FM in the last 10 -15 years which is good for me as it opened two more frequencies for DXing.

NEW ZEALAND MW Changes ahead

April will open up some DX listening opportunities for Nzers  on medium wave.

The Mangere (Auckland) site occupied by transmitters/antennas for the

BBC World Service Auckland (810kHz) and Radio Apna (990kHz) has been

sold for commercial development, necessitating their relocation. These

stations will shortly be hosted at Radio New Zealand’s Henderson site in

West Auckland, meaning a total of 15 AM stations operating from the 2

masts at Henderson.

We can expect shutdowns of all stations at Henderson to complete the

transfer.Addition of new co-hosted stations is a significant technical

project as RNZ’s website
 http://www.radionz.co.nz/outage_schedule
advises that *756* AM (Radio NZ National) could have _early morning

outages of 4 hours 50 minutes on 17 nights between Tuesday 7 April and

Friday 1 May_.

Other frequencies carried by the Henderson masts are

*531*,*603*,*702*,*882*,*936*,*1080*,*1179*,*1251*,*1332*,*1386, 1476

and 1593* – these frequencies will also go silent during April when work

is done on their shared antenna.

So, how are you going to respond to this unusual listening opportunity?

Well, 531-PI, 603-Waatea and 702-Radio Live were "big gun Kiwis" at the Rockwork 4 cliff last July, and I think Chuck snagged a few more of these with his Perseus-SDR and flag setup next to me at the same site. 756-RNZ is usually an underperformer here on the west coast, but 936-Chinese Voice wasn't bad at all last July for 1 kW.

I guess the big difference for us here in North America is that most of these Kiwis are considered highly desirable DX-- not as pests, like NZ residents probably regard them. Without them on their frequencies, Australian stations might squeak through instead-- except at the Rockwork 4 cliff (which seems locked into New Zealand, regardless).

It sold under $100 I think, and now Amazon sellers want HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS for one. Maybe contact Ebay stores that sell SONY radios from Hong Cong or North Korea.

I have that radio in my collection and it is good, but not nearly as good as the ICF-EX5MK2 which sells for around $150 sometimes. - FARMERIK

Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 2-23

Gary DeBock

Hello All,

With the exception of the low band NHK big guns Asian signals hit the skids this morning, with the high band especially dreary. The low band Koreans that were so energetic on 603 and 657 the past three days were long gone, and the only variety this morning was the NHK1 program on 594 and the NHK2 program on 693 and 747.

At my 1415 start time 747-JOIB was setting the pace in the predawn darkness with good-strength English lessons, along with its parallel 693-JOAB at a slightly weaker level. 594-JOAK was in and out with fair strength Japanese conversation, and it appeared that the band might have some potential. Unfortunately things stayed exactly this way as daylight increased, with almost nothing else coming out of the noise. The Koreans on 558, 603 and 657 were missing in action except for a few ghostly peaks, while the usually potent Koreans on 972, 1053 and 1134 were little better. The high band was practically comatose during the entire session, with only a few anemic peaks from 1566 around my 1415 start time. Best signal of a dreary morning was from 747-JOIK, fighting it out with the Puget Sound-covering electrical noise and Portland splatter around 1428.

747  JOIK   Sapporo, Japan   English lessons at a good level at 1428, but through Portland splatter and mystery electrical noise

Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 2-22

Gary DeBock

Hello All,

Low band Asians once again went on a romp this morning, with even odd stations like 657-Pyongyang joining in the party. Like the past two days a potent sunrise enhancement kick around 1435 raised stations like 558 (HLQH), 603 (HLSA) and 657 out of the noise to reach vibrant levels, while the high band generally was anemic at best.

At my 1400 start time the back yard was frozen but the low band DX was already heating up. 594-JOAK set the pace early on with Japanese conversation at a good level, while 693, 747, 774 and 828 weren't very far behind in strength. Around 1425 the low band Koreans came out of the noise to reach vibrant strength, with 558-HLQH (fair) and 603-HLSA (very good) sharing a KBS2 Korean radio drama, and 657-Pyongyang (very good during peaks) broadcasting a mix of dreary orchestral music and bizarre high-pitched female vocals. 603-HLSA hit peak strength around 1445, around which time 1134-KBS also started rising above the Vancouver splatter with good-level Korean conversation. The high band received no such sunrise boost, although Bill's 1575-VOA hung around at an anemic level for most of the session as the best signal on a dreary high band. Overall the morning was a lot of fun, and Bill certainly should have some nice recordings to enjoy after he finishes his trip to the Blue Bouy.

594  JOAK   Tokyo, Japan    Japanese male-female conversation at a very good level at 1448

603  HLSA   Namyang, S. Korea   KBS2 radio drama with Korean female and male speech at very good level at 1446

657   Pyongyang BS   Pyongyang, N. Korea   Dreary orchestral music at temporary very good level at 1443
Spooky-sounding female vocal music at fair to good level around 1441

73 and Good DX,
Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA)
