The higher the permeability with Litz wire coils means fewer turns hence Higher Q for a given length/number of turns. I found the part in 4. kind of interesting ,where it talks about inside and outside reluctance of a coil ,the way i understand it by using a coil like we do the reluctance inside is higher ,and so adding ferrite there we get more boost . Also paragraph 5.3. Where he says that ferrite rods usually have actually less permeability than stated ? I am not saying i understand any of his maths ,this paper seems to be made for formula's but ,maybe higher permeability is some thing to be considered . Re: ferrite quality? Steve Ratzlaff #26980 Hi Ryan, After looking at the ad, I'd say those Chinese rods would be fine, keeping in mind their length and diameter. And they're probably around 125 permeability as most standard transistor radio loopsticks are. (Most of the Russian rods are higher 400 permeability, and who knows what they were originally designed for; they would also take fewer turns for an AMBC coil of a given inductance vs. the nominal 125 permeability rods.) Lower permeability means more turns for a given inductance which equates to higher coil sensitivity for the same rod length. For FSL use, rod diameter just means more rods are needed for a smaller diameter rid vs. thicker rods, for rods of a given length. For single loopstick non-FSL use, a fatter diameter rod is better (more sensiive), again for a rod of a given length. 73, Steve On 3/11/2017 9:34 AM, rmartin100@... Oklahoma TP DX 3/1/17 bbwrwy #26975 Not much TP DX to report for today (LSR at 1300 GMT). 612 unID (4QR?) weak carrier in KCSP 610 slop at 1253. 774 JOUB, fair with woman speaking Japanese at 1010 until 1013 fade out; barely audible with faint NHK TS at 1200. 1098 V7AB, fair carrier signal at 1058. 1116 unID (4BC?) weak carrier in KMOX 1120 splatter at 1245; trace of signal at 1258. 1548 unID (4RD?) weak carrier in KESJ 1550 splash at 1258. Any traces of Asian signals were gone by 1230 due to geomagnetic storm (K-index was 5). And just so you know I won't be counting the wires either ha hah :P You are right I got it from a canadian seller on the bay . I don't have any idea how to confirm what the wire count actually is , but I'm sure it will be better than that stranded wire I used before . If it does have 2000 strands it's not going to be that much better than the 1146 ,and if it has less probably not that much worse :P I see some 1650/36 litz sold by your buddy but it is 3:00 per foot :( might be fun to try someday? Thanks for the offer on the wire,, if you have extra maybe later on I'll buy some from you. I have a couple ideas rattling around in the gray matter yet ? Maybe some thing to try to knock the noise down a bit on an FSL? Or a possible phasing idea ? now you know that will take some material :) Dean_0

That is the reason why I've personally not tried the new 1200/46 Litz wire on eBay, having been very satisfied with the performance of the 1162/46 Litz wire sold by the honest and reliable seller "MkMak222" (who has provided high quality Litz wire to the radio experimenter group for well over a decade). Both Steve R. and I have avoided unknown Litz wire sellers for our FSL experimentation, since there are quite a few inferior products out there. But as for the new 1200/46 Litz wire, you may be the first to try it out in an actual FSL. Oklahoma TP DX 2/27/17 bbwrwy #26968 I listened for TP DX from 1025 until 1316 GMT this morning and logged the following (LSR was at 1303): 567 JOIK?, trace of signal (no audio heard) at 1120-1122; again at 1241-1244. 594 JOAK, barely audible at 1033 and 1239; traces of a signal throughout morning not fading away until 1316. 693 JOAB?, trace of a signal (no audio heard) at 1053. 747 JOIB, barely audible at 1042-1045 and 1051-1053. 774 JOUB, barely audible at 1025; poor, woman in English, at 1027; barely audible-to-poor signal at 1059-1119 (audible on barefoot Skywave receiver at 1115); barely audible at 1226; poor, man and woman in English, at 1229; faded out at 1237; barely audible at 1249-1250, trace at 1303 in KSPI QRM.
