Other DXing Groups
Paul Blundell
Hi all.
Over the past few months (while I was away from the hobby), I removed myself from most of my Groups.io groups, I now can't find most of them. Is anybody a member of any other DXing type groups and can share some links? Paul -- Paul - Moderator UltralightDX

Loggings - 5/1/2020 - Mt Direction
Paul Blundell
Over the past few months my Ultralight DXing has taken a back seat, this has seen me relaunch my blog under a new URL and refocus on the core elements which first brought me to the Ultralight DXing hobby in the first place.
Today was my first session back out, for this I decided to tackle Mt Direction which is about half way between Launceston and George Town. I made it about 2/3 of the way up and found a good location to setup.
FREQ STATION 531KHz - 3GG 540KHz - 7SD 549KHz - 2CR 585KHz - 7RN 594KHz - 3WV 621KHz - 3RN 693KHz - 3AW 720KHz - 3MT 747KHz - 7PB 774KHz - 3LO 828KHz - 3GI 855KHz - 3CR 864KHz - 7RPH 936KHz - 7ZR 1008KHz - HPON Launceston 1080KHz - HPON Hobart 1224KHz - 3EA 1242KHz - 3GV 1341KHz - HPON Geelong 1422KHz - HPON Melbourne On the way down I ran in to some of our native wildlife, including a close encounter with a decent size Tiger Snake (We have three types of snakes in Tasmania, all are extremely venomous. The Tiger Snake in the one you least want to run in to) Photos: https://ultralightradiodxing.blogspot.com/2020/01/loggings-512020-mt-direction.html -- Paul - Moderator UltralightDX

ETM scan on MW and LW Tecsun PL-360
Peter 1956 <pe1etr@...>
I bought this radio, as the antenna socket works on MW and LW, unusual for a Silabs DSP chip equipped portable.
Just using the included plug-in antenna in this case.

Re: 531 kHz UnID-- Ausralian Assistance Needed (Again)
Thanks Will,
<<< I wouldn't 100% rule out 6DL and I was actually going to suggest that as a 'differential diagnosis'. The national weather at the start of your clip makes 6DL a possibility because that's exactly what the ABC does at the conclusion of its news bulletins. The more detailed weather report could be regional WA weather; the showers and thunderstorms with SE winds could have been for places like Albany and other parts of southern WA, or alternatively for the far northern Kimberley region. >>> That sounds very interesting, but other than going back to Hawaii and listening on 531 kHz again, there's not much more I can do to narrow this down to 6DL :-) I checked the ABC website for a Podcast, but in a cost-cutting move they seem to have deleted all of them over 8 days old. The lady's voice and speaking style are pretty disinctive, though, so I'm sure that she will show up again in the multiple Oz recordings made during this trip, or on our wacky plunging cliff on the Oregon coast. Speaking of which, it's much easier to make sure of 531-6DL reception there-- you just record an AFL football game, and you know it's got to be Dalwallinu :-) 73, Gary

Hi Gary,
No problems- I enjoy helping others identify their DX signals. I wouldn't 100% rule out 6DL and I was actually going to suggest that as a 'differential diagnosis'. Regards, Will.

Re: 531 kHz UnID-- Ausralian Assistance Needed (Again)
Hi Will,
Thanks very much for listening to the 531 recording, and for your assessment (which are greatly appreciated). It would seem that the overall evidence would indicate 4KZ for this signal, and since I have another good 4KZ recording from Hawaii, it's OK if this one ends up without definite ID clues. There was an outside chance of tracking down 6DL from Western Australia, so I thought I would investigate all possibilities. 531 is a very productive frequency at our Rockwork ocean cliff in Oregon state, with 6DL, 4KZ, 2PM, PI and More FM all having been received there within the last couple of years (with Ultralights and FSL's). Of course that's no guarantee that they will show up in Hawaii :-) Thanks again. Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA)

Re: 531 kHz UnID-- Ausralian Assistance Needed (Again)
William Renton
Hi Gary,
The weather report and its presenter sounds much like the very detailed reports given on 4KZ. I could only conclusively identify 'showers and thunderstorms' and 'SE winds', a common forecast for Far North Queensland in November. The weather report is usually followed by an ID 'on the KZ radio network' but I think your signal fades at the critical time. The female presenter is probably from a syndicated show so it's not much assistance. At the very start of the clip I think some national weather was given; I think I can hear 'Canberra' and 'Townsville' mentioned. This would rule out the Kiwis. Sorry I couldn't find a 'smoking gun' on this occasion. Best regards, Will.

Top Ten Asian Blasters in Hawaii
Asian propagation is obviously enhanced in Hawaii-- not to mention DU propagation, South American propagation and that from many other areas. The "big gun" blasters are different from the Japanese and Korean regulars in the Pacific Northwest, however. The Taiwan-directed Chinese propaganda stations on 549, 783 and 909 test out your radio's crunch resistance every sunrise, along with a completely different set of big guns like 558-JOCR and 918-RNK in Cambodia. For those who would like to experience these Hawaiian beach blasters, recordings from the top ten Asians at Poipu, Kauai last month are posted below.
549 CNR5 (Zhonghua zhi Sheng) Fujian, China 1200 kW This propaganda mega-station is only 1 kHz away from 550-Maui, but the Hawaiian pest is little more than cannon fodder for the Taiwan-directed female speech at 1520 UTC on 11-5 https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/gfzalx9gc3z3isdjlkfinit3oprjhiy0 558 JOCR Kobe, Japan 20 kW Overwhelming S9 strength is typical from this Japanese commercial blaster, such as at 1523 on 11-5 https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/6mki3j53ywjd8zye2kuuk1n6xnfwymy7 603 CRI Dongfang, China 300 kW The Vietnamese program's Chinese lessons are presumably beamed south, but a listener in Hawaii could have armchair reception on most mornings, such as at 1603 on 11-3 https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/msey1vpfj7ns1o4rkwt78i39u5zktxhv 630 DZMM Quezon City, Philippines 50 kW Depending on propagation, this Tagalog blaster on our domestic frequency could make you wonder if Hawaii has a new local pest, as at 1623 on 11-2 https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/jwcaltkpa4pipy27z5rkvnotqek9iooq 666 JOBK Osaka, Japan 100 kW Southern Japanese stations like this one and 558-JOCR got a major boost from Hawaiian propagation while the others seemed to take a hit. This NHK1 outlet made up for 594 (typically plastered by Honolulu) at 1631 on 11-4 https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/22gs75g6tbb75u8x4p9ayb0h0r99mpyu 738 BEL2 Penghu, Taiwan 100 kW Hawaiian local pest on 740 doesn't slow down this super station at all with its Indonesian program at 1545 on 11-3 https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/uua43tjehvixla46x6idudjepy00ngo0 783 Voice of the Strait (Haixia zhi Sheng) Fujian, China 600 kW Another Taiwan-directed propaganda blaster with S9+ strength every sunrise session, such as with Chinese pop music, 5 + 1 pips and the sign off message at 1556 on 11-6 https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/1dvk49fqtey4cng7385qhafz3k915nft 909 CNR6 (Shenzhou zhi Sheng) Fujian, China 100 kW One more Taiwan-directed mega-station with various Chinese ID's prior to sign off at 1603 on 11-3 (with sign off at 1605). This station, 783 and 549 typically wipe out their frequencies in Hawaii until they sign off https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/61tny0opnqasy5x1zwqe9kwxc3pn2ans 918 RNK Phnom Penh, Cambodia 600 kW Elusive catch on the west coast is a powerful big gun in Hawaii, blasting in every morning with distinctive Cambodian music prior to its 1702 UTC sign off. This S9+ signal at 1652 on 11-3 is apparently a news wrap up before the sign off routine starts (heard on other days as well) https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/ljvxv1bha2307wvj244ol82tpl40hvg0 1575 VOA Ban Phachi, Thailand 1000 kW The VOA's Bengali program sounds a lot better without the Iranian Jammer plastering it (like it did last year, at the same beach). This overwhelming signal was at 1605 on 11-2 https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/dupsdnoee00zbw7fnd9yvqaqkkghoevw Gary DeBock (DXing with Craig Barnes and Chris Rogers in Poipu, Kauai, Hawaii from November 2-8)
