Hi John,

Congratulations on receiving 300 stations on your Ultralight radios--  truly a magnificent accomplishment for somebody on the east coast, with serious nearby QRM.

Here on the west coast it would be even tougher, but we are having so much fun chasing TP's (with deviously modified E100's) that we have reached a general consensus:  quality over quantity  :>)

Good trick getting Ukraine around France-1377.

France-1377 was enormous here last night (along with UK-1215, Croatia-
1134, others) but no evidence of a second station on 1377.

Do you have Tanzania on that channel yet ? It's been bagged on
several of the Beverage-equipped Cappahayden, NL DXpeditions of the
past.

Fall Follies Ultralight MW DX Contests Announced

John H. Bryant <bjohnorcas@...>

The 2008 Fall Follies Ultralight MW DX Contest
October 24 to November 3, 2008

Back by popular demand! With a new contest added to the mix and the rules refined from suggestions of the pioneer participants in the Spring Sprint, the 2008 Fall Follies Ultralight MW DX will take place between 30 minutes before local sunset on Friday, October 24 through 30 minutes after local sunrise on Monday, November 3, 2008.

Participants may choose to enter using one of two 2 classes of recognized Ultralight radios in any or all of three contests:  total number of stations heard in a aggregate four hours of total listening, the top 5 DX stations (aggregate distance) heard the United States and Canada (or United States and Mexico), and the top 5 DX stations heard worldwide.  Participants in the Total Stations Heard contest choose a total of four hours listening time between the above dates, while participants entering either of the top 5 DX stations aggregate distance contests are free to DX as little or as much as they wish within the overall time constraints of the contest.

The primary purpose of this event is not to establish winning scores, but to foster camaraderie among participants and to demonstrate that enjoyment can be had in our chosen hobby with minimalist equipment, at very low cost, requiring only a willingness to sit at the dials. Each participant will receive a certificate and high scores will be recognized.

Mark your calendars now! Rules, entry requirements, FAQs, and contact information will be announced on October 1st on the club chat groups, dxer.ca and the ultralightdx yahoo group.

The definitions of the two classes of radios, Barefoot and Unlimited, will remain the same. However, several new radios have been recognized by the Ultralight Definitions Committee and have been evaluated in the Summer 2008 Shootout and updated Ultralight Gallery, both of which are currently available in the Ultralight Files section of dxer.ca

School has started, frost is already on the punkin in northerly climes and the Fall DX Season is well underway. If you are interested in entering the contest with an Unlimited Class radio, its time to heat up the soldering iron. If Barefoot is your thing, its darn sure time to polish up your memory of the band and your safe-crackers hands for tuning.

LATE OCTOBER WILL BE HERE BEFORE YOU KNOW IT!

best time to Ultralight AM DX

Tim Davisson

Perhaps this is old news to many of us, but
thought I'd pass it along any way, just in
case many don't know:

sunRISE-set is a GREAT time to AM DX. Even,
5:00am-local sunrise is often a fantastic
time to DX.

And, the main reason is beyond propagation.
The reason is, Monday-Fridays, from approximately
5:00am-9:00am...or "morning drive" is when
the overwhelming majority of AM stations run
the mostly LOCAL commercials for local businesses.
Morning drive is "prime time" and prime ad
revenue time for most radio stations.

These local commercials give the advertiser name,
address, occassionally the phone number, and
even website URLs....information that can help
give clues as to what station you're listening to.

And, in moring drive weekdays, many stations
who run programming from satellite talk, sports,
or music syndicators often have live, local
morning shows....or at least a TON of local
breaks. All that means more local content in
morning drive...giving us listeners a ton more
clues about where that station you're hearing
is coming from...and who they are.

Happy ultralight DXing my friends!

73's,

Tim, KD8GZ
near Akron, Ohio

P.S.: FYI...if any of you AM DXers are QSL card
and or verification collectors...and send station
reception reports...I am the guy who gets those
DXer reports for my employer: 1590 WAKR in Akron.
We also own 2 FMs...94.9 WQMX (country) & 97.5
WONE-FM (classic rock). Feel free to mail or
e-mail correct reception reports. I'm pleased to
verify by v/letter with stickers and other station
goodies. TD

I was fortunate enough to get a private (three people including me in
our group) of the transmitter site last summer. I saw a sign that was
doubtless required by Bonneville's lawyers. There is a wooden walkway
from the transmitter building to the base of the tower. Part way down
there is a sign that says the permitted duration past the sign is
limited to six minutes.

Thanks, Gary...I was wondering if the filter upgrades could lessen
sensitivity. When I talked to Sangean about a more narrow filter for
the PR-D5, they said that they could put in such a filter for me, but
I would be trading selectivity for sensitivity. I do not have a
knowledge of electronics, and have no way of knowing if that is the
whole story, or if filters, properly chosen, could be deployed
without a loss of sensitivity.
While filters with more elements do tend to have higher insertion
loss, this does not appear to be much of an issue in real life
these days. Usually you have the same specified upper limit
regardless of whether you're looking at a filter with 4 or 6
elements, with values not getting much higher for ones with yet
more elements. If anything, I would expect a loss of no more than
2 dB or thereabouts - entirely uncritical in any but the most
gain-deficient receivers.

What's helpful in filter mods is that unlike 2-element cheapies,
most any Chinese 4 element filters (as well as reasonably narrow
Muratas) are designed for input and output impedances of 2 kOhm,
a common value among higher-performance substitutes. A mismatch
would not benefit insertion loss and passband ripple, although
the effect on ripple can be expected to lessen with the number of
filter elements. (It would certainly be interesting to look at
the overall filter passband in a modified SRF-M37 or similar -
some set with a 2-element stock filter - using a sweep generator
and scope.)

RadioLabs No Longer Selling Filters and Parts

Guy Atkins

A reply I received from RadioLabs this morning seemed to indicate they not
only couldn't they supply the specific filter I
was asking about, they won't be selling any parts to hobbyists. I contacted
them again for clarification and received this
answer:

"Dear Guy: Yes- feel free to tell them (radio clubs & hobby forums -g.a.)
that we no longer supply ceramic filters, or
even individual parts. What's on the site is really what we have. Thanks
for doing that for us. Best regards, Jess P.,
RadioLabs International Inc."

There goes another source for filters down the drain!

Two vendors to contact, though, are www.wellgainelectronics.com and
www.icomamerica.com. I have bought 450 and
455 kHz filters from both companies recently, but you need to do your
research on the Web to find out exact filter
specs before buying. In the case of ICOM, some of their receivers and
transceivers have useful filters in their SSB, S-AM,
and AM circuitry and the ICOM headquarters stocks replacements that can be
used successfully to improve Ultralight
radios.

Upgraded IF filters, by themselves, provide selectivity improvements, but usually no benefit in signal- pulling power.  Larger and more effective loopsticks, by themseleves, provide great increases in sensitivity, but no benefit in selectivity.

Re: DT-400W IF Filter Upgrades (was Sony ICF-E10W)

Gary DeBock

Hello Richard,

Most replacement IF filters do indeed have some "insertion loss," or a reduction in the incoming signal strength when it passes through the filter.  The amount of insertion loss depends on the actual filter design.

If an IF filter is installed in an Ultralight radio without an antenna improvement, the sensitivity might indeed be degraded.  On the other hand, installing a monster loopstick without installing an improved IF filter might degrade the selectivity.

The most important lesson that Ultralight experimenters have learned so far this year (at least this Ultralight experimenter) is that to really transform a pocket radio into a phenomenal DX performer, you need BOTH an upgraded IF filter AND a more effective loopstick.  With the E100 design, Guy Atkins, John Bryant and I got extremely lucky by accomplishing a "home run" in both selectivity and sensitivity.  With other designs like the DT-400W (with its 450 kHz IF), it's doubtful that we can be so lucky.  But that probably won't keep us from trying :>)

You may be closer to Europe than the rest of us, with a good

Tonight I hunkered in for some SUNSET SKIP DXing with the Ultralight

really sat down and looked around to see what it can do. So far...I am
quite happy with it. Logged 2 NEW Stations for the ULR Log...and 1 of those
is NEW to the OVERALL Log. The Nulling Capabilites are good, it is very
sensitive.....but still has some selectivity problems...especially next to
adjacent frequencies. But hey..2 new ones in an hours listening is OK on
