Re: Finally Logged Station #200
Carl DeWhitt
---Nice going,Kirk !I think i had 100 or so logged in Ok.But now i am
working on my first 100 here in Tenessee. At first i was in Maryville when i got here. Then we stayed in Towsend for about 2 weeks. We are now temporarily living in Walland,Tn but i am working in Knoxville.I have some logs from Maryville and Townsend to get together in one place.I am currently working on 100 logged from here in Walland.I am about 2/3 of the way there. When i get moved into the house i am buying in Maryville, then i will start work on a serious log there. I will post some logs in a a separate message but here are some totals.Countries logged here:5 including a new one all time for me,the Bahamas on 1540.Also U.S.,Canada,Mexico and Cuba.States logged:25 including 2 that i never heard back in Oklahoma. That would be Maryland(2 stations- on 1090 and 1690) and Connecticut(WTIC 1080).I also have been able to make it to 5 states logged in the daytime here. They are Tennessee,North Carolina,South Carolina,Georgia and Alabama.North and South Carolina were real rarieties for me back in Oklahoma.I logged 2 S.C. stations there and that was for special dx tests .I logged 1 North Carolina station there(WBT 1110).I have not been able to log an Oklahoma station here yet but have logged several of the states that border it including Texas and Arkansas. While i was in Townsend i logged a daytime regular for me when i was back in Oklahoma(KGGF 690 Coffeyville,Ks.)The station furtherest west for me,logged while i was in Townsend, was KOA 850,Denver,Co.Hopefully i will have use of my home computer again soon,so that that i can check in more often and report what i log here.Maybe i will be able to catch those elusive New England states that i have not been able to catch before(except for Massachusetts - WBZ-Boston 1030).That was logged in Oklahoma and here. 73 and good dx for now to all Carl DeWhitt Walland ,TN. Just my 2 cents worth here, but certainly, count your local stations. Why not? If it broadcasts, it counts, regardless of where it is. By DXing your locals and semi-locals, you should rack up your first 100 UL stations rather quickly. Personally, if I hear it on the MW band, I count it, including TIS stations, "talking houses", pirates and what not. I also use a DT-200 VX as my primary UL radio, but I may get an E-100 or a DT-400 for my birthday which is after Thanksgiving. I usually run it "barefoot", with no external antenna, although I do have a Select-a-Tenna and a CC Crane Twin Coil antenna. I also have three SRF-59s. I've been in the hobby since 1976. I first discovered DX while living in Idaho, picking up WWV on 10 mhz. I thought it fascinating that there would be a station that broadcast nothing but time! My first rig was an old Heathkit AR-2 my uncle gave me. Over the years, I've used a DX-150B, DX-160, DX-302, DX-440. I currently use a FRG-7, a DX-150B, a Grundig YB-400 and a Kaito KA-1103. I had a lay-off of about 10 years as well, until my "mid-life crises" hit and I got back into the hobby. I was more active in SW DXing and scanning until I got back into MW DXing. I also prowl the FM bands during the summer, when the e-skip is hopping. Right now, I'm in Day 12 of the 300-Stations-in-30 Days challenge with my ULs. I'm at 225 stations with 19 days to go. It's great fun and you might want to take a stab at it to see how well you do! I'm also pushing for 400 stations heard on the UL. Right now I'm at 373 stations. John Cereghin Smyrna DE

Another welcome to the Ultralight MW DX Community. I think that you'll find us a friendly bunch... Thanks for being concerned about what considered to be "legal" or ethical to count in awards programs or contests, etc. Logging your locals is like shooting fish in a barrel, except these fish often come back to haunt us, as Kevin pointed out. One of the happiest effects that I've noticed is that many stations that are semi-locals in the daytime disappear at night... This is because their ground wave just isn't strong enough to compete with sky wave from further distant stations... and they are c;lose enough to you for you to be in their skywave "dead zone." The angle that their sky wave would have to take up from the transmitter to reflect down to you is just to steep to be reflected by the ionosphere..... so, some of those almost-locals will disappear for you at night, thank goodness. As far as what one may count in awards, etc... I've always felt that if it were licensed by a legal authority AS A BROADCASTING STATION, it was plenty OK to count.... I know that some people count TIS stations... I don't. I would guess that we would leave those up to the individual DXer, though the Committee has never discussed such. Beyond that, I'm personally against counting Talking Houses :>) but the Committee hasn't taken a stand on that one either. So, thanks again for asking.... but go ahead and count those locals.... they WILL come back to haunt you :>) Welcome to the crazy world of Ultralighting, George! John B. Hi George:
Welcome to UltraLighting! I say of course you can count locals - in fact, I see it as compensation for not being able to log several distant stations on that frequency. Being in the Seattle area, the first 10-20 stations are easy for me as well (unfortunately...). 73 - Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA Hi all,

Question about "eligible stations"
George Keller
Hi all,
I've got what may be a stupid question, but here goes anyway. When counting logged stations for credit toward various milestones, like 100 stations, 20 states, etc., do local stations count? I live in northern NJ, near NYC, so there are a bunch of locals that are no challenge to log. I would think that they count, but I'm not sure. I started BCB DXing back in the early 1960s with a National NC-60 5-tube AM/SW radio. I laid off for many years and only got back into it last year, when a friend in my ham club mentioned the fun he was having with a Grundig 300. I bought one at RatShack and had a ball for a few weeks listening around the eastern states and Canada, logging stations out of habit. I came across this group a few weeks ago and it piqued my interest in some serious Ultralight DXing. Last week I bought a Sangean DT-200VX from Amazon for $50. This thing is truly amazing, and I'm hooked on Ultralights! I've been doing some casual listening with it (and logging as I go) and I started counting up the logs from the two tiny radios and realized that I have over 40 without really trying (and without any locals). I think that I'll be aiming for a 100 pretty soon. 73, George W2GEK

Ultralight SUNSET DX...New Station # 6 for the day!!
Hi Guys:
Snuck in another hours DXing at Sunset tonight and Logged NEW STN # 6 for the day!! New for both the ULR Log and the OVERALL Log! Vietnam-675 mp3 on a Modified E100
Hello Guys,
Most of the recent new Ultralight TP countries
have been logged by John Bryant with his Wellbrook array at Grayland, but by a
strange quirk, the first Ultralight logging of Vietnam was by a Slider-loopstick
E100 far from the ocean, in Puyallup, WA last month.
Uploaded to the file section on the Yahoo
Ultralightdx site is a recent recording of Vietnam-675 on the modified E100,
here in Puyallup. Thanks also to John, Rob Ross, Kevin Schanilec and many
others for making Ultralight DXing the hottest subgroup of the AM-DX community,
with the Yahoo group site now having over 100 enthusiastic members!

Recent Loggings - Good DX Conditions
Kirk Allen <kirk74601@...>
I certainly have to agree with Rob Ross about last night and this
morning. It seemed like conditions were very good. I haven't logged this many new stations in a long time in an 8 hour session. Very motivating for me. 1420, KTOE, Mankato, MN. Faded up just long enough to catch an ID @ 0606 UT. I was very lucky on this one. 1470, WVOL, Berry Hill, TN. Playing EZL urban vocal mx. ID 0635 UT. 1420, WLET, Toccoa, GA. ID 0700 UT in a brief null from KBTN, Neosho, MO, which was the strongest station here. Listed 65 watts night power. 1420, KPOC, Pocahantas. AR. Clear ID @0815 UT. Listed 118 watts night power. Many stations were up and down on this freq this morning. Extremely lucky to catch ID's of the three I logged here on 1420. 1330, WVHI, Evansville, IN. Very nice and clear ID at 0900 UT. Religious pgm'g, "Insight for Living." 1kw night power. 1350, KCHR, Charleston, MO. C&W mx w/ID hrd around 0915 UT. MANY other stations on this freq just fighting like crazy to be the dominant one. 1540, KZMP, University Park, TX. Programming in SP with many "La Ranchera" slogans thrown in between songs. Full ID at 1200 UT. 620, KTAR, Phoenix, AZ. 2 stations here just trading places for dominance. KTAR was running one very long infomercial just like the stuff on TV that can bore the pants off of one and all...yawn. I got lucky at 1231 UT, this sta faded up nicely just in time to catch their full ID. I don't normally have this kind of "luck." 660, CFFR, Calgary, Manitoba. Very nice copy of this one from 1236- 1255 UT. Local programming with traffic report and local weather. Many ments of Calgary. VG signal. I certainly can't do those marathon listening sessions all the time, but while conditions seemed to be ripe, I just couldn't pry myself away for very long. This is all John Bryant's fault, ha ha ha. Yip, he's a motivator alright! Thanks, John!! Take care guys and great DX at ya! Kirk Allen JRC NRD-515, Eton E-100, Sony SRF-59 Ponca City, OK

WOW, Great job, Rob! You're pulling stations out of the ether just
