Overnight loggings

Last night conditions were excellent for long distance medium wave
signal propagation. I should have been DXing on my G313e or R75
communication receivers, but was listening on a E100 instead.

I heard the following new stations:
1520 KSIB Creston IA 2231 UTC under KOKC with country music.
1130 CKWX Vancouver BC CAN 0439 UTC with news and spots for Vancouver
Job Shop. 400th station logged and first from BC. (Thanks to
Kirk Allen for saying he'd heard CKWX the night before.)
774 RNE Spain 0522 UTC with woman speaking in Spanish. TA #2 &
country #9.
1030 KWTO Casper WY 0631 UTC country music with ads for businesses in
Wyoming.

Also had a strong het on NE/SW bearing on 1521 kHz at 0144-0152. It
was first noted at 2253 UTC, and was gone by 0310 UTC. I'm sure it's
BSKSA, Duba, and some night I'll hear audio in a KOKC fade.

Heard Hrvatska (Croatia) Radio on 1134 kHZ with a good signal breaking
through the IBOC (HD) noise. It was 100% readable at 2020 UTC.

Did not hear JOUB or JOIB like earlier in the week, although I had a
het on 774 kHz at 1233-1242. There was a het on 972 kHz from 1252
until it faded away at 1303.

All heard on a barefoot, factory aligned Etón E100.

I hope everyone had a good night of DX. Best wishes for a great
weekend.

Re: Heard first TA on URL

bbwrwy

It is Hrvatska Radio, located at Zadar, Croatia. Hrvatska means
Croatia; one of the independent states of the former Yugoslavia. The
transmitter is located near 44°06'N, 15°15'E.

Here in north central Oklahoma the signal seems to be best between
0130 and 0300 UTC. Last night it was penetrating through KMOX's HD
(IBOC) signal with a good strength as heard on an E100. Not bad for a
distance of approximately 8791 km. / 5462 miles.

Re: questions about the Grundig G5

Hi Carl,

The Eton E5/Grundig G5 can tune SSB, but it has no USB/LSB switch.
They usually go for about $150, which I believe is the list price.

You might also want to read this message about the Sony 7600GR,
which does have a USB/LSB switch:

Part of the reason I like the Terk is because you can put dinky (oops,

outstanding! I can get very good results 10 KHz away from locals that
the PR-D5 has difficulty with. I was expecting that the TERK would

good selectivitywise in an urban setting, the G6 - TERK combo is even

Although daytime listening benefits to a degree that is exceptional

The G6 seems to work well with the TERK inside the loop, or next to
the outside of the loop with the radio perpendicular to the plane of
the loop.

Last night i had a station on 860 i.d.ing as Oldies 860.It was followed
by a call sign which sounded like WDGS .But i could not come up with
anything matching that in the FCC database.I heard it here in east
Tennessee after 10 P.M. and before 11 P.M. Eastern time with poor
signal.I know the call started with a W but not sure about the other
letters except that it was a four letter call.Any ideas ?

listening at 0312. It was all heard on a barefoot, factory aligned

Around sunset until about 0130 UTC, I continue to hear a het on
1521.
You can't imagine how much I've learned about University of

I did tune to 1575 last evening but old time pest XERF was too
strong.
I had a possibility on 774 kHZ but my eyelids crashed.

Because the E100 was tuned to 774 I heard JOUB right after I awoke
this morning with possibly the best signal ever. It was 100% copy
at
1151 until 1152:30 UTC when it faded away. There was no QRM from
WBBM
and local KSPI was off. At 1157 I heard a woman talking in
Japanese
on 747 kHz briefly. Then it seemed like someone pulled the curtain
shut around 1200 for nothing was heard afterward. The het on 972
kHz
I've been monitoring the last few mornings wasn't audible.
Although
conditions appeared to have deteriorated, I could still hear CBW
990

E100 Four Variant Shootout Article

Gary DeBock

Hello Guys,

Most of you have probably heard about superb new performance modifications for the Eton E100 Ultralight radio, including an innovative Slider loopstick, and a razor-sharp Murata CFJ455K5 IF filter.  But in these days of financial stress, many DXers are wondering whether these improvements are really cost-effective, and what kind of actual DX performance boost they can expect.

To answer all these questions and more, the ultimate E100 competitive performance article has just been uploaded to DXer.Ca.  A stock E100, a Murata filter model, a Slider loopstick model, and a fully modified E100 "shoot it out" in both daytime DXing, and also in transoceanic DXing at the isolated ocean beach of Grayland, WA.  Full details are given on the cost-effectiveness of each modification, as well as interesting background information on the development of what may become a legendary loopstick, and the selection of the perfect IF filter. Enjoy!

How about the Sony ICF-S5W with the Terk loop?

Paul
The TERK provides only a slight increase in sensitivity, but it is difficult to find the sweet spot, and, as result, is not worth the effort unless one was set up on a table where a great deal of care could be given to positioning and tuning. At night, it is nearly impossible to figure out if I am hitting a tuning peak.
Heatwave
P.S. The G6/TERK combo is quite portable...again, a discernable, but not night and day improvement over the ICF-S5W or PR-D5, but easy enough to manage where I find it comfortable to stand in my driveway,  tune the G6, and peak the TERK...the selectivity that is realized with that combo is great.

Re: Not sure about 1134

MarkWA1ION

For me sunset at the receiver works much better than sunrise at the
transmitter.

The less domestic station area to the west of you that's in dark, the
less interference you get. This is particularly important
for "barefoot" ultralight use when you don't have the advantage of a
null in the opposite direction of desired DX (as you would have on a
cardioid-pattern terminated Flag, Kaz, Beverage, or phased array of
verticals or loops).

When I went to Texas in the '80s on business trips, I was able to get
Saudi Arabia 1521 best of all TA's. This was with a Sony ICF-2010 in
my room at the Residence Inn on Montana Ave. next to the El Paso
Airport. KOMA (as 1520 was then) was rough but could be nulled some
to reveal the Saudi. The fact that the '2010 had been upgraded with
a better narrow filter helped. I also noted Morocco on 1044, Algeria
on 891, Portugal on 1035, and a couple from Spain. Northern Europe
didn't figure in much: even the big blasters of those days (now
defunct Norway - 1314 and Germany - 1593, as well as still-active UK -
1215) did not make a showing. Conditions were definitely slanted to
the Mediterranean area.

I don't think Croatia was running as much power back then.

More recent trips to Florida and South Carolina still show Saudi 1521
as the big blaster overall, with Canaries - 621 and Spain - 585 & 684
good on the low end.

Of course few locations in the US can compare with the coastline from
Cape Hatteras northward to Cape Cod and then up into Maine for
overall quantity and quality of TA DX. Just like Grayland for the
TP's.

I recently posted a log report for two recent after-work mini-
DXpeditions to Granite Pier in Rockport, MA. The first outing (UTC:
8-9 OCT) included use of the Eton E100, both barefoot and external-
loop-assisted. Most DX was with the SDR-IQ with "post-game analysis"
(listening to the stored RF chunks after the fact).

Full details are
at "http://home.comcast.net/~markwa1ion/granite_pier_2008.htm". The
page has a link to some audio clips as well.

FABULOUS, KIRK.... Bravo... Excellent and Yahoo!!!

Now you guys gotta get a TA from Okie Land.... 1134 Zadar has been my
easiest on other equipment... It tends to peak at ground sunrise at
the transmitter, tho' sometimes earlier.

Great going, Buddy!

<<
John:

I listened to 1134 kHz this morning after midnight and all I could
hear was IBOC hiss, probably from KMOX. It seems to be the same story
on 1116, 1206 and 1215 kHz. I've tried to hear something on all of
them overnight.

In the good old days I often heard RNE on 774 and BBC on 1215.
Another was Dakar on 764, but I don't think they're still around.

I often hear a healthy het on 1521 in the early evening, but KOKC 1520
is just too powerful. However last night I was hearing a high school
game under the playback of Bob Stopes' weekly news conference. I just
couldn't piece together enough to figure out the station.

I feel there's a good chance of hearing the Canary Island on 621, with
KMKI and CKRM nulled.

My biggest problem in the evening is drooping eyelids.
