Re: The Fall Follies Start THIS Friday!
John H. Bryant <bjohnorcas@...>
Hi Guys, Oh, DANG IT ALL!!! The official rules govern, of course. Its four hours, to be broken in a maximum of 8 segments, each a minimum of 30 minutes and my failing brain just mushed all of that together, DANG IT! 4 hours Thanks to Eagle Eye Kirk Allen for spotting my error. Sorry for the confusion. John Bryant!

Re: The Fall Follies Start THIS Friday!
Kirk Allen <kirk74601@...>
Hi Guys,
I'm a bit confused on the rule for the most stations heard. In the pdf file I saved from dxer.ca, the rules say a total listening time of 4 hours, but this posting states 8 hours. Maybe I missed something, but could one of you guys help clarify this for me? Thanks. I hope everyone enjoys the competition. 300-in-30 Days Challenge- Halfway Home!
John Cereghin <pastor@...>
Yesterday was Day 15 of the Challenge and it has proven to be
beneficial to the log. After 15 days, I have logged 247 stations, or 82.33% of the way to the goal. I've been able to add 33 new stations to my main Ultralight log, bringing that total to 379 stations. I've also been able to add 14 new stations to my overall log (I'm not sure how many stations I have total- around 740, but I'm in the process of re-editing my master log). This is exactly what I hoping for- adding a number of new stations as a result of the Challenge. Hopefully, a combination of the Challenge and the Fall Follies may add even more stations- onward to 400 total! Over the last two days, I've been sitting on 1300, 1310 and 1320. I got a tentative ID on that gospel station on 1300 and I'm pretty sure it is WJMO in Cleveland OH. I added WABD-Asbury Park NJ on 1310 this morning, WNQM in Nashville TN on 1300 last night. I had a station on 1310 this morning with a partial ID of "...sburg, West Virginia", then into ABC news at 0700. Maybe WSLW in White Sulphur Springs VA? Lewisburg WV is nearby and maybe they included Lewisburg in their ID? John Cereghin Smyrna DE

Dennis Gibson <wb6tnb@...>
I'm really enjoying mine. If you run into a weak signal it works very
well with a passive loop such as a Select-a-Tenna or Terk loop (I have both; they perform identically). The Terk is cheaper and much nicer looking. 73 --- In ultralightdx@..., "John H. Bryant" <bjohnorcas@...> wrote:

Guide to using passive loops now posted at DXer.ca
satya@...
Hi all:
Just posted on the DXer.ca web site is an 8-page guide to using passive loop antennas. There is so much more you can do with these besides simply delivering more signal to your portable radio or desktop loop: increased selectivity, adjacent channel notching, co-channel phasing, image reduction and more. Check it out at by clicking the Ultra-light File area tab at DXer.ca. 73 Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA

Don't I recognize your name from the "Good Old Days" in either NASWA, NRC, Fine Tuning or some such??? My problem is that I'm so old that there are too durn many Good Old Days :>) I know what you mean about noise, though I am fortunate to live in a fairly noise-free environment right now. You, in the townhouse, and the E100 are excellent candidates for a couple of strategies in the Unlimited Class of Ultralighting. First and easiest would be using a small air core loop inductively coupled to the E100: Something like the Terk or the Select-a-Tenna. That route might give you a better S/N ratio plus a better chance to null at least some of the noise. Kevin Schanilec has written a fairly advanced article on using such small loops in the last 6 weeks... a wonderful article that has been published in several of the club bulletins. Kevin will be putting that article up on our Ultralight Files area on dxer.ca in the next few days. He is also writing a more basic (near beginners') article that should be out soon. The second route would be to turn your E100 into what will soon be a classic Unlimited set: the "Slider E100." That amounts to transplanting a 7.5"x.5" Type 61 Amidon ferrite bar and sliding tuning coil onto the E100. A brief look at how to do that is covered in one chapter of the four part series of short articles on hotrodding the E100 by Gary DeBock, Guy Atkins and me. We are all so convinced that the Slider mod is the number one way to hotrod an Ultralight that Gary and I have spent quite a bit of time putting together an expanded step-by-step article (7 pages!) called "YOU CAN DO THIS! More About Building the Slider E100." We are flabbergasted that so few people seem interested (so far) in this wonderfully simple (two screws, two solder joints!) and relatively inexpensive mod (under $30). The Slider mod. turns the already great E100 into a flat out DX Demon! So, the second way to go might well be turning the E100 into a Slider version.. especially with the outboard antenna mod, too. That would allow you to use the full range of tricks to beat the urban signal to noise radio.... including two room-size single turn vertically-oriented loops (around the walls) that could even be phased together before insertion into the Slider E100. If you get the idea that I'm running my own hobby with one eye firmly on the day when I, too, may be in a townhouse, you would be exactly right :>) Anyway, that YOU CAN DO THIS article will be announced and posted on the dxer.ca website soon. So, John, keep us up on how you are doing with the E100 and don't forget about the Awards program (look on DXer.ca for details) and, if you are so inclined the FALL FOLLIES, which start tomorrow. Hi John, yes I am very impressed with the E100 and have not really done much DXing in some years. My challenge now is noise. I live in a twelve unit town home, condo situation and the noise floor is very high. Might have to bundle up and sit on my small front porch or go hang out in the car somewhere. Not sure what else to do, but winter does get cold in Wisconsin. LOL
