TA possibilities on ULRs from east Tennessee
Carl DeWhitt
I am wondering what might be my best possibilities for receiving TAs
here in East Tennessee on ULRs ?I would think Algeria 891 and Saudi Arabia 1521 might be possibilities.Other suggestions ? Carl DeWhitt Walland,Tn |

--- Nice going ,Kirk.I once heard the St.Petersburg station on 620
back in Oklahoma. At the time their call sign was WSUN if i recall correctly. Here in the Knoxville,Tn area we have WRJZ in Knoxville on 620.However, their signal seems weaker at night and i am not sure they are a 24/7 station. They air Christian talk and preaching. In the evening,it might be possible to log something else on that frequency here. Re: DXing East Asia in the Heartland
bbwrwy
I've found JOUB 774 has long been the easiest of all trans-oceanic
stations to receive here at my rural QTH. I agree with Gary, from my experience November is the best month for hearing Japanese stations, followed closely by December. Listen from around 1000 UTC until past your local sunrise. My log book shows the earliest I've ever heard the station was 0841 UTC on 11-22-86. Much is dependent on your local QRM situation. And, expect long fades. Yesterday (11-6-08) was my best reception of JOUB ever, and hopefully that will improve in the coming weeks. But this morning nothing more than a trace of a het, around 1100 UTC, was audible. I'll admit surprise when I heard JOUB on a SRF-T615 on 9/30/08. Since then I've heard the station several times, once on a barefoot, factory aligned E100. Good luck. Richard Allen, 36°22'51"N / 97°26'35" W (near Perry OK) |

DXing East Asia in the Heartland
John H. Bryant <bjohnorcas@...>
As you may know, Richard Allen of north central Oklahoma has recently
received Japan on at least two occasions on a BAREFOOT ULTRALIGHT!
Receiving East Asia on MW in the Heartland is not unheard of, though it
is rarely reported and the receptions on a hand-held ultralight
transistor radio simply must be unique. East Asian DX in the
Heartland is rarely reported, I'm convinced, primarily because very few
people even try for it occasionally. More of us on the Prairie are
aware of the possibilities of TA DX from Europe and North Africa in early
to mid-evening during the Fall Seasion... hence we try for it and
occasionally report it.
I think that it is fairly possible that East Asian DX is available in the central US during this part of the Fall Season during all but the worst propagational years. I'm also coming to think that the most reliable part of the year to try for such East Asian DX is RIGHT NOW, when here in Washington state the Japanese tend to peak a full hour before our local dawn... That would be peaking around 1400 UTC or a bit earlier, rather than, classically at our dawn around 1500 or later. Right now, China and the Koreas are USUALLY peaking around 1500 here. With the current sunrise in Oklahoma at about 1300, the early peak of the Japanese here may relate to Richard's success. In hopes that a few of you folks in the center of the continent will give the TPs a try this weekend or in the coming week, here is a cheat sheet for the strongest of the East Asians, rated from A+ being "the best" to D- being "worth trying but don't hope too much": 531 Japan NHK1 C 594 Japan NHK1 A- 666 Japan NHK1 C 693 Japan NHK2 A- 747 Japan NHK2 A 774 Japan NHK2 A+ 828 Japan NHK2 A 873 Japan NHK2 C 945 China CNR1 C 963 China CRI Russian Service B 972 South Korea B 1017 China CRI Korean Service C 1206(low) China "local" Korean Svc C 1377 China CNR1 C 1475 Malaysia's Tagalog Propaganda Station on North Borneo (yes, 1475) D- 1566 South Korea HLAZ, Christian broadcaster FEBC in various languages B- 1575 Thailand V. of America megawatt blaster B- If you want to try for North Korea, they mostly play western orchestral martial music and are usually off frequency enough to really mess up a channel and reduce your chances of actually hearing anything intelligible. the best frequencies, all D-, are 657, 819 and 855. Good luck.... and by the way, the NHK stations are all excellent QSLers. The CNR and CRI stations should be reported to the proper address in Beijing and have been good QSLers, though that MAY have changed recently.

New State
Kirk Allen <kirk74601@...>
For the life of me, I'd never ever been able to hear a MW sta from
Florida until this morning. A very tough frequency at the time. I monitored 620 from 1120-1210, 11/7. I was hearing Fox Sports net pgm'g when the signal would fade up for a bit. Finally at apx 1148 UTC, I copied a lcl trfc report, lcl ads, and an ID. 620, WDAE, St. Petersburgh, FL, 1120-1210 UTC, 11/7. Also this morning on 540,from 1107-1115 I heard Radio Australia pgm'g much to my surprise. It was CBK, Regina, SK airing some of their pgms until back to their side of the big pond at 1115. Regional wx rpt for SK, especially the southern part of SK. Makes me hunger for some TP loggings! Have a good one, gents, Kirk Allen Ponca City, OK |

Re: DXing East Asia in the Heartland
Hello Guys,
As John has explained, whenever your local sunrise
coincides with a DX station's sunset, amazing receptions can occur on
Ultralights. Currently the Asian sunset propagation peaks are shifting to
an earlier time frame, and not coinciding with the west coast sunrise
propagation peaks as they did in September and October. This makes west
coast sunrise TP DXing not as productive as in the previous two
months, but for those Ultralight DXers in the heartland, local sunrise
should more closely coincide with the Asian sunset, producing the greatest
chance for Ultralight TP loggings.
West coast Ultralight TP-DXers can also still
hear a lot of Asian DX during the Far East sunset, especially from 0745-1015
UTC. The original SRF-59 loggings of JOIB-747 and JOAK-594 (which kicked
off the Ultralight boom late last year) were made in November, during the Asian
sunset peak. Good luck to all DXers trying for their first Ultralight TP
catches.

Re: Another UNID 550 Station Solved

Congratulations Kirk on solving the mystery. I must listen again
because it didn't sound much like German to me. Thus far this morning (11/7/08) no Japanese station has been noted. I interfaced the SRF-T615 with a Quantum Loop for the first time, but it wasn't any help. So I'm back to barefoot. There was a strong het on 1520/1521 kHz (NE/SW bearing)last evening, but KOKC was too strong. With that said, I did manage to pull KRHW, Sikeston MO, passed KOKC, for a new logging. The trouble is I had to endure way too much talk about Sooner football while waiting for an ID. Best wishes to Kirk and all for a fantastic DXing weekend. JOUB audible in Oklahoma
bbwrwy
This morning KSPI, 780 kHz, didn't switch on their transmitter at the
usual time of 1100 UTC. That permitted me to hear JOUB, 774 kHz, using a barefoot SRF-T615. At times the signal had fair copy with some XEMF and WBBM spill over. I was able to listened to part of an English lesson at 1223-1226. Sadly KSPI fired up the transmitter at 1227 and JOUB was lost until another day. Also had hets on 594, 693 and 747 kHz. The latter was strong at times, but no audio punched its way past the WSB and CKJH QRM. The strongest het of the morning was heard on 972 kHz for a few minutes after local sunrise. But no audio was heard through the KCFO and WDAY QRM. Folks on the west coast should have been able to hear JOUB with a crystal set this morning. Anyone west of the Mississippi River could have heard it depending on tehir local QRM situation. Good DX to everyone. Richard Allen 36°22'51"N / 97°26'35"W (near Perry OK) |

Did it! For the 300 Stations in 30 Days Challenge, I got stations 299
and 300 this morning. Number 300 was WDFN-1130 in Detroit. As a result of the challenge, a total of 52 new UL stations were added to the log, which now is at 397 stations, so hopefully, number 400 won't be too far behind! John Cereghin Smyrna DE |

Re: 300 Stations!
Congratulations John,
We all admire your accomplishment of successfully
receiving 300 stations in 30 days on your Ultralight radios, especially
considering your east coast location. It certainly requires a lot of
effort, and patience. Good luck on your future Ultralight
adventures.

New Station In Oklahoma
Kirk Allen <kirk74601@...>
Thanks to Richard Allen for telling me about this new station. KEOR
from Catoosa, OK is now on the air on 1120 khz now giving occassional IDs. One ID heard here at 1952 UTC. "1120, KEOR, Catoosa." They're playing oldies music. The station is listed in Topaz as being a daytime station only, running 2000 watts. They list the station in the list of all stations on 1120 as being from Catoosa, but when you use the left column to figure distances from your receiver to the station, it lists the station and shows the distance from you to Atoka, OK. Putting in a VG signal here at first. At 2040 UTC, KMOX suddenly faded in but still separable from KEOR, causing some rapid up and down fading. No ID at the TOH, and no ads heard and I tuned out after a second ID at 2053. As Richard told me, the station has unusually long dead air between songs. Today the dead air is lasting from 5-15 seconds or so. This station has some significance to me. It's my 250th station logged on a ULR. Thanks Richard. 73, Kirk Allen Ponca City, OK |
