Congratulation on the new stations logged Kirk. Yes it was a windy
day, which resulted in a long power outage here. But it was a good day for daytime DX of stations in Minnesota, Iowa and the Dakotas. The best I've encountered since the 1980's. Here are my logging for the 24-hours from 2200 UTC on 12/2/08: 1230 WHIR Danville KY 2302 UTC 12/2/08 SRF-T615 1230 KFPW Fort Smith AR 2306 UTC 12/2/08 E100 1230 KKPC Pueblo CO 2333 UTC 12/2/08 E100 1270 KFLC Fort Worth TX 0054 UTC 12/3/08 E100 1280 XEAW Monterrey NL MEX 0103 UTC 12/3/08 E100 680 KKYX San Antonio TX 1320 UTC 12/3/08 SRF-T615 710 KEEL Shreveport LA 1330 UTC 12/3/08 SRF-T615 810 KSWV Santa Fe NM 1407 UTC 12/3/08 SRF-T615 1250 KBRF Fergus Falls MN 1523 UTC SRF-T615 1270 KNWC Sioux Falls SD 1554 UTC 12/3/08 E100 1350 WCMP Pine City MN 1625 UTC 12/3/08 E100 1100 WZFG Dilworth MN 1723 UTC 12/3/08 E100 Heard a station on 880 kHz signing off in English at 2215 UTC (1715 EST), 12/2/08. I didn't catch the full call sign, but it began with the letters "WR". I found a Spanish language station WRRZ, Clinton NC, signs off at 2215. However, it might be WRFD, Columbus- Worthington OH, but I don't when they close down for the day. Can anyone help? After six straight days of hearing JOAB 594 at local sunrise, the frequency was silent this morning. All that was audible were hets on 783 and 972 kHz and they were silent by 1200 UTC. Heard Glas Hrvatske 1134 at 0223 12/3/08, but didn't listen long because of the KMOX HD noise. Also, heard the carrier on 1521 kHz until it went silent at 0259:45 UTC. I hope everyone has a good DXing night. Richard Allen 36°22'51"N / 97°26'35"W (near Perry OK) |

Re: Slider antenna vs. C. Crane Twin Coil
Hello Gary,
Recently John Bryant gave a plywood-mounted Slider
E100 to Kirk Allen, and I gave plastic-mounted Slider E100 models
to Kevin Schanilec, and Colin Newell.
Both Kirk and Kevin have mentioned that their
Slider E100's outperform certain external antenna accessories in
sensitivity, and Colin also has given a similar great report..
As one of the designers of the Slider antenna, I
try to avoid criticism of competing antenna systems, and let others give their
own report on its superior capabilities. Within a few days, I think you
will hear more about these direct comparisons run by impartial observers,
which of course will persuade curious DXers much more than anything that I could
say.

Greetings from wind-blown Oklahoma,
Since I don't weigh all that much, I better stay indoors today. The wind is blowing like ya wouldn't believe here. Awso, but I found the perfect pasa tiempo for blustery times like this. Tnx to Gary Wilt who must have been good luck for me in logging this first station below: (Times/dates listed in UTC) All hrd on the Eton E-100 slider. 590, R. Musical, Santa Clara, VC, Cuba, 1010-1026, 12/3/08, clscl instr and choral mx, dissonant mx at first which later came together more harmoniously thank goodness, ID W 1016. 580, KJMJ, Alexandria, LA, 2253-2302, 12/2, Hrd in the null of WIBW (Topeka, KS) w/ religious pgm'g. ID'd as "Radio Maria." This is a rel network I'd never hrd of until last evening. 550, KRAI, Craig, CO, 2331-2350, 12/2, Tnx to Richard Allen's tip a while back. C&W mx and some ads mentioning Craig, Colorado. 1060, WQMV, Waverly, TN, 0205-0230, 12/3, THANKS to Richard's tip yesterday, this sta was heard here w/ a decent signal. "Music from the 60's, WQMV." Listed as only 4 watts night power. I wonder abt the accuracy of that since they were hrd so solidly here in OK. 1100, KNZZ, Grand Junction, CO, 1427, 12/3, ads promoting Christmas shopping in that area of CO, W ancr discussed precautionary measures for dealing with or preventing an avalanch. Not a new station below, but I want to make mention of this one. 1600, KRVA, Cockrell Hill, TX, 1422, 12/3, booming signal this morning w/ chatter in what sounded like Vietnamese although I can't say for sure. I'm really rusty on trying to identify East Asian languages. I'm curious if any of you guys have hrd this one before. It really shocked me the first time I logged it. I'll shut up. 73's Gents, Kirk Allen Ponca City, OK |

GS Ultralight loggings Dec. 2, 2008
Greg Shoom <shoomg@...>
Ultralight loggings for Tues. Dec. 2, 2008. All stations logged from Toronto, ON. Dates and times in UTC.
One more station and one more Canadian province added to the ultralight log. Total ultralight count: 213. Total provinces: 3. 990 CBW MB Winnipeg - 02-Dec-2008 2358 UTC - CBC Radio One. CBC Radio ID with frequency given as 89.3. Promo spot for show "As it Happens" coming up in 30 minutes. CBC Radio news show "The World at Six". Astonishingly strong signal - I listened to it for ten minutes and it came in solid and steady with almost "local" quality for most of that time. Programming one hour behind my local time - i.e., "The World at Six" began at 7 p.m. my local time. 50 kW. Sony SRF-59 (Good). Best, Greg Shoom VE3LXL |

A Few New Ones
Kirk Allen <kirk74601@...>
Greetings All,
I just received an email from Richard saying conditions were really good last night. I wish now that I would have listened more. After sending John Bryant a picture of the slider he sent me, he says the ferrite rod is broken! I guess dummy me should have asked him a bit sooner about the way the rod droops down. Nevertheless, it is still outperforming the Eton E-100 with the SAT even w/o utilizing the entire loopstick! I did catch a few new stations for the ULR log all hrd w/ the broken slider E-100. 1510, KMRF, Marshfield, MO, 2258-2302*, 12/1/08, ending bdcst day, ID and s/off. Nothing really caught my attention on the freq after they left the air. 1030, KCPA, Corpus Christi, TX, 1130-1202, 12/2/08, Rel pgm in SP giving a San Antonio address, ID in EG & bk to EG pgms at 1200. 960, CFAC, Calgary, MB, Canada, 1202-1233, 12/2/08, ESPN pgms I think, mention of the "Blue Devil Golf Course" in an ad, tough copy. Re: A Few New Ones
Hi Kirk,
Even if the Slider loopstick loses a
piece of its ferrite bar, as long as you can still peak the coil on the DX
station's frequency, it will still operate at near 100% efficiency. This
is because the coil peaking compensates for any loss of inductance due to the
missing ferrite piece, resulting in near-optimum performance.
During the summer all three of us (John, Guy and
I) experimented with huge loopsticks, (17", 22.5" and 27"), trying to get more
sensitivity out of the Slider. The consensus was that the 7.5" model
provided a lot of DX for its size, and that a lot more ferrite really didn't
help as much as expected. So the loss of a piece of ferrite is no big deal
for a Slider, as long as you can still peak the DX station's
frequency.

GS Ultralight Loggings Nov. 30, 2008

Ultralight loggings for Sun. Nov. 30, 2008. All stations logged from Toronto, ON. Dates and times in UTC.
Three more stations added to the ultralight log. Total ultralight count: 212. 1490 WBTA NY Batavia - 30-Nov-2008 1305 UTC - News. Two IDs. Sunday morning religious program. 1 / 0.71 kW. Address given for sending in notices: 21 E. Market St., Corning, NY. No ID, but address given is that of WENI so identity is certain. Long deep fade-outs. 1 / 0.93 kW. Sangean DT-400W (Poor). --> New station for the overall log. 1240 CJCS ON Stratford - 30-Nov-2008 1738 UTC - Oldies: ELO's "Sweet Talking Woman", Bryan Adams, Paul Simon. ID as "AM 1240 CJCS". 1 kW. Sangean DT-400W (Poor) --> I actually heard most of this on my car radio (where the signal was fair to good). Had the DT-400W with me, so I got out of the car and tuned it in on that in order to log it on an ultralight. This is a semi-local station but I have not been able to hear it at my home. But just a few miles to the west, it comes in with a usable signal during the day. (For Toronto folks: my home is near Yonge St., and I got this near Keele St. So the edge of CJCS's daytime groundwave coverage appears to be somewhere between those two streets.)
