Re: Rookie question on tuning steps

Hi Jay:

Is the eton e100 considered an ultralight in the barefoot class even
though it looks kind of big in the pictures and has an antenna?

Some of the ultralights are analog, so there are no frequency steps.
Tuning
is continuous.

Some of them, like the currently hot Eton E100, allow "fine tuning"
in 1kHz
steps.

With some of them, the manufacturers have finally realized their
radios may
eventually be used in places where 10kHz does not work well. They've
added
the ability to switch between 9kHz and 10kHz steps.

Some, again like the E100, combine switchable 9/10kHz steps with
1kHz fine
tuning.

The frequency step is definitely something to look out for when
shopping.
Even if a radio allows switchable 9/10kHz steps, it's still nice to
be able
to off-tune 1kHz sometimes to get away from adjacent stations.

Normally,

I would not attach a document to the entire group.  However, I have made an abbreviated Listing of just our Distance Records.... only listing the current record for each category.  There are a number of these records that I'm CERTAIN have been surpassed in someones logs.... or soon will be.  I've highlighted those "most vulnerable" records in red.

Please take a look. you may already have a World or Western Hemisphere record in your log book or you may be like Allen Willie and manage to set three new records with one logging this week!

Please submit logs to me at this address for Records or Firsts and I'll happily update the list!

UPDATED ULTRALIGHT RECORDS PUBLISHED

John H. Bryant <bjohnorcas@...>

There was a lull in new Firsts and Records for the first half of the summer.  Since then, there have been many new country Firsts established... Gary DeBock and I adding quite a few Pacific and Asian countries and Allen Willie continuing his march through Asia and Africa.

Until Allen's superb catch of KNX, Los Angeles, we have had few new distance records though.

I've updated both Firsts and Records and a new, up-to-date list is available in our files area at dxer.ca.

Hi Nancy:

Per the CCrane web site, to change to 9 khz tuning on the Sangean DT-200VX:

"To change from 9 kHz to 10 kHz turn the radio off, press and hold the
"Up" tuning button and then press the power button at the same time. To
change from 10 kHz to 9 kHz press and hold the "Down" tuning button and
then press the power button at the same time."

Hope this works!

The change of frequency setups on the Sangeans is a bit tricky - it takes some practice. I don't know if your receiver is identical or not, but be patient with it...

OK, bear with me and my rookie question, as I'm brand new to the
ultralite/dxing hobby. I have an old radio shack pocket radio with
digital display that looks identical to the Sangean DT-200VX. It
allows me to search/select frequencies but only in 10KHz increments.
If the other digital radios are like mine, then how do folks tune into
international stations in the middle of the steps, like 774 KHz? I can
see how it could be done with an analog, rotate-the-wheel kind of
radio, or with a digital radio (like my SW Grundig 400PE) that allows
me to adjust the steps to 1 KHz, but I don't see how to reach those
intermediate frequencies if my radio only goes in 10KHz increments.
I'm sure there's an astoundingly simple answer that I'm just not
getting. Thanks for any wisdom you can share on the topic.

i'll play with the lw a bit more. from what i saw in some of the

This is the same eBay seller, dejl1myt, that I recently purchased my
Sony SRF-T615 from for $95.00. I don't want to take all the credit,
but I have been corresponding with him to bring these Japanese-Only
radios to the DXing community at a decent price. He has also recently
sold a new SONY ICF-EX5 for $155.00 and if you work with him, he can
find those used, too.

I'm glad you didn't retire. Your accomplishments with the SRF-M37V

am always amazed by what you can hear on the minuscule receiver.

New World, Western Hemisphere and North American Record Reception

John H. Bryant <bjohnorcas@...>

The way to cause new record reception is for the record-keeper to (finally) update the records. I did that two days ago and was holding them until I heard from one record holder about a typing error that I think that I made.

Sure enough, last evening, Allen Willie heard KNX on 1070 with his trusty SRF-M37V. .... A superb catch that set three new records and was a First at the same time. WOW!!!

Allen, you ought to have that M37V bronzed and put on a pedestal! (Along with your brain and ears, of course!)

Those Saskatchewan and Manitoba stations seem to be hanging in there again lately. I logged a few  a while back . Look for CHSM Steinbach Manitoba on 1250 and CFRY Portage La Prairie  on 920 , they seem to accompany CJGX early mornings also  when it's in.

Heck !! I'm still trying to log an Alberta station  Who knows !!! There's hope yet now that I've heard California
