Re: update 100 in 7 quest

Gary DeBock

Hello Carl,

Congratulations on your DXing skill in receiving 106 stations in 7
7 days, on your SRF-59 and E100 Ultralight radios. That is a great
accomplishment, and a very fitting way to celebrate the first
anniversary of the ULR movement. Best wishes for a lot of DXing fun
this winter!

recent loggings barefoot/stock, & Happy Thanksgiving

Tim Davisson

Recent new ULR loggings on the little SRF-59:

850 WYLF/Pen Yan, NY at 5:40pm w/standards (I have a local on
850kHz. who's less than 20 air miles from my home! They were *ON* at
the time!)

810 WHB/Kansas City at 5:57pm w/WGY Schenectady nulled.
740 KRMG/Tulsa at 5:59pm w/CKZM Toronto nulled.
540 CBK/Regina at 6:50am overtop CBEF in Windsor w/CBC-1 network.
560 WMIK/Middleboro, KY at 6:02am.
970 WBLF/Bellefonte, PA at 6:16am w/a LOCAL morning show, who's
announcer had such an incredible voice I thought it was network. It
was local. Wow!

Up to 231 UL stations heard...but, only DX 3 or 4 total hours a
week...usually at sunrise or sunset here in Ohio. ULR is a real
thrill. And to do it with a $14.00 radio with ZERO modifications and
no outside antenna...that's the real fun of it for me.

To fellow US-based ULR hobbyists: Happy Thanksgiving from Ohio.

JOAB 594 heard in Oklahoma

bbwrwy

This morning at local sunrise (1319 UTC), I heard JOAB, Tokyo J, on
594 kHz, with a fair signal. Using a E100 coupled to my 35 year old
Space Magnet, I heard a man and woman speaking in Japanese, at 1319-
1323 UTC, with slight QRM from KXSP and KCSJ on 590 kHz.

At 1323-1326, I was able to hear JOAB audio, at a much weaker level,
on a barefoot SRF-T615.

JOAB is my third ULR TP and at 10660 km (6624 miles) my longest
distance yet.

Earlier, at 1005-1019, I heard fair audio from JOUB 774 on barefoot
E100. Also heard the following:
1258 UTC 567 kHz het (QRM: KLIF 570)
1304 828 het (QRM: WCCO 830 & WBAP HD 820)
1313 747 het (QRM: KRMG 740 & Unid XE 750)
1314 774 het (QRM: KSPI & XEMF 780)

I did not hear the het usually heard on 972 kHz around sunrise.

I'm finding the E100 and Space Magnet are a good combination. Due to
its better selectivity and 1 kHz tuning, the E100 has the edge over
the more sensitive SRF-T615 for listening to split frequencies.
Overall, the little Etón receiver definitely gives you a lot for its
low cost.

Wishing all a happy Thanksgiving holiday. Good DX.

Hello Gary,

Living as you do with severe local QRM, your accomplishment of
receiving TWR/Vatican Radio on 1467 kHz with a stock DT-200 is
impressive indeed. Congratulations on your accomplishment, and we hope
you log many more Ultralight TA's this winter.

100 in 7 quest-Success !

Carl DeWhitt

I have been seeking to log 100 stations in 7 days on URLs.Though i have
the rest of the day to add to the log,my unofficial total is now
104.But that includes 3 un i.d.s that i will not count if i cant i.d.
them.So i have achieved success in logging 100 in 7 days.Receivers used
were the Sony SRF-59 and Eton E-100 mostly barefoot but some logged
with the Select-A-Tenna.I will send a summary of the final results
after the quest ends tonight. Many have been re-logs but there a number
of new logs as well.

Subject: [ultralightdx] Wow! Oh, WOW! A Japanese Morning from OKlahoma

We are just settling in here in north central Oklahoma and I only have the NW-SE leg of the Wellbrook Array up and running. Snuggie the DX Kitty got me up at 1200 (LSR=1310) and almost on a lark, I tried 774 for Japan with my hotrodded NRD-535... nothing.  But there was a definite het on 747 (about a 2 or 3 on the NW Scale).  I decided to try 828... just a 2, but clearly a het, so I decided to do a quick sweep of the band, starting at 531, as usual.  NHK1  Morioka is almost always there on decent JJ mornings from my NW site... but almost always at "mumble" level. No way did I expect a het on 531 from here in OKlahoma...BUT, there it was, at a 2!  There were better hets on 567(!), 594 and 693, but nothing was close to audio.

I had other things to do and hoped that LSR here would bring more bounty. It did.... not great amounts, but still really amazing from OKlahoma:

Re: Wow! Oh, WOW! A Japanese Morning from OKlahoma

John:

I awoke early and was surprised to hear JOUB 774 at good signal
strength on a barefoot SRF-T615 at 1101-1108. I heard hets on 693,
747, 828 and 972 kHz between 1114 and 1127 UTC. Afterward I was
chasing domestics, except just before 1200 I had a strong het on 774
that faded into the WBBM/XEMF QRM. A few minutes later when I checked
it was all KSPI (why don't you walk over there sometime and pull the
meter for me - only joking).

I've spent a lot of time listening to the 972 het and have yet to hear
any audio. Sometimes it's very strong around sunrise.

I guess I should have been listening with the G313e instead.

The conditions were somewhat erratic overnight. Except for a couple
of stations in Saskatchewan, most of what I was hearing was to the
south. I pulled in XENK 620 for the first time this morning by
nulling a strong CKRM signal at 1218. Only a trace of KMKI and KTAR.

Have a good Thanksgiving. Myself, I'm off to Wellington for a family
get together.

Ultralight Award Submissions..........A Special Request......

robert ross

Hi Guys:

Thanks to all Ultralight DX'ers who have submitted Logs for Ultralight
Awards the past few months. We have issued a Ton of awards and it looks
like everyone is having a lot of FUN DXing with ULR's and hearing some
Monster DX.

One request I would like to make for those who are submitting Logs for
AWARDS...........

Please let me know what CLASS OF RECEIVER you are using and submitting the
Logs for.

The 2 Classes of Receivers are.....

BAREFOOT CLASS

UNLIMITED CLASS

Since we have separate Awards for each Class...we need to know what you
used to obtain the Award. It is also helpful if you list the Model of Radio
or Radios you used.

As we issue more and more awards....it gets more complicated to keep track
of what Classes each member has submitted for in the past....so please help
us out and let us know what Class of Award you are submitting for.

Thanks for the co-operation.......keep up the good work with the
Ultralights. Hopefully our 2nd year of Ultralighting will be even more
productive than our first!!

Wow! Oh, WOW! A Japanese Morning from OKlahoma

John H. Bryant <bjohnorcas@...>

531: Persistent weak het (NHK1 Morioka)
558: Persistent weak het (JOCR Kobe)
567: NHK1 Sapporo peaked right after 1300 with JJ audio... time pips, weakly, at the TOH. Heard on Slider E100+Wellbrook
585: Persistent weak het (NHK1 Kushiro, Hokkaido)
594: Strong het at dawn with hints of audio (NHK1 Tokyo)
666: Strong het at dawn (NHK1 Osaka)
675: Persistent weak het (this is "always" Vietnam in the NW, but there are a couple of 5 kW NHK1 stations here)
684: Weak het here at LSR (I have no idea who this was!)
693: Peak caught at 1252 in "imaginary level" Asian audio (NHK2 Tokyo)
702: Peaked at LSR with weak audio in Asian lang. (Almost certainly North Korea) Heard on Slider e100, too
747: Persistent weak to moderate het (NHK2 Sapporo)
792: Weak het at dawn (South Korea???)
828: Persistent weak to moderate het (NHK2 Osaka)
954: Weak het at dawn (JOKR, Tokyo)

1566: Weak het at dawn (HLAZ, South Korea)

The fact that I've just completed listening to East Asia on MW every morning for three months in the Northwest was, of course, a huge help in knowing where and what to look for... What I found, of course, was a classic low band opening to Japan with virtually all of the usual suspects present.  After the surprise of the whole thing, the remaining surprises were the hets on 675 (Vietnam???), the total absence of 774, NHK2 Akita (it is almost always the strongest of the 747//774//828 group) AND the fact that the audio came not from one of those three but rather from 567 kHz., NHK1 Sapporo.

I might add that the only Far East stations (even as hets) that I've ever heard from here previously have been 747//774//828//873, though this is so difficult that I've rarely even tried in recent years.

We are leaving here in a couple of hours to spend five days with extended family in Ft. Worth, TX and I'm struggling with attitude and priorities :>) With luck, maybe Richard and Kirk Allen can use the list above as a starting place for an Asian Thanksgiving.
