To whoever posted the fmscan.org site:Thanks !From the am scan
section ,i printed out a list of 185 stations that should be audible
here all within 270 km of here.There were 133 stations on the list that
i had not logged.That is now at 131 stations.There are lot more targets
left to hear from less than 200 miles away.Just logging these would
give me a total of over 300 stations.The list will be very helpful in
ading to my totals i am sure.

Hello all,

I did a quick sensitivity comparison of a G6, an E100 and a DT-
200VX. "0" means Nil, "1" means Poor, "2" means Fair, "3" means Good.

Station (G6, E100, DT-200VX)
530 Simi Valley TIS (2, 0.5, 0)
530 LAX TIS (1.5, 0, 0)
550 KUZZ (2, 1, 0.5)
980 KFWB (3, 3, 2.5)
1700 XEKTT (2, 2, 1)

The G6 is much more sensitive than the E100 at the low end of the
band, and the E100 is more sensitive than the DT-200VX across the
band. These are all stock, unaligned units. I've tested one other DT-
200VX that performed essentially the same as this one.

I compared the low band sensitivity of the G6 to my 7600GR, and it
was almost as sensitive. For such a small radio, the G6 has
outstanding low band sensitivity.

Unfortunately, the G6 has some nasty birdies on 580, 770, 1160 and
1350 kHz. They sound like computer noise (whirring), and they can't
be tuned around. Using an external loop like the Terk or the C.
Crane Twin Coil can overcome them. Without an external antenna,
reception on these four frequencies will be very difficult.

The E100 is a "cleaner" receiver; it has only one birdie around 640
kHz (varies by temperature). It is just a pure tone, and tuning up
or down 1 or 2 kHz can usually get around it.

I haven't noticed any birdies on the DT-200VX, which is a good
thing, given its 10 kHz tuning step.

The E100 has slightly better audio than the G6, at least on AM, and
I prefer its rotary volume control. If you need SSB or standalone
low band sensitivity, then the G6 is the way to go, otherwise the
E100 is a better value at current prices.

I finally snagged a station in Washington last evening on a barefoot
SRF-T615.

I was trying to hear KIRO on 710 kHz, but QRM from Radio Rebelde
caused me to give up. I moved on up to 1000 kHz where I heard, at
0009 UTC, a man (in studio) talking to a woman reporter about a snow
storm and high winds in the area, including the mountains. She also
mentions travel on Highway 18. She was followed by a male reporter
talking about the affects of the storm on events and shopping. The
signal suddenly faded to barely audible, under nearby KTOK, at 0012,
and was inaudible by 0013. A check of the KOMO website found there
was a significant snow storm in the Seattle area. That led me to the
Washington state DOT site that showed Highway 18 is in the Seattle
metro area. FCC site indicated local sunset, hence change from
daytime to night pattern, is 0015 UTC.

I've learned more about Washington geography since than I knew before.

Later, I heard a weather forecast from CKWX 1130, Vancouver BC, for
snow in the city and warning of blizzard conditions in the mountains.
The temperature was -8° (17° F).

I was surprised to hear KSLL 1080, Price UT, under pest KRLD, at 0650
paying Christmas music, with an ID "KSLL" at 0700, followed by a two-
minute ABC newscast. I was surprised because KSLL is a daytime
station, although they do have Critical Hours authorization. Then I
heard them again this morning at 1300-1306 through the KRLD signal.

I hope everyone stayed warm overnight. I know it's warmer here than
where most of you are listening, but I felt -12.5° (9° F) was a dang
bit cold.

Good DX, and remember headphones will keep your ears warm.

     Thanks for your detailed comparison testing of the G6, E100, and DT-200VX.  Although there is no G6 here, your findings of the relative sensitivity of the E100 and DT-200VX confirm my own testing, done for the Shootout articles on DXer.Ca.

 

     The low-band sensitivity weakness of the E100 has been well documented, and is entirely due to the tiny, flat stock loopstick. It was the major reason for the development of the Slider loopstick modification during the summer, which completely solved the problem.

 

     The DT-200VX also has a sensitivity limitation on either high or low band, depending upon which segment the alignment technician wishes to favor (on yours, it is apparently weak on low band).  A DT-200VX unit also had a Slider loopstick transplanted into it here recently, which made it equally sensitive with the Slider E100's all across the AM band (although much trickier to make than the Slider E100's).

 

     The Sangean DT-400W seems to have the best wide-band sensitivity of any stock Ultralight tested here recently, although still far short of the Slider models on every frequency. For stock units, it seems a fairly good value at around $55.

Hi all, have been out of the UL loop recently but had one logging yesterday which made me very very happy and got my interest going again. VOA Poro Point, Luzon, Phillipines, 1170, 1635 UTC om in special English talk about Pakistan / Afghan politics - fair peak, distance: 6658 miles / 10715 km I first logged this a few days back on my regular set up ( even that was a shock) and wondered could I manage it with the barefoot SRF 39FP. After about twenty minutes of listening around sunset the English local Magic 1170 went into a deep fade revealing VOA in the clear. It was a really thrilling moment. Thanks, folks. Looks like the eastern shore of MD is the place to go.
I'll take a trip to Assateague Island State Park on Sunday. The MW scan
map is totally blank for a pretty big radius. The website says it's open
year-round and you can park by the beach.

I'll report whatever my results are.

The only major downside I can see is that you still have Philadelphia,
NY and Boston near or at the same angles as most of Europe, from a quick
look at a great-circle map. But at least no close-by BCB transmitters.

And wow--Kevin, that map makes me amazed that I've managed to DX from my
home location.

Point, NC looks like an RF-desolate place.

Overall it was a good night for DXing. I spent too much time
listening to 940 kHz trying to hear CINW, Montreal. I would like to
log Quebec and that appears to be my best bet.

It's suppose to turn very cold here tomorrow morning. So, that means
I have no excuse to wander far away from my little ULR's. Best wishes

I'll be putting together a little report on doing timed recordings from an Ultralight.  As I mentioned previously, I've wanted to apply the techniques that many GY DXers use to general hands-off DXing with an Ultralight. The general idea is to set the radio and antenna combination up on a specific frequency, with nulling, etc. set for an interesting direction and then leave the radio on all night. You connect the audio of the radio to a computer (laptop in my case) and use one of the software audio recorders that can be programmed to record periodically to  record TOH audio from the radio.

With Ultralights... unless you own a LOT of batteries, you need to supply a DC source to the radio, since it may run 24/7. The Eton e100 that I use has an input port for 3 vDC and Eton sells an aftermarket wall wart sized appropriately.  I was unable to find the specs of that little power brick, so I've ordered one to test.  In the meantime, I've been feeding the E100 with regulated 3.0 VDC from a regulated bench power supply.  I wound the feed line through a ferrite torroid 8 or 9 times as a noise choke, just to be cautious and I've not been able to detect any noise induced in the radio by running on "mains power."

I connected the headphone jack of the e100 to the microphone jack of the laptop with an audio cord that also had a ferrite noise choke. Since there is an impedance mismatch, setting the recording level and the volume of the receiver audio takes some care, but is easily accomplished. I use High Criteria's Total Recorder software. It is one of the two most popular amongst the GYers, I believe The other is ReCall Pro.  either recorder is easy to program for timed recordings and works like a charm.  I record from xx:58 before TOH until xx:08, well after any five-minute news plus commercials is over.

I'm using the Slider E100 with an outside antenna, so having the E100 close to the laptop is not a problem.  I think that this same strategy could work well with the Ultralight and the computer separated by a long audio cord (10'?  25'?)

I've got Total Recorder set so that it automatically titles each recording with the date and time of the recording, so I just have to know what frequency the radio was tuned to.  It takes me about 20 minutes to go through a complete over-night TOH recording and, so far, I've been getting one or, usually, two new stations each night.  I find it particularly interesting to watch the mix of stations change as the night passes from sunset through evening to very late night and then to dawn and post-dawn. Its often quite a parade.

As one of the older mossbacks in this hobby, I share the mossback concern as to whether this remote recording strategy is "really DXing at all," and I avoided it for years for that reason.  Last year, though, when I got involved with Graveyarding, I quickly concluded that it was really the only way to DX GY and maintain any sanity at all; after I began the remote recording, I found that I quite liked it.

In any case, once I have the data on the e100 wall wart and give a try to remote recording a Barefoot unit with a long audio cable, I'll do a more formal report...  If you are curious and have a bit of time over the Holidays, you might give remote recording a try!

Hi Guys:

Well...it looks like a good few Days to stay holed up in the house and
do some Serious ULR DX'ing!!!! We are smack dab in the middle of a MAJOR
SNOWSTORM as is a large part of the Mid West and Great Lakes Area!! She's
howling pretty good out there right now with High Winds and LOTS of SNOW!!
This is a real Weird storm as the SNOW is coming outta the West....but the
Winds are outta the EAST.....and any storm we ever get from the east is
bizarre!! I filled the Gas Tank on the Snow Blower this morning....and
later tonight when this is all over (Hopefully)...we'll go out and ride it
around for a few hours!!

I did a little DXing in Mid afternoon yesterday..and again late last night
and this morning...and was able to find 3 More NEW STATIONS for the ULR
Log......One of which is also NEW to the OVERALL LOG as well.
I was surprised to hear SASKATCHEWAN on 620 Khz last night!!

Also another GRAVEYARDER for GY # 42 on Ultralight Radio!!

Radio used for this DX was.........SONY SRF-T615 with 2 1/2 Foot Homebrew
Tuneable Box Loop.

ULR LOG TOTALS are now.......................582 Stations heard.

     You have some excellent ideas for chasing GY stations, especially for those of us with no chance to spend long hours at the dial.

 

     Maybe the time has come for the final experimental frontier--  the "SDU" (Software Defined Ultralight :>)
