I did manage to get in on the TA frenzy tonight with my first log of BBC-693 around 2030 Eastern.  Nothing else was heard, even after straining at 1539 and 1575 except for Croatia on 1134, all on the DT-400W

Also heard tonight:

920    WYBY Cortland NY, 1645, Bible Broadcasting Network, traditional Christian mx, //webstream, Bible Broadcasting Network

Now at 477 UL stations.

Great conditions here in the North Atlantic the past two evenings. Nothing new to report as of yet.

China Radio  via Marnach, Luxembourg was very strong here earlier this evening on 1440 khz as well as Croatia on 1134 khz as logged by  Gary De Bock  Nice catch Gary !

Nice catch  of Radio Farda also by Robert. The nights that Radio Farda is in here  so too is Radio Sawa from Kuwait City on 1548 so you might want to try for that one also.

Good job, Rob.  1575 has been a bust for me so far and I've been using every combination of radio and antenna I have.  But I dud get BBC-693 tonight on the DT-400W.

Hi  Guys,

Yes it's a great night here in the North Atlantic for TA's  I have my SRF-39FP fired up  tonight.   Congratulations Robert Ross on your logging of England on 693 khz
Great Going !!!  If you ever hear  Spanish also on 693 khz that would be  from the Azores .

As far as your unidentified on  675 khz i'm thinking pretty  definite it's probably Radio Maria   Lopik Netherlands as that comes in here pretty decent most nights.

They have religious programming but seem to play a lot of light and classical music selections at times with not many announcements.  If you hear arabic talk or chants  on 675  then that wiould be Bengazi, Libya but I tend to think more likely tonight it was the Netherlands station.  you had there.

Best of DX to all

ULTRALIGHT DX....My 2nd TransAtlantic!! NEW COUNTRY England!!

robert ross

Hi Guys:

After falling asleep on the couch last night.......and waking up at 2330
EST to see all the messages of everyone logging TransAtlantics all over the
place, I decided to pull out the ETON E-100 Slider and see what I could
hear!! I was hoping that I was not too late and they were all gone!!

I was able to hear 1134 Croatia again for a relog...they were doing quite
well!! This is the Only Trans Atlantic I have logged previously...so even
though it was fun to hear again...it was nothing new.

I started at the bottom of the Band and worked my way up. I found a Rather
Strong signal on 693 Khz...and it was in ENGLISH!!! That was
great.......and soon thereafter I was able to ID it as the BBC ....for a
New ULTRALIGHT Country of England!!

I had another fairly strong signal with Audio on 675 Khz.....in a foreign
language...but I wasn't able to ID the Language OR the Station!!

Anyways.....a New Country for the ULR Logbook....and a New Station too!!

If anyone has any idea who the 675 may have been...or maybe logged this at
the same time I did....I'd be happy to hear what it was???

Radio Used was..........ETON E-100 Slider with Murata Filter

ULR LOG TOTALS are now.............621 Stations heard.

Gary Deacon logs KMOX-1120-- Breaks All-Time Ultralight DX Distance Record!

Gary DeBock

Hello Guys,

On an exceptional night for transoceanic DX, Gary Deacon of Fish Hoek, South Africa has managed a really incredible logging--  KMOX-1120 in St. Louis, Missouri on a BAREFOOT Sony SRF-M37V!  (8,560 miles, or 13,776 km).

This amazing reception shatters the all-time Ultralight radio DX distance record made by John Bryant (and me) at Grayland, WA, when we received 5AN-891 in Adelaide, Australia on modified E100's.  But Gary's KMOX-1120 logging was with a stock pocket radio, on the 2" loopstick!  Congratulations, Gary.

Great to read about the good T/A conditions in the Northern Hemisphere.

I thought I'd share the surprise barefoot T/A reception of 1120 KMOX, St.Loius via the Sony SRF M37V just over an hour ago. The station made it through to my QTH here in Fish Hoek this morning (24 January) at 0305 UTC with an id and 5 day wx forecast.  I nearly fell off my chair as KMOX is not often heard even via a conventional receiver and Beverage antenna !

At over 13 776 km / 8560 miles this appears to be the most distant of the 9 North American AM stations to make it through barefoot to this part of the world so far.

Thanks to John Plimmer and Gary DeBock for your kind comments regarding the reception / QSL from 1410 KQV.

Congratulations Gary,

You have just broken the all-time Ultralight Radio DX distance record, held previously by John Bryant (and I) for receptions of 5AN-891 in Adelaide, Australia from Grayland, WA, on Slider E100's.  We both new it was only a matter of time before you guys would break the record.  GREAT JOB!

Larger crate loops, and direct-coupling to the Quantum Loop base unit

satya@...

Hi all:

Ive continued to tinker with these loops, stacking crates together to
make larger units, using the contra winding technique to get a lot more
wire on and cover larger frequency ranges, and hooking them directly into
my Quantum Loop base unit in place of the normal ferrite loopheads.

The results have been quite positive, and I have updated the Crate Loop
article on DXer.ca with a bunch more options and details.

1134 TA Audio Strong at 0203 on Slider E100, MP3 made

Gary DeBock

Hello Guys,

Discovering that the modified portables work much better in the frozen back yard than inside the warm house, the 30" loopstick ICF-2010 and Slider E100 were taken out to the icy picnic table in the patio, whereupon the Slider E100 made a nice MP3 of male-voice audio from presumed Croatia on 1134 (from 0202-0203Z).   1575-Farda was tried for, but the frequency is a wasteland here, with a local on 1580 and semi-local on 1560.  This was my first Ultralight TA (trans-Arctic?)

1134 TA Audio on Slider E100 at 0118Z

Hello Guys,

Audio from presumed Croatia has been dropping in and out on the modified ICF-2010 (30" loopstick) here in my backyard, and hit at peak at 0118 (during which it was also audible on the stand-alone Slider E100).  Male voice heard at that time, but dropped out shortly thereafter.

Hi Folks

Today I was fortunate to receive my first QSL from T/A reception via an ultralight here in South Africa.

The reception occurred at Noordhoek, Cape Peninsula via the Sony SRF-M37V and 220 m BOG. The 5kw signal from 1410 KQV managed to make it through over a distance of over 13 030 km. Also a personal first.

News Director Frank Gottlieb kindly verified the reception and recognised KQV announcer Bruce Sakalik's voice with their station id at the end of my attached audio clip.

Presumably this TA award would be for west coast DXers ?

TA's are not difficult anywhere near the coast in the New England
states or Atlantic Canada so I'm not sure the award would mean as
much there.

Hello Gary,

Congratulations on receiving a great QSL (for your superb logging of KQV-1410, at a distance of over 13,000 km).  That is a very impressive accomplishment, and the distance is only a shade less than the all-time Ultralight DX distance record.  Good luck on more thrilling DX.

Re: Croatia-1134 Received on E100 Slider in Victoria, BC!

Gary DeBock

Hi Mark,

West coast TA reception on an Ultralight is tough indeed!  Guy Atkins managed to receive Farda-1575 during a Grayland DXpedition on a stock SRF-39FP in November, and Colin Newell heard audio from Croatia-1134 last night on his E100 Slider.  Nobody else has managed to do this (including me).  A first Ultralight TA award for a west coast DXer would be a tremendous accomplishment. (I wonder who will be the first East Coast DXer to manage reception of TP audio on an Ultralight ?)
