ULTRALIGHT DX....ULR # 600 LOGGED and 601 and 602
HI Guys:
Well...after 13 Hours of Listening to static...I have finally Logged ULTRALIGHT STATION # 600!! However..the parade did not stop there. Today was one of those days where all the stars aligned and along with Logging # 600....I heard 2 More to bring the totals up to 602. All 3 of these stations are NEW to the OVERALL LOG as well.......and they are also ULR GRAVEYARDERS # 49, 50 and 51. As well...the Last Graveyarder logged is also my 1200th BCB STATION heard OVERALL!!! So...it is a TRIPLE PLAY Today....and brings my Ultralight DX Year to an amazing end!! It was looking real bad earlier today as the conditions this afternoon were real POOR at best. I was hearing NOTHING again...and then all of a sudden the floodgates opened!! I was still hearing good stuff when I was called to supper.....but I already had # 600....and a few spares...so I reluctantly trudged off to the Feeding Trough!! AHHHHA Here are the STATS that bring me to where I am today in ULR DXing....... First ULR Station Logged JAN/01/2008 600th ULR Station Logged DEC/28/2008 Elapsed Time to achieve 600 Stations was........362 Days (No Listening was done during May, June, July, and almost all of August) Along the way I have heard.......... 567 Domestics 34 Latins 1 European 51 Graveyarders 36 States 5 Provinces 11 Countries 3 Continents And who said you can't have a Bag of Fun with 2 Penlight Batteries!!! HAHAHHA Thanks to everyone who paved the way for this great Sub-Culture of AM BCB DXing...and to all who offered encouragement and helped me during the Trek!! It has been a pleasure to be Part of Ultralight Dxing's First Year...and a Great Year it has been for all involved!! I hope my enthusiasm has spilled over to a few of you...and truly hope that you are having as much fun as I am!! For those who have not yet become involved with ULR DX'ing....I hope you will give it a try and experience what 100's of others have found to be a Refreshing kick to Am BCB DXing!! Am I having Fun????.....OH YEAH!! Radio used for todays DX was.....SONY SRF-T615 with 2 1/2 Foot Homebrew Tuneable Box Loop. ULR LOG TOTALS are now............602 Stations Heard. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ *************************************************************************************** 1340 WQSC Charleston, SC DEC/28/08 1600 EST EE FAIR ID by Male DJ at 1600 EST as "REAL TALK RADIO 1340 WQSC..Part of the Talk Radio Network". Re: ULTRALIGHT DX....ULR # 600 LOGGED and 601 and 602
Congratulations Rob,
You probably thought I was a little nuts a year
ago, when I claimed that the SRF-59 could hear real DX on the AM band. I'm
sure happy you at least gave it a try, and didn't stick it away somewhere.
600 ULR stations in one year is incredible, and your legendary
enthusiasm has created legions of new ULR fans throughout the world. Thanks
for your great accomplishments, and I'd have to say that your $16 SRF-59 is the
best investment I ever made :>)

Good Day DX'ers,
First of all, ROBERT, YOU CAN DO IT MAN! You have a cheerleading squad of at least 100, so....ra ra re, kickem in the knee, ra ra ras, kickem in the other knee! Thanks very much to Richard Allen and John Bryant for the tips on where to log a station from NC for a new state. This morning one of them finally rolled into the E-100 slider. 1110, WBT, Charlotte, NC, 1252-1305+ UTC, 12/28/08, Hrd in the null of KFAB, Omaha, signal faded up to a VG lvl shortly after 1300. Lcl ads, wx reports, and traffic report. Several nice IDs noted. Newstalk format. New state #33. And after that, I logged my 5th new Colorado station in the past 3 days. 1040, KCBE, Monument, CO, 1335-1402, 12/28/08, Religious tlk by a M ancr and some very pretty vcl mx selections such as "Navidad Es Amor." ULTRALIGHT DX......OK..It shouldn't be this hard!!!!
Hi Guys:
Well...after logging ULR # 599 yesterday morning..I figured by this morning......# 600 would be in the Bag and I could sit back and relax. NO CIGAR!! I DX'd 4 Hours at Sunset last night..at least another 4 Hours through the night..and about 3 Hours at Sunrise this morning...and didn't log a single station that was new!!?? I heard a lot of Good Stuff...even WJOE on 700 Khz again.......but no way could I find a NEW ONE!! A couple of times I got all excited thinking I had a NEW ONE...and it turned out to be a RELOG!! DRATS!! I even used various Radios thinking that might help...and I got the Wife to BUZZ all my Hair Off...thinking that a BALD HEAD might be Lucky!! All that did was make me look like Buddha!! AHHAHHHA....Where`s my Horseshoe..... I guess that's what makes this hobby Fun..never knowing what is gonna happen!! The previous 2 Days were Great, yesterday and this morning just plain STUNK!! Most likely when I do find # 600 I will log about 5 other new ones within an hour of hearing it!! I still have 4 days left til the end of the year ...so hopefully I can squeak one more out before then!! I will not surrender....but I sure hope I'm not in one of those 5 Days Droughts!! I'll be back at the dials this afternoon about 1400 EST.......hoping something better happens today..... The Propagation Gods are making me work for this!! 73...ROB. Robert S. Cajun Radio 1470
Kirk Allen <kirk74601@...>
Saludos Fellow DX'ers,
This morning's DX session brought in just one new ULR logging, but it was a fun one for me. I hrd this one on the E-100 slider plus the SAT. 1470, KLCL, Lake Charles, LA, 1300, 12/27, Apparently this sta must have switched to their daytime power of 5 kw because it appeared out of nowhere. I had been on the freq for about 10 minutes trying to ID an XE when this one came blasting in. Initially I hrd what sounded like a heavy-duty Cajun song in progress. M ancr w/ ID very shortly thereafter. "Broadcasting...on 1470, we're Cajun Radio, KLCL, Lake Charles, and 1290, Jennings." About that station on 1490- it's unlikely to be Lancaster because, as you said, Lancaster is not in the Laurel Highlands. new ULR loggings tonight in Ohio
Tim Davisson
Too bad I don't understand Spanish better...as there's stuff all
over the lower half of the AM dial (i.e.: something under WSB 750, under CKLW 800)...and a SS on 600kHz.....haven't a clue. One of them (I believe the 750 kept saying Chile...and Andes (as in Andes Mountains). Who the heck can figure that one out with just those two pieces of "information"). Any way...new ones today, all EST...on the SRF-59, 100% barefoot and unmodified: 1430 WENE/Endicott, NY...3:27pm with "Binhampton's sports station". 1360 WPPA/Pottsville, PA, 3:33pm. 1280 WHTK/Rochester, NY, 3:38pm, talk. 580 CFRA/Ottawa, ONT, dominate at 8:22pm, "news-talk 5-80". 690 CINF/Montreal, QUE, 8:35pm, FF news. 730 CKAC/Montreal, QUE, 8:38pm, FF talk. (the last 2 finally getting around to counting them). Am up to 270 ULR's heard. Some weeks I'll listen 4 or 5 hours total, some weeks not at all. Suppose if I did my totals would be closer to 400 or so. Being from the middle part of the country helps. I've noticed a lot of regional stuff is coming in about 2 or 3 in the afternoon...a bit earlier than usual...with local sunset at about 5:15pm. Stable "daytime, local conditions" last less and less total time during the winter..per usual. 73's, happy DXing, and Happy New Year, Tim, KD8GZ Norton, Ohio (near Akron) |

Here's my final ULR logs from Hermosa Beach. One valuable lesson, don't try a DXPedition from highly populated areas. The electrical noise is very high. Had to go outside to hear many of these. I don't how Saul does it in Toronto. Ended up with 56 total way short of my goal of 100.

Re: ICF-S5W, ICF-EX5
Hello Heatwave,
The ICF-EX5 is basically a Japanese-market upgrade
for the ICF-S5(W) series, adding double conversion and a synch detector (but not
an improved 455 kHz IF filter, or improved loopstick design).
The loopstick in the ICF-EX5 is indeed more
isolated away from the main circuit board, however, which may account for your
discovery of slightly better nulling ability than that of the ICF-S5W. All
of the modified portables here have gained a significant increase in
nulling ability, when a loopstick is mounted outside and above the radio's
cabinet. For example, the new Slider E100's can null out locals and
receive noontime daytime DX stations 10 kHz away, at distances of 150-200 miles
during the enhanced December conditions.
The tilted loopstick in the ICF-S5(W) series can
improve nulling ability in some cases, but Sony's placement of the
loopstick near the middle of the cabinet would tend to minimize this
advantage. My own impression is that Sony chose this loopstick position as
a matter of convenience, to avoid having the 4 main loopstick coil wires (and
the other 4 from the external antenna connector jack) interfere with the dial
string system (having the red and green LED's moving across the top of the
analog dial). When I designed the Slider loopstick for the ICF-S5W
(which ultimately was a DUD), I needed to thread the 4 loopstick Litz wires
through an empty screw hole in the center of the back cabinet, in order to
avoid snarling the dial string system. Sony probably placed the stock
loopstick in the middle of the cabinet, for the same reason.
