I was wondering (Gary...), My EX5 seems better at nulling, and a hair more selective than the S5W...is the EX5's ferrite bar further removed from the electeonics than the S5W? Is the EX5 bar horizontal (was there a reception related motivation for having the S5W bar non horizontal?

Final set of ULR logs from Southern California

Here's my final ULR logs from Hermosa Beach. One valuable lesson, don't try a DXPedition from highly populated areas. The electrical noise is very high. Had to go outside to hear many of these. I don't how Saul does it in Toronto. Ended up with 56 total way short of my goal of 100.

Re: ICF-S5W, ICF-EX5

Gary DeBock

Hello Heatwave,

The ICF-EX5 is basically a Japanese-market upgrade for the ICF-S5(W) series, adding double conversion and a synch detector (but not an improved 455 kHz IF filter, or improved loopstick design).

The loopstick in the ICF-EX5 is indeed more isolated away from the main circuit board, however, which may account for your discovery of slightly better nulling ability than that of the ICF-S5W.  All of the modified portables here have gained a significant increase in nulling ability, when a loopstick is mounted outside and above the radio's cabinet.  For example, the new Slider E100's can null out locals and receive noontime daytime DX stations 10 kHz away, at distances of 150-200 miles during the enhanced December conditions.

The tilted loopstick in the ICF-S5(W) series can improve nulling ability in some cases, but Sony's placement of the loopstick near the middle of the cabinet would tend to minimize this advantage.  My own impression is that Sony chose this loopstick position as a matter of convenience, to avoid having the 4 main loopstick coil wires (and the other 4 from the external antenna connector jack) interfere with the dial string system (having the red and green LED's moving across the top of the analog dial).  When I designed the Slider loopstick for the ICF-S5W (which ultimately was a DUD), I needed to thread the 4 loopstick Litz wires through an empty screw hole in the center of the back cabinet, in order to avoid snarling the dial string system.  Sony probably placed the stock loopstick in the middle of the cabinet, for the same reason.

ULTRALIGHT DX.......2 NEW ONES in past 2 days!!

robert ross

Hi Guys:

I hope everyone had a Good Day today and had Fun ....and Ate too
Much..and all the rest of the good stuff!! After 3 days of partying, and
eating...my body is just about ready to surrender!! When I married a
Christmas Day Birthday Girl on Dec/23 1983 (25 years Ago)...I had no idea
what kind of Havoc, having an Anniversary, the Wife's Birthday and
Christmas all at once would cause!! It wasn't so bad when I was a Young
Feller and in better health...but all this excitement is more than the Old
Bones can handle nowadays!! HAHAHA.....
Anyways...I think I survived it all for another year......won't know for
sure til the weekend after I've had time to recover.

In the midst of all this I did find a LITTLE Time to DX and was able to add
2 NEW ULR Stations to the Log. Both were heard at Sunset and both are also
NEW to the OVERALL LOG as well. Both of these New Ones are also GRAVEYARDERS...which brings the ULR GY TOTAL to 47 STATIONS HEARD.

Radio used was.......SONY SRF-T615 with 2 1/2 Foot Homebrew Tuneable Box Loop.

ULR LOG TOTALS are now........................593 Stations Heard

So I am now needing 7 more stations with 6 more days to go!! Help me Lord!!

Merry Christmas Everyone,

Since I wasn't able to get together with my son, daughter-in-law, and
grankids for Christmas, I had nothing to do with my time off except
tune around on the E-100. I experienced a first. 5 new stations came
rolling in this morning, and 4 of those were from Colorado, one of my
very favorite states. All times/dates in UTC per usual. All hrd on the
E-100 slider.

930, KRKY, Granby, CO, 1411-1420, 12/25, Hrd in null of semi-lcl WKY
(OK City). EZ/lite Christmas vcl mx played. Clear ID 1414 and ancd an
FM freq as well. G sig.

1360, KHNC, Johnstown, CO, 1433-1500+, 12/25, featured a highly
enthralling infomercial guarnteed to cure all ailments, even if they've
never been discovered before, ha ha. Just kidding. They were pushing
some kind of health product and was hosted by an alleged
Chiropractor..they refered to it as the "green herb"...I didn't think
that was legal to advertise...ahemm.

1460, KZNT, Colorado Springs, CO, 1503, 12/25, I believe this sta must
have switched from night to daytime power right after tune/in. The
station suddenly popped on with a huge signal and scared the heck out
of me! ID immediately after they became audible...good deal, that gave
me more time to tune around some more.

1090, KMXA, Aurora, CO, 1530-1559, 12/25, all SS lang pgm'g with IDs
and SS Christmas mx. G sig just like the above CO stations were this
morning.

1090, KEXS, Excelsior Springs, MO, 1600, 12/25, Started mixing it up w/
KMXA until this one became more audible. A Catholic radio net of some
kind was ancd. Nice ID 1600. One ID by a little girl (circa 5 years
old) was hrd, and was quite cute sounding.

(Hey Robert: Once you get freed up for some listening, don't forget to
come up for air now and then...good luck in hittin' 600...even if ya
don't, you're still way ahead of us I do believe!!)

That's it from here for now.
MERRY CHRISTMAS

Second Slider DT-200VX model

Gary DeBock

Hello Guys,

The DT-200VX has apparently been discontinued by Sangean, but a couple of these models will live on as souped-up DXing monsters.

Like the Eton E100 ultralight, the DT-200VX receives a phenomenal boost in sensitivity when a 7.5" Amidon ferrite bar-based  sliding coil loopstick is transplanted into the front end circuitry.  The Slider DT-200VX sensitivity is fully equal to that of the Slider E100's, which can run circles around many full-sized portables.

Unlike the Slider E100 project, however, it is not beginner-friendly.  The four Litz wire soldering connections on the RF circuit board include two that are extremely crammed, making it mandatory to use a soldering iron bus wire attachment, to avoid frying adjacent components.  For this reason, these DT-200VX Slider monsters are unlikely to proliferate, like the souped-up E100's.

The Slider loopsticks do not always provide a phenomenal sensitivity boost-- they have proven to be Duds in the SRF-39FP and ICF-S5W models, inducing a serious dose of necessary humility in the transplant tinkerer.  The DT-400W model should be another DXing monster, however.

73 and Merry Christmas to All,

     Gary DeBock

Re: #500 heard on an ULR

Kirk Allen <kirk74601@...>

Richard,

I just read the great news from you. CONGRATULATIONS AMIGO. I figured
you'd get that #500 within a day since you were sitting at 499
stations a couple evenings ago. It's quite encouraging to read about
DX'ers like you logging that large a number of stations on
ULR's...that gives me hope that one day I might hit that 500 mark. I
think I'll try to take my time getting to 500. Knowing myself the way
I do, I'm afraid I might get really bored with this if I get to the
point of not logging anything new after hours and hours of listening.
Like John B. posted, what's next? Good question. Oh well, I have a
long ways to go before I need to concern myself with that, ha ha.
Richard, thank you for all your help along this ULR journey. You're
truly an inspiration!!

Great work, Richard!!!

I never expected that anyone would get close to 500 stations! A wonderful
accomplishment. If you ever slow down enough to send Rob the appropriate
submittals, both you and Kirk have earned a slew of new awards.

I can't help but speculate "What happens next?" Is there a "ceiling," a
number of stations beyond which a person can only add one or two new ones
a month??? At that point, if there is a ceiling, whadda ya do??? Kirk and
I wimped out very early and have been piling up our station counts in the
Unlimited class.... we can shift over to Barefoot and start over doing a
much more difficult slog through the numbers.... but what happens then?
Are limits of "ten dollar radios" or crystal sets in our futures???

In any case, Richard, a Barefoot 500 has only been accomplished once
before, I believe. "What happens next?" is a great problem to have.

Merry Christmas to all!

Good job, Richard! 500 is quite the milestone. Personally, I've been
stuck at 449 stations, as I've been in a drought for the past two
weeks. Of course, DXing from Oklahoma has it's own unique challenges
compared to DXing from the coasts, especially for those foreign
catches- I'd love to snag Japan, although I have Croatia and Spain.

Onto 600! As for me, I'm shooting for my 500th station by March. But
no one is going to catch Rob Ross!

TP's FROM OREGON COAST 12/19-20, 2008: HIGHLY MODDED E100 MONSTER SLIDER:

normwclark <ultralightdx@...>

I finally got the opportunity to give my Guy Atkins highly-modded Eton
E100 a good tryout at Arch Cape on the Oregon coast when I stayed
several days at my sister's house there! On Friday morning (12/19) it
was snowing so I stayed indoors, and all my subsequent catches were
made in the front living room facing the ocean (great view, of course!).

Guy installed a CFJ455K5 Murata filter in the E100, mounted it on a
Slik tripod, and adapted a Stormwise 16.8" X 1.0" ferrite rod antenna
to the radio using a cool slider coil. The sensitivity of this radio
is surpassed only by its selectivity, and the tripod allows a
full-range of motion for such tricks as tilting of the antenna for the
last bit of nulling on a co-channel station. I am very "grateful" to
be alive and using this very, very capable DXer! Here is a quick
sampling of my log:

Way to Go Kirk Allen with # 400 Heard!!!

Hey Kirk..I knew you could do it!! 400 is a Piece of Cake eh??!! HAHAHHAA.....Good luck as you press on to # 500!!

I'm still holding out hope that I can hit # 600 by the end of the year (8 Days Left)...but it's looking a little Glum lately...nothing NEW heard in the last 2 Days....and I've spent a lot of time at the dials!! I really wanna hit 600 just to round out the first year of ULR DXing with an Even Number......but with My Wife's Birthday Party tomorrow night...and Christmas the next day...and my 25th Wedding Anniversary Party a little earlier tonight..I am a little strapped for time. I'll try to do some DXing thru the night if I can stay awake...and at Sunrise...but Sunset Skip DX Time ain't looking too good the next few days!!

Oh well...If I make it...I make it!! We'll see what happens!! A couple of Good DX sessions could change the whole scenario!! I am currently sitting at 589 Stations Heard...so I need 11 Stations in 8 Days........

Hey Kirk...now that you've heard your 400.......Maybe you can lend me a few if you hear any more New Ones!! HAHAHA...

Merry Christmas everyone...and Happy ULR DXing in the New Year. I'll keep everyone apprised of any new developments in my Quest to 600.......

Heck...Kirk may get there BEFORE I do!!

External Speaker availability for ULRs

Joseph Miller <radiodxer2000@...>

While carousing around from store to store today, I saw an Universal Stereo Speaker by Gigaware at one of the area Radio Shacks, part number 40-222 and which is intended for MP3 players. What got me was the fine print reading "or any other audio device that has 1/8" [3.5 mm] headphone jack".

Sounded great in theory, but practicality wins every time. For starters, there is a miniture amplifier in said unit requiring an AA battery, and a seperate ON-OFF switch. The jack itself actually slides, so it is possible to line up the speaker with whatever device it is connected to. However, the drawback is that it causes RFI probably due to it's very close positioning to the internal ferrite bar antenna.

Fortunately, the salesperson ta Radio Shack said that it could be returned if it doesn't work. I thought I would have enjoyed this miniature speaker as I really don't care for headphones, but it's going back.

Hello Richard,

     Thanks for your generous comments.

Actually, except for a little ULR promotional work I enjoyed doing a year ago, it's been guys like you, John Bryant, Kirk Allen, Allen Willie, Rob Ross, Kevin Schanilec, John Cereghin and a multitude of other enthusiastic DXers carrying the Ultralight Radio cause forward, recently.  You guys are a phenomenal group, and I deeply appreciate the chance to watch the ULR group continue to boom, even if I spend most of my recent time tinkering with some bizarre new Slider loopstick transplants.  Congratulations on #500, Richard, and have a great Christmas!

A very Merry Christmas to Kirk,John and Richard as well as to all on
the list.It will be just my wife and myself for Christmas day.But i
will get to spend Christmas eve with my brother that lives here in
Maryville. That,s for the first time in a long time.
re Quebec:
I have been hearing a French language station here in east Tennessee on
690 that is probably Quebec in spite of WLW IBOC.

First of all Congratulations to Kirk Allen on logging his 400th
station on Ultralights. That's an amazing accomplishment Kirk, I'm
sitting  at just over 400 stations myself but you managed the feat
in a lot less time than I did. Well Done !

Secondly I would like to  wish everyone  a very Merry Christmas and
Happy Holidays. I'm hoping to get back  into some serious Dxing with
the Ultralights after Christmas winds down.

The internet radio stations that we run and operate from
St. John's  have kept us busy here with temorary format change on one
to all Christmas music and the other switching to an adult
comtemporary format in the new year from 70's and 80' soft rock.

Our all - Christmas station hit a record today as we now have had
listeners from 130 countries since  it began Nov 22

Wish I could  log that many countries on  the Ultralights !!!!

Best of the Season to all and Good Dx

Ho Ho Ho,

I'm happy to report station #400 made its way into my headphones
this
morning. About a month ago when I nailed #300, Rob Ross told me
that
now I could shoot for 400 by the end of the year. I truly didn't
believe I could pull it off. Well...somehow it happened anyway
despite my thinking.

900, KPYN, Atlanta, TX, 1305, 12/23, faded up to a good lvl abt a
minute before the ID by a southern accented M ancr...and I DO mean
Southern with a capital S! Ancd several phone numbers to call for
their trading post pgm (area code 903). Lcl wx, high today of 61
degrees...wow, that sounds good. Birthday greetings announced to
what
I speculate might have been the entire population of Atlanta, ha
ha.
By the way, Atlanta is in the extreme NE corner of TX, very close
to
both AR and LA.

I'd like to send my best wishes to everyone here for a Merry
Christmas and a prosperous and Happy New Year. Here's to 2008, it's
been a good year. I hadn't had this much radio fun in about 15
years.
Thank you to all who participate here sharing their tech insight
and
DX saavy.
Merry Christmas,
