Hi Kirk,

Thank you for the kind words. Radio Corporacion has long seemed to make it here to Memphis with decent signal at times, over-riding Monroe, LA and Mexico regulars, as I have logged them many times since the mid-80's. Perhaps it is only because their ~160 Hz het is really noticeable and when it starts booming in is a good indicator of an impending opening.

Just one new station out of four that I managed to log in the last day
that's really worth mentioning:

660, XEEY, Aguascalientes, Mexico, 1248-1315, 12/17/08, Naturally @
1300 the sig faded below a copiable lvl. They made it up to me by
announcing several "...la Consentida.." This sta was mixing with
another presumed XE right at first, but it gradually took total
control of 660. Terribly messy freq this morning.

Very nice idea you have there! Sometimes I too have issue with capacitance from my fingers, and I think this concept can also work very well with my version of the Slider. Now to pick up some pvc pipe and felt pads tomorrow...

Hey Richard:

Of the 4 that I have purchased, two SRF-59's were well-aligned out of the
gate, so you're running about average. The SRF-39s have virtually always
been properly aligned - sounds like Sony changed their QA procedures at
some point. I think you probably had a bad one for the first one - I had
a bad one that was not only much less sensitive, but also worse in the
nulling department. I allowed it to have a dignified burial in the
landfill.

My take on the SRF-59's prowess in nulling is that it appears to come from
the fact that the ferrite is up and away from the circuit board which
would otherwise distort the RF field and/or reflect signal into the
ferrite. If you have a picture of the Prison SRF-39, you can see that
there ain't much circuitry in the top where the antenna is - nice design
by Sony. Other models (the Sangeans, etc.) have the ferrite a lot closer
to the circuit board, speaker, etc., which degrades the nulls. Larger
portables like the Sony S5W have the ferrite smack in the middle of
everything, and so the nulls aren't as good as on the mightly little SRF.

Your new SRF-59 sounds like a keeper!

My 59 died on mw...went to CCity, and got a new one. I think I was
lucky...must be well aligned as it is hot across the mw range. What
surprised me is that it appears to be even better at nulling than what I
remember of myearlier samples (59's). Is there varience in nullability
from one unit to another? Also, what is it that makes a 59 so good at
nulling? Other ulr's similar in size are not nearly as good. My larger
radios are not as good in that capacity either.

Tonight is the first real chance I have had to do much listening on the newly built E100 Slider. When tuning up the band from 530 kHz a little after 0300 UTC, I noticed a very strong, low frequency het on 540 kHz from presumed perennial off-frequency Radio Corporacion in Managua, Nicaragua (usually around 540.16 kHz). I tuned back right before the bottom of the hour to find Radio Corporacion dominant on the frequency with the ending of a lively studio talk program, including one high pitched guy with a really goofy laugh. Then a few clear Radio Corporacion ID's into what sounded like a string of program promos, including clear mentions of Pancho Madrigal, a program I have heard on this station a few times in the past. Station faded back down at 0335m and then another strong peak at 0350 with ballads and a male announcer with TC's and mentions of Managua between songs. This is my first official Ultralight log!

Excellent report, Gary!

I was just going to write to you suggesting that, after you complete the 2009 Winter Shootout, you try the Slider mod on a DT-400VX. Although the lack of the e100s 1 kHz resolution tuning might inhibit the DT-400 as a transoceanic DX machine, a "Slider 400" might be a superb domestic DX machine, with or maybe even without an IF Filter mod.

I've been spending a lot of time domestic DXing in the last three weeks and I'm beginning to conclude that I like the Slider e100 with a stock filter about as well as one with the Murata filter upgrade for domestic DXing. With the Murata filter, it is a must to off-tune one kHz to get the higher audio frequencies so necessary when trying to sort out a domestic furball... the standard filter seems to operate quite well in those circumstances.  Of course, when trying for DX between the 9 and 10 kHz. spacing worlds, the Murata remains the ONLY way to go, IMHO.

In either case, I look forward to The Maestro trying a "Slider 400"  It could be wonderful!

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to upgrade selectivity in these units, primarily due to the unusual IF of around 50 kHz.  Consequently, as TP-DXing receivers, they fall far short of the E100 sliders, and their great sensitivity is useful only on relatively clear frequencies, or when the loopstick's superior nulling ability can be used to advantage.  During DU DXing in the summer, for example, the E100 slider model could receive 11 DU's from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga, while the Amidon SRF-39FP could receive only 1 (5AN-891, on a completely clear frequency).
 
     The SRF-59/39FP analog series has a smaller loopstick coil which is used for aligning the 600 kHz peak position, and theoretically this coil can be also used as a "slider," to peak frequencies other than 600 kHz (like in the E100 slider design).  Unfortunately, the SRF-39FP smaller loopstick coil behaves far differently than the E100 coil when it is shifted, making an SRF-39FP "slider" system marginal at best.
 
     In the E100 slider system, shifting the coil a very slight amount will provide a huge difference in sensitivity, making the bar-graph signal strength meter rise from nothing to maximum level within a tiny fraction of an inch.  On the SRF-39FP, the peak is nowhere near as sharp, but sounds more like a change in audio, as the coil is shifted as much as half an inch.  The shifting of the coil on the SRF-39FP away from the 600 kHz peak also seems to induce spurious reception of whistles and shortwave signals, apparently upsetting the alignment of the analog radio.  The marginal improvement in sensitivity on higher frequencies is more than outweighed by the negative side effects, no doubt due to the unique design of the RF front end inside the CXA1129N IC chip.
 
     Certain other digital ultralights like the DT-200VX and the DT-400W have a loopstick quite similar to that of the E100, in which the coil(s) are peaked (at 600 kHz) very close to the end of the ferrite bar on the stock unit, and which have extremely sharp peaks over a very narrow range.  These designs can be expected to behave like that of the E100 slider, when an Amidon ferrite bar having a movable coil of 40/44 Litz wire is transplanted into the circuitry (a nice winter project!).

My 59 died on mw...went to CCity, and got a new one. I think I was lucky...must be well aligned as it is hot across the mw range.      Thanks for your comments.  The SRF-39FP Slider project was probably irrelevant anyway, since until we can find a way to upgrade selectivity in the Sony analog units, these highly sensitive Amidon SRF-39FP's will be useful only on relatively clear frequencies-- a poor choice, compared to the fully-modified E100's.
 
     A DT-400W Slider project is definitely planned here for the winter, in which piggybacked 40/44 Litz wire coils are shifted along a Type 61 Amidon 7.5" ferrite bar.  My guess is that it will equal the E100 Sliders in sensitivity, although it's doubtful that we can find any 450 kHz IF filter that will provide a selectivity upgrade to compare with the phenomenal 455 kHz Murata filters in the fully-modified E100's.  There are some modest 450 kHz filters that Guy has tried in the DT-200VX (and a 450 kHz DT-400W filter project posted on dxer.ca) that might at least provide a moderate selectivity boost, in addition to the presumed massive sensitivity boost provided by slider loopstick.  Without 1 kHz tuning resolution, the fully-modified DT-400W's will probably not compete seriously with the Monster E100's, but they should at least be interesting enough to keep fanatical tinkerers from complaining about the bad TP conditions during the winter doldrums :>)
 
     John, I still have a "Slider-only" E100 here, and really enjoy using it during domestic DX, and on daytime band scans in unfamiliar locations.  The Slider-only E100 would be a real blast for domestic DXers, combining great sensitivity with outstanding audio fidelity.  Unless the user is a hard-core transoceanic DX chaser (or an urban dweller with many troublesome locals), it may well be the ideal hot-rodded Ultralight.

the nearby states ,so far,than with the distant other side of the
state.

1140", so it took a while to get enough info to say this was the
station. Finally at 0428 they gave a phone number to call during a
promo listing area code 403 which matches.

1140, UNID XE, 0237-0310, 12/16, Another XE station was here mixing
with XEMR. It was hard to tell which of the stations I was hearing
at
any given time because they were, at times, of equal strength. I
hrd
some references to what I think was a slogan "...11-40..." I really
think it was XETE, Tehuacan, Pueblo but I'm not certain. I THINK it
was them that played some really decent pop mx and even one by
Shania
Twain with her great song, "Still the One."

690, XERG, Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, 0131-0230, 12/16, first started
checking this freq at 0007 UTC. Many ments of Monterrey and Nuevo
Leon. Taking phone calls in an all talk format when I listened.
Finally hrd a reference to "RG 6-90". At times mixing with what I
think was XEN. Surprisingly this one was dominant by 0200. XE #48

640, WCRV, Collierville, TN, 2230-2245, 12/15, hrd an entertaining
black preacher with a good sense of humor. I definitely got some
chuckles from this guy, short sta promo hrd. Night cut in power at
2245, and not heard after that.

1320, KELO, Souix Falls, SD, 2230-2240, 12/15, talk show, IDs hrd
2236.

1050, KLOH, Pipestone, MN, 2218-2230, 12/15, variety of mx played
from C&W to Christmas songs. ID 2222.

Hi John,

Thanks for the kind words! I was wracking my brain trying to think of a good way to mount the ferrite rod the the stand while wandering around the hardware store and spotted those "brackets". It might be this weekend before I can make it back up there and find out what in the heck these things are called and what they are used for. One thing I do remember is that they were less than a dollar each! I'll post an update as soon as I have the info. I really am impressed how well they support the ferrite rod, and with plenty of clearance above the edge of the base. I am curious to hear what other ideas you have for them...

Regarding the stand and the turntable, the back verticle support of the stand fits in the grooves of the turntable perfectly and keeps the stand oriented without having to attach the stand in any way.

Thank you for the ideas and suggestions. I will definitely look at the Radio Shack terminal blocks. As I would like to be able to break the entire thing down, I believe I will look for some nylon screws to attach the brackets and get rid of as much metal as possible. I will post updated photos and description when further progress is made.

Eventually, somebody has GOT to make an SRF-39FP Slider on one of those gorgeous transparent Universal mini-stands.... an artistic high point, for sure.

Brandon, that thing looks so good that I'm tempted to make one myself, just to look at.... *yours has the major advantage over my design of not requiring a table saw and woodworking.*.... much more doable for many folks.... all you need is a 1/4" electric drill and Superglue. BRAVO! The only advantage of mine is that the base and mounting board come apart for transportation or storage... a real advantage for a few folks, but meaningless to most.

Do let us know the details of the white brackets as soon as is convenient.... I've got other plans for those puppies :>)

Slider and mount over the weekend. The radio mounted on Universal Radio
"Mini Translucent Mount" and C.Craine "AM Radio Turntable". The ferrite
rod is mounted on two plastic brackets that I found at the hardware

and see what these things are actually named. I mounted two narrow
lengths of 1/2" i.d. plastic tubing to the white brackets using super
glue and it works perfectly to hold the rod securely in place. The two
screws mounted above the radio were for a quick connect for the coil,
but I think I will try another method. Still to be added is the external
antenna pickup coil along with a BNC jack mount on the back of the
stand. I also have plans for adding heavy duty rubber feet to the
turntable, some sort of setting circle marked in 1° increments, along
with mounting a small compass to aid in proper orientation. After new
years the radio is off to Steve for the filter mod.

This mount was a breeze to put together once I found the white brackets
to hold the ferrite rod and then figured out attaching short length of
tube inside the semi-circle to actually mount the rod through. My
initial thoughts were to hot glue the rod to the mount, but this method
is worlds better. And if one wanted to eliminate as much metal as
possible, the metals screws to bolt the ferrite rod mount brackets to
the stand could easily be replaced with superglue.
