Two New Ones at Sunset Tonight

John Cereghin <jcereghin@...>

DX from all over tonight- new stations from Alabama and Vermont for
the UL log:

850 WXJC Birmingham AL, 1735, "850 The Truth" and "This is the
Crawford Broadcasting Company", USA News at 1730, sounded like a local
talk show. New station overall and a new UL station.

620 WVMT Burlington VT, "AM 620, WVMT, Burlington, Plattsburgh", AP
News (assumed) at 1800. New UL station.

Both heard on the DT-400W barefoot. Ultralight totals now at 445
stations.

Kirk,

You do have the drop on me in years (I'm 44), but I've been a DXer
since 1976, so that might earn me a few brownie points!

My addiction to these little radios got the best of me last

it's cold outdoors, I camped out here in the apartment. Here's the
new ones that surfaced here. All times/dates in UTC, and all loggings

1400, KTEM, Temple, TX, 0533 UTC, hrd as a 'pop up' while listening

1420, KGNB, New Braunfels, TX, 0859, talk show, possibly Coast to
Coast. ID around 0910.

1420, WOC, Davenport, IA, 0956, regional nx with mentions of several
towns in IA, 2 IDs hrd, back to a tlk show after 1036.

1060, WRHS, Rochelle, IL, 1200, the radio god smiled upon my pointed
lil' head and helped me hear this station's ID right after t/in. Very
clear ID, and then they too went back out into the ether.

1010, KTNZ, Amarillo, TX, 1327, mostly yak by a M ancr, some ads and
then ID at 1331. Their format is C&W, but they didn't hold in here
long enough to tell. (ULR #358)

Tips for Winding the E100 Slider Coil

Gary DeBock

Hello Guys,

As most of you are aware, a new type of AM loopstick was developed this summer for use in the E100 Ultralight and other single-coil designs, in which the loopstick coil is shifted by the DXer to peak each incoming signal on its own frequency. This simple innovation makes a huge difference in the sensitivity of the radio on all AM frequencies, making it competitive or superior to all of the most popular portables in AM-DXing history.

For those DXers wishing to construct a Slider loopstick for their E100 or other portables, one of the challenges is winding a coil of 40/44 Litz wire that will slide easily on a type 61 Amidon 7.5" ferrite bar, but not "too easily."  The early designers of Slider loopsticks (John Bryant and I) faced this problem, and we both developed our own solutions.

Although John certainly has his own procedure, my own trick is to wind the coils on a form of waterproof tape, wrapped tightly around the most slippery half-inch diameter material I could find:  the long, half-inch shank of a router bit.  In order to ensure that the coil will be very slightly larger than .5" in diameter, I place a 3" long, 1/16" wide strip of a cut up credit card lengthwise on the router bit shank, before winding the coil.  This strip of the credit card is pulled out after winding the coil, to ensure that the coil will easily slide off the router bit shank.  If all goes well, the coil will slide easily, but not too easily, on the half-inch diameter Amidon ferrite bar.

Should the coil slide too easily, it is a simple matter to cut thin strips of the waterproof tape and place them lengthwise inside the coil (adhesive side out), until the coil "drag" is ideal.  The Type 61 Amidon ferrite bars also have slight ridges lengthwise from end to end, which allows the DXer to rotate the coil slightly to find the ideal "drag" position (as long as the pre-wound coil is approximately correct in inner diameter).  Good luck!

Re: New Grundig AN-200 Mediumwave Antenna

Steve/Kirk:

I also had John's Tecsun loop for a spell before sending it on to Kirk,
and I found it to be roughly the equivalent of the Terk Loop, at least
from a passive antenna perspective. The Tecsun seemed to tune a little
sharper, but not by much.

However, the signal coming off of the Terk's output jack was significantly
higher, so I wouldn't recommend the Grundig/Tecsun loop if you're going to
hardwire it to a receiver's antenna jack.

I thought the Tecsun looked much cooler, but the center-mounted tuning of
the Terk was much more convenient. In all, I think the Terk is the better
product, and it's noticeably cheaper than the Grundig/Tecsun.

but conditions here lately seem rather poor overall. I've not been
able to listen much during the SR hours and none during the SS prime
time, so maybe I'm just missing the productive hours. When you're in
a drought like this, ONE new station is cause for celebration, hi hi.
The station below I heard 20 khz away from the lcl here, WBBZ, 1230.
WBBZ is located about 4 BLOCKS from here, so hearing much around 1230
is usually a major challenge for me. The sta below I hrd w/ the
broken E-100 slider.

1210, KBUR, San Juan, TX, 0809-0835 UTC, 12/10. Sounded like an
automated station w/ pgm'g in Spanish. This is a Christian station w/
frequent "Radio Cristiana" IDs and variations of that, none of which
I could copy every word of. Rapid fades and LONG fade outs lasting 2-
6 minutes. They were playing mostly Christmas mx in SS. Situated a
little south of McAllen, San Juan is about as far south as one can go
in TX before reaching the border with Mexico.

I hope you guys are doing better than me for logging new stations

Re: Eton E100 Serial Number Variations

Hello James,

Your E100 is undoubtedly suitable for modification, and would follow the guidelines for the E10-0505xxxxxx series.  The only E100 serial numbers positively identified by the enthusiast group as unsuitable for modification are the E10-0709xxxxxx series.  Good luck in Ultralight DX this winter!

Eton E100 Serial Number Variations

Gary DeBock

Hello Guys,

With the growing popularity of the new Eton E100 modifications (Slider loopstick and Murata CFJ455K5 IF filter), hobbyists should be advised that there are certain E100 variants that are not suitable for either modification.  Those directly involved in designing or performing the modifications (John Bryant, Guy Atkins, Steve Ratzlaff and myself) have been aware of this for some time, but new E100 purchasers should check their unit's serial number, before planning or ordering any modification.

Any E100 with a serial number of the E10-0709xxxxxx series is NOT compatible with either the Slider loopstick or the Murata IF filter modification.  These units have a redesigned loopstick among other major changes, and the AM performance is noticeably inferior to the other E100 variants.  Photos of the RF circuit board, loopstick and logo of these "non-standard" units have been posted by John Bryant on the ultralightdx Yahoo group site.  If you have one of these units, the popular modifications are not possible, and they should not be sent to Steve Ratzlaff for filter jobs, or to any volunteers making Slider loopsticks..

Most of the E100's currently owned by DXers (and reportedly all of the E100's still available from Durham Radio in Canada) are of the type suitable for modification.  These generally are either the E10-0704xxxxxx series, or the E10-0505xxxxxx series.  Both of these groups are fully suitable for modifications, and both work equally well as modified DX chasers.  The loopstick coils of these two groups have slight variations, however, which result from a slightly different tuning capacitor in the variants.

The E10-0704xxxxxx series E100's have more turns of Litz wire in the stock loopstick coil, and perform best with a Slider loopstick coil of approximately 63 turns of 40/44 Litz wire.  The E10-0505xxxxxx series have fewer turns of Litz wire in the stock coil, and can operate well with a Slider loopstick coil of 51 turns, although they will still function well with a coil of 63 turns (although the coil will slightly extend over the edge of the bar while tuning some very high band frequencies).  Detailed testing here has not revealed any variation in sensitivity between a 63 turn Slider coil or a 51 turn coil in the E10-0505xxxxxx variants.

The modifications themselves work extremely well in boosting up the E100's sensitivity and selectivity, and in combination they are phenomenal in performance.  Before planning or ordering material for modifications, however, please ensure that your E100's are of the acceptable type, and can actually be transformed into legendary DX chasers.
