Carl DeWhitt
--- I have been ULR dxing with one of my SRF-59,s + my e-100 since i
moved here to Tennesee.I plan to get my other SRF-59 out along with my SRF-M37V and M37W in my quest to greatly improve my station totals. I concur with Rob that the sky may be the limit on ULR dxing. There will always be something new to log because their will be new stations to come on the air and others will go dark or change antenna patterns or power levels. That will open new dx oppurtunities on their respective frequencies or on adjacent channels. One thing that might help is to make yourself a list of northern indicator stations which are normally heard from your north. If a aurora occurs,it can sometimes be severe enough to wipe out all or most stations to your north and reveal stations to your south not normally heard.Once,i noticed the effects of an aurora when i lived in Oklahoma. It was in February and WHAS 840 Louisville,Ky. was weakened to the point where it was easily nullable revealing Radio Nacional de Panama.Guatemala on 1210 and some others were heard this same night as i recall. In summary,a radio effecting aurora can be a good oppurtunity to log new ones.I think they are most likely to occur around the Spring and Autumnal equinoxes.Any one else here have any experience dxing mw during an aurora ? 73 and good dx. Re: How Many ULR Loggings are Possible?????
w2gjw <w2gjw@...>
Robert,
Firstly, my congratulations on you logging 602 stations using ULRs. That's a very impressive feat in itself, let alone when using hi-end table top receivers. I truly admire your dedication and perseverance to a task such as this, and you're absolutely correct saying time and location means everything in this hobby. Lets also not forget good propagation! I don't think I'd ever be able to log that many stations using an ULR, at least not from this poor location. I live just miles north of many of the hi-power towers for the NYC stations. It's taken me decades to log my near 800 station count from this location here in northern NJ. My second problem is the lack of time to devote to this great hobby. Never-the-less, you've been such a a great inspiration to the ULR DX hobby and I for one have enjoyed reading all your posts. My suggestion to you is don't stop now! Keep logging new ones! It'll be interesting to see just how many you can log and I have no doubt that you'll be able to snag new ones every now and then while your total continues to grow. Why not shoot for 1000 stations as your next target point? Thanks so much for your contributions to the ULR hobby. People such as yourself, Colin, Gary and the others have made this a most enjoyable and most importantly FUN addition to the MW DX-ing community!! Happy New Year to all and good luck with your new loggings! 73- Good DX! Gary Wilt- W2GJW NRC Webmaster Wood Ridge, NJ FN20wu |

How Many ULR Loggings are Possible?
Rob and Nick, Rob's discussion is downright profound, and should be read by all ULR enthusiasts! Of course, we all have different DXing goals, and reasons why we enjoy using these little radios. 600 ULR stations received in one year is phenomenal from any location, but from the west coast... well, it's about as likely as receiving WOON-1240 (or maybe MOON-1240 :>) To be honest, Rob has taken the ULR focus into a direction that I never would have considered, since from the beginning, my own ULR interest has been receiving TP's on these tiny wonders-- an absolutely thrilling experience. Catching the tail end of the 2007 fall season with my humble stock SRF-59, I managed to log 3 of them (JOAK-594, JOIB-747, and HLCA-972), before the band went into the winter hibernation period in December (which we are now experiencing again, one year later). Greatly missing the TP's (and having some moderate Navy technical experience), a fascinating challenge developed-- no doubt equally fascinating to Rob's multiple station challenge-- I wanted to make the ULR radios ultra-competitive for TP reception! Yes, make them, ultra-sensitive, ultra-selective and ultra-effective for transoceanic DXing... so that they could outperform even the full-sized stock portables like the ICF-2010 and E1. This challenging goal was probably equally daunting to Rob's goal of logging many hundreds of stations in one year-- and equally fascinating. Along the way, some outstanding technicians like John Bryant, Guy Atkins and Steve Ratzlaff joined in-- as we pursued the common goal of creating an Ultralight radio with unprecedented 9 kHz-split DX capability. I had a lot of "education" along the way-- SRF-39FP loopstick transplants that boosted sensitivity but degraded selectivity, vintage ferrite loopsticks that needed to be retired, etc. But eventually, working together, we found the perfect way to combine extreme sensitivity with extreme selectivity in a modified Ultralight (with extreme nulling ability as a bonus). The Slider loopstick E100's (with the Murata CFJ455K5 IF filter) are now astonishing ever DXer who tries one out-- and like Rob, I can truthfully say that this year has provided great Ultralight radio thrills for me, for John Bryant, and many other TP DXers. We all have differing reasons for enjoying these tiny wonders, but like Rob eloquently wrote, we all have one great thing in common-- FUN! It's a total blast to hold a tiny modified E100 in your hand, and receive 5AN-891 in Adelaide, Australia (8,230 miles from Grayland). It's equally fun for Allen Willie to log new European, African and Asian countries on his stock SRF-M37V, or John Bryant to log multiple Aussies and Kiwis with his E100, assisted by a Wellbrook array. Even stock SRF-59 DXing is alive and well, despite the fact that lazier DXers (like yours truly) have bailed out :>) So in addition to thanking Rob again for his phenomenal accomplishments, I would like to thank all of you for setting the standard in AM-DXing fun this past year, and for giving this hobby a huge enthusiasm boost. Our best days are yet to come, and 2009 looks like an ultra-exciting year for our booming niche group. 73 and Best Wishes, Gary DeBock In a message dated 12/30/2008 11:34:04 A.M. Your basic DXing technique is universally applicable (you don't hear 'em if the radio isn't switched on; a couple of hundred brand new stations in a single year after many years of DXing attests to that), but your observations concerning regional "spotlights" certainly bear repeating as well. How Many ULR Loggings are Possible?????
Hi Guys:
After logging # 602 I have found myself in another Drought...not hearing anything New on ULRs for the last 2 Days!! Several people have asked the Million Dollar Question....Is there a limit to how many stations can be logged using ULR Radios??? Will we eventually hit a Brick Wall that will cause us to give up and abandon the ULR cause?? Interesting question......and I have asked myself the very same question. When I began ULR DX'ing back in Jan/08......I thought it would be cool to hear 100 Stations on my New SRF-59. After a week and over 100 Loggings....I figured with a Lot of work ...I could most likely Log 300. ( That took the rest of the month!!) I surely never imagined that 300 in a month would be possible. The trek continued........it started to slow down a bit....but soon enough I had 400 then 500 and now 600 Stations in the Log!! The Last 100 from 500 to 600 took about 3 Months...so you can see that it's starting to become more of a challenge with each new station heard. However...rather than have that Discourage me....it gives me more desire to try and hit # 700...and beyond. Now we're actually getting to the stage where I'm not just turning on the Radio and listening for New Ones...I actually have to work at it....use various strategies......use propagation to my advantage ...and rely on other things like External Antennas, Filters, and of course Lady Luck!! Being in the right place at the right time has a lot to do with it........so it only makes sense that if you spend a lot of time at the dials.....you will hear a lot of stations. Listening at different times of the day and night are factors that will add to your totals. Don't forget as well that no 2 Days are alike (Except for the ones where you hear nothing!! HAHHA). Sometimes Sunset Skip favours the South , other times it's the West, other times stations seem to be coming in from all directions!! Some days the GraveYard freqs are totally Jammed...and nothing can be sifted out of the Mud.....other days the Stations seem to jump right out at you. What I am finding lately is that I am NOT hearing NEW ONES every day any more...but they seem to be coming in bunches....nothing for 2 Days....then 3 or 4 stations in 10 minutes!! I am also seeing a lot more Regional Stuff being heard....like last night I was hearing everything from the Philadelphia, New Jersey, NYC area . Sometimes if I hear Grand Rapids, Michigan on 1230 Khz....I will also hear them on 1340 Khz as well. I know the propagation for AM BCB is not like FM Radio...but at times what you hear on AM tends to have that FM TROPO Feel to it. Stuff from a particular area is all over the band. I think a real important factor now aside from any skills I may have picked up along the way is an element of LUCK!! Somedays will be Poor no matter what you do....whole others will be Excellent in spite of anything you may do wrong. It all comes down to being there when it happens. Keeping an eye on the tips from the members of the various reflectors will help add New Ones to your Totals. I have logged a pile of New Ones thanks to someone even 500 Miles away advising they were hearing something Unusual like a Station on Late, or a Station Testing. We have to use the expertise of others to help in our quest. Now back to the Million Dollar Question........do I think there is a LIMIT as to how many stations can be heard on a ULR Radio?? No....There is no limit, as long as we are patient, never give up and use all the tools we have at our disposal. I believe there is NO LIMIT because even though I have logged 1200 Stations OVERALL on the BCB in 35 Years, I have already logged 600 , or half as many in my first year with an ULR. Also...of those 600 Heard.....200 of those were New to the OVERALL Log as well. How may people with over 1000 Stations Heard can say they have Logged 200 NEW ONES to their Overall log in the past year??? My guess is NOT MANY!! One of the reasons I was not hearing many new stations for the Overall Log was it was just not fun fighting through all the noise, QRM, and Crud on the Band the last few years. Since obtaining the ULR's I have found those obstacles much less of a problem ...and therefore am enjoying myself much more. When something is FUN....you tend to stick with it! Oh yes...things are going to slow down substantially.......but I don't think they will ever dry up as far as ULR DX'ing goes. It's gonna get a lot tougher....but somethinjg I am finding now is that when I do log a New One.....it is usually a GOOD Logging....either a Low Power Station, A GraveYarder....or something FAR AWAY!! I think I have pretty much logged most of the close in stuff, and all of the easy stuff. You know something else....everyone is in the Hobby for different Reasons....be it Diehard DX'ers, Casual Listeners, Live Sports Aficionados, QSL'ers, or Technical Geeks!!! (No Offense Gary, John and Guy!!) HAHHAA..... Friendly competition is something that spurs some of us on the ACHIEVE just a little more. As I passed the 600 mark in URL Stations Heard......there is a healthy group of ULR DX'ers that have either reached the 500 Mark....or are making a surge towards it. As they motor along logging more and more stations each and every day....I see them in the Rear View Mirror...and it's only a matter of time before one of them takes the lead....and in turn takes the ULR Hobby to the next level. I hope that my efforts to hear Stations on the ULR Radios has given others the desire to try it out....and in turn spread some of their enthusiasm on New ULR Dx'ers!! I'm sure Gary Debock sometimes scratches his head and says.."Oh My God...what kind of a monster have I created here!!" HAHAHAA.....It's a Happy Monster Gary...sort of like "Milton the Monster"....for those Old enough to remember this 1960's Cartoon!! My "Thing" with ULR's is DXing and Logging Stations.....I'm not much of a TECHIE.......Guys Like Gary, John, Guy, Steve and a Bunch of the others out on the Left Coast are the Experts in that department. I need to thank them for spending countless hours attempting...and succeeding in making the ULRs a Lot better for me to DX with!! Without the Knowledge and Practical Skills of these guys.....I would be equipped a little less to battle the Propagation Gods!! Finally for all those ULR DX'ers that are Stuck at 200 or 300 or 400 and think things will eventually dry up making it impossible to hear new stations..FEAR NOT. I really do not believe there is any limit or magic number that can be heard before it's all over!! Just as the Long Distance Boys have proven that there is NO LIMIT in Distance that can be heard....Spare the circumference of the globe!! Press on .....and remember the most important aspect of ULR DX'ing is not how many we can hear....or how far away they are, or what they are playing when we hear them.....the most important aspect is HAVING FUN!! I truly believe that is what has brought ULR DXing to where it is today...and where it's going to be in years to come!! HAPPY ULR YEAR TO ALL ...... 73...ROB Robert S. Durham Radio Runs Out of Eton E100's
Hello Guys,
Russ Johnson advised me this morning that Durham
Radio of Whitby, Ontario has sold out their stock of the discontinued Eton
E100, and that they will no longer be available. Their web site confirms
this. Durham Radio has sold a great number of these NOS E100's to the Ultralight
Radio AM-DXing group at the special price of $44.93 (plus shipping), but
unfortunately hobbyists desiring to purchase these outstanding compact
models will now need to track one down from other sources (at a much higher
price).
The Eton E100 was the subject of intensive
hoobyist modifications for sensitivity and selectivity improvements recently,
making it an extremely capable AM-DXing receiver. A new Slider loopstick
was combined with a Murata CFJ455K5 premium IF filter, giving it
unprecedented 9-kHz split transoceanic DX performance among compact
portables.
If you would still like to purchase this superb
model, it is recommended that you act without delay to secure one from another
source. Please also be aware that the units with serial numbers of
E10-0709xxxxxx have an inferior AM design, and are not possible to modify for
increased DX performance, according to the articles posted on http://www.dxer.ca.

List of Radios Used to Log 600 Ultralight Stations.........
Hi Guys:
Several people have asked what Radio(s) I used to log my 600 ULR Stations. Here`s a Run Down....... SONY SRF-59 Analog...Started with this Radio Jan. 01 2008 (Compliments of Gary Debock) SONY SRF-39 Analog Prison Radio...Obtained a month or so later....... SONY-SRF-T615 Digital.....Ordered from JAPAN at the end of Jan. 2008 ETON-E-100 Digital...Ordered from Durham Radio in April 2008 (Later Modified with Narrow Filter and Slider Coil) SANGEAN DT-400W Digital...Ordered from J&R Radio in NYC in August 2008 And Yes.......I DO have Multiples of many of these Radios!! (Gotta have backups!!) The First 300 were logged using a combination of the 3 Sony`s. The Next 300 were logged using MAINLY the SONY SRF-T615 with the Eton E-100 and Sangean used on Occasion. My Favourite Radio to use for ease of Operation and it`s DX Capabilities is the SONY SRF-T615!! It has heard some amazing stuff...and it is also the SMALLEST of the 5 Radios. If I could only keep one of the ULR`s.....it would be the SRF-T615. Next in Line would be the ETON-E-100 Slider!! But since I don`t have to chose.....I`m gonna KEEP `EM ALL!!.....because they are all great little DX Machines. The First 500 Stations were all logged BAREFOOT...using NO EXTERNAL ANTENNAS or DEVICES. The Last 100 Stations were logged using a 2.5 Foot Homebrew Tunable Box Loop, or the E-100 SLIDER COIL ANTENNA, or a PK Tunable Passive Loop which was purchased from AUSTRALIA...and is quite GOOD!! All 600 Stations were Logged from INSIDE MY HOME......The Majority of them from the BASEMENT!! Other DX Locales were.....The Bedroom (When I was Lazy) and the Dining Room Table when I wanted to Spread things out a little!! So there it is.........You don`t need 3 Acres of Land to achieve this feat.....just lots of Patience and Lots of Luck!!...and Lots of TIME!! 73...ROB. Robert S. Ross VA3SW London, Ontario CANADA |
